Timonic: Are they on break or is the stream over?
Juliamon: Between streams
Sorator13: @Timonic Magic stream is over; TTSF starting soon
princess_intell: lrrmtg is over, ian and alex are about to build a guillotine
Timonic: Oh cool I came for new magic but those two building a guillotine sounds awesome.
ShadowFirelaw: It's gonna be fun!
Juliamon: current mood: "keep wound bandaged for first 24h" and the bandage was so pathetic it didn't even hold on for 12h
Juliamon: (just a routine mole biopsy)
Juliamon: hospital bandage quality has really gone downhill in the last few years
OhaiMireiya: yike
Juliamon: it literally peeled off from the friction of getting up and sitting down a few times
OhaiMireiya: if you have the supplies you could probably patch yourself up, since I'm almost certainly in the wrong country to help
Juliamon: yeah I've rebandaged it (with assistance)
Juliamon: but like, c'mon
OhaiMireiya: =3 I hope it heals well and quickly
Juliamon: it'll be fine, we joked that it was "one last biopsy for the road" bc my derma's retiring at the end of the year
OhaiMireiya: oh
Juliamon: this is like, the 10th he's done on me
OhaiMireiya: ah fair
OhaiMireiya: I've been told I heal like wolverine
letfireraindown: Time to tinker
Juliamon: I heal, but incompletely and slowly
Manae: Definitely not fun when medical dressings decide the don't want to stick around as long as they should
OhaiMireiya: I went to get surgical tape removed and the nurse was like 'when was your surgery? last week? huh'
Juliamon: there was only one time where stitches were required, and the resulting scar still freaks people out
Juliamon: my bestie thought it was a bullet wound
OhaiMireiya: the surgical tape was super stuck on there
OhaiMireiya: oh yike!
Manae: I had a scar on my neck (much smaller now) due to butterfly sutures that didn't stick right
Juliamon: I ended up getting a tattoo on the opposite side to mirror it
Manae: Looked like I got stabbed in the neck lol
Juliamon: yeah, stretchy skin has trouble healing properly
OhaiMireiya: esp when it moves around a lot
Juliamon: and... all of me is stretchy skin

Juliamon: no, I look like the vampire that did it
Juliamon: ultrapale
princess_intell: omg saaaame
OhaiMireiya: I am also pale, which is why since moving to nz I have to wear sunscreen even in winter
princess_intell: i look like a ghost in the winter. especially since i've started to get silver hairs

Of course the *absolute* measurement doesn't matter so much as relative precision of the two sides of the joint—shaving thin layers out until they fit together as desired and the like.

TheMerricat: For those who were wondering, the question of how the shot of Conan punching the camel was done is something I wondered about a while back and looked up. It was mostly post processing. Arnold lightly tapped the camel and they added the SFX to make it sound like a meaty punch, the camel was appearently trained to do what it did.
JadedCynic: it was in BOTH movies - there's a scene where Conan enters a town, sees a camel, recognizes it as the one he drunkenly punched out in the first film, attempts to apologize to it, the camel spits ALL OVER her, and Conan just brings his fist down in the camel's head, knocking it out cold
TemporallyAwry: @DeM0nFiRe Nah, it'd be less work to simply cut the chisel in half first ;p
Lysander_salamander: I work at a fabric store, and the patterns are in imperial, so all the meaurements have to be imperial, and we get the silly eighth-inch, converted to decimals because we can't imput fractions into the various electronic devices we use
spawnofhastur: that sounds incredibly annoying
JadedCynic: and it would scan that they'd use the same technique in the second film as they did in the first :D

DeM0nFiRe: @DeM0nFiRe Oh of course
gualdhar: @Lysander_salamander well if you sell things in eighths of an inch you won't have that problem
Laogeodritt: lysander_salamander: I have a few rulers with 0.10 and 0.05 inch gradations at home and at work, because printed circuit board (PCB) design software usually takes decimal values and so many parts come with 100- or 50-mil spacing, so decimal fractional inches are *way* more common to work with than binary fractional inches

Viscount16: even with a chisel, hogging out material w/ a drill is a good first step
fastlane250: lrrWOW
JadedCynic: you'll just have to...cope without it? Kappa
spawnofhastur: mmm, pure copium
TheMerricat: @OhaiMireiya I think we came down on the side of it was never there all along.
Lysander_salamander: five-stages of grief-saw
Lysander_salamander: don't saw while angry
MrTheWalrus: The coping saw is the saw I use to remove all the things I can't cope with.
OhaiMireiya: @OhaiMireiya ah ok
spawnofhastur: my cat is very angy at me because it's raining and i haven't stopped it yet. she's seen me in the shower before so she knows i *can*, i'm just being obstinate.
DigitalSeahorse: I could use come coping
DigitalSeahorse: wooo
JadedCynic: @spawnofhastur you fickle god, you :)
spawnofhastur: nice mallet, by the way.
Laogeodritt: I usually try to do drilling fully through a piece of wood in a vise, to avoid endangering the table. =V
Laogeodritt: What kind of wood(s) are we using today, btw?
pn55: It's a learning process!
JadedCynic: we learn more from our mistakes than our successes
OhaiMireiya: it sure smells nice though
spawnofhastur: the cedar may be soft but the necks of the bourgeis are softer.
Lysander_salamander: what
Morrigan9: it's botanical
DigitalSeahorse: wat
Darleysam: yeah, it's how long it takes to grow

DigitalSeahorse: jlrrDang jlrrDang jlrrDang
asthanius: Conifers and Nonifers
pimiento: there are hardwoods and then there are hard woods
googoltudoris: does it have needles or leaves?
pimiento: important to know the difference
TheMerricat: "No, cedar is not a hardwood. This iconic wood, known throughout the world for its beauty, versatility and spicy aroma, is a softwood. It belongs to a group of plants known as “gymnosperms,” which includes most conifers, such as pine and fir trees. The common term for all gymnosperms is softwoods."
Drasvin: Softwood and hardwood are terms about the cell structure of the wood. Though hardwoods tend to be harder
JadedCynic: well, TIL
SaxPython: literally
Lysander_salamander: huh
spawnofhastur: and then there are eucalypts, which are so hard that it's often impossible to drive nails into them.
fastlane250: yeah I learned why soft drinks are called soft drinks way more recently than I'd like to admit
TheMerricat: "Yes, Cedar is a strong wood with relatively high compressive strength, bending strength, and durable than many other woods. Because of being a strong softwood, Cedar is less likely to crack and warp. Cedar has good dimensional stability that can use for furniture, flooring, and construction applications."
gnyrinn: See also: Botanical definition of a berry.
googoltudoris: it's like how a saxophone is a woodwind instrument despite being made out of brass
DigitalSeahorse: shirt is seahorse approved!
Lysander_salamander: are they called soft drinks because of the presence of soda-water?
DigitalSeahorse: xD
spawnofhastur: Which is why the fact that Australia sold California a bunch of eucalypts to be used in railways is hilarious and also tragic.
Viscount16: small holes in the corners, then large holes to hog out the material
googoltudoris: next up- the Max Powers way!
Alex_Frostfire: @googoltudoris Saxophones have a reed, right? I suppose that's what qualifies them as a woodwind?
DigitalSeahorse: "I'm groot."
ANeMzero: finally we get feet on stream
googoltudoris: @Alex_Frostfire exactly
Laogeodritt: googoltudoris: tbf the reed is still very much made of reed in most cases, on saxophone =V (though plastic reeds exist, most professionals don't find them to match the tone and control of real reed)

SkipIives: Red lacquer would be nice. You could use a semi transparent one.
Spades_Slicc: Alex has done nothing wrong ever
chaostreader: The real question is what is Lrr going to behead on this months LRL?
spawnofhastur: my dad had to go the hospital because he managed to drill into the bone in his index finger. don't be like my dad.
MAPBoardgames: @chaostreader Sounds like a question for AskLRR
DigitalSeahorse: chaostreader probably a pumpkin for Canadian thanksgiving and/or halloween
Alex_Frostfire: Laogeodritt: My sister played the flute in elementary school. I don't think that thing had any wooden parts. ;)

avi_miller: So a circumcised barrel?
saucemaster5000: I'm imagining anyone working for Cooper currently screaming at the screen
MAPBoardgames: Step 1. Make a barrel. Step 2. cut it in half.
Nenluen: at our local menards you can get half JD barrels, obstensibly to use for planting
wildpeaks: can't wind barrels and wooden crates anymore because videogames bought all of them
DigitalSeahorse: mosquitoes love rain barrels
wildpeaks: *can't find
Mischievous_Catgeist: i have an old barrel end table and 2 hibiscus in old barrels .....
Viscount16: wine barrels are good sources of project wood
Lord_Hosk: A sharp tool and a firm base will get you 80% of where you want to go with any woodworking project.
MAPBoardgames: That seems like a pretty good fit.
spawnofhastur: Tenon - t for tongue. Mortise - m for mouth.
Gobukiller: Actually, most good distilleries don't reuse their barrels. To be labeled as bourbon in the US, for instance, you legally can't reuse the barrel
Viscount16: M looks like it has a hole, T looks like it has a peg
Laogeodritt: darkmorford: Ooh, that seems like an interesting book! Personally, my purism is mostly just out of personal challenge—the techniques with power tools can give really easy precision for a lot of stuff, but there's a much higher skill ceiling do it all by hand.

JadedCynic: @fiinnnaaaaannnnnnnn you got a printer that uses metal filament?
JadedCynic: CNC milling maybe
saucemaster5000: board game kickstarters have become fascinating to watch since the shipping problems started a few years ago
CaptinOfBeez: the hardest part is dealing with all the chinese holidays that halt productions for weeks on end
Laogeodritt: spawnofhastur: Very much not—Intel, Qualcomm, GlobalFoundries still have a lot of US (and some European) fabs, and a huge amount of integrated circuits (including AMD, STMicro, I think Microchip maybe?) are made by TSMC, many of whose fabs are in Taiwan.
MAPBoardgames: At a kickstarter panel I swore an oath to never offer t-shirts as a backer reward.

Lyinginbedmon: Ugh Linus is a pet peeve of mine. Better than me at hardware, but good lord do not give him control over a budget.
spawnofhastur: It is not particularly difficult to make a working prototype firearm. It is very difficult to get one that's mass produced.
Lord_Hosk: The screwdriver that is very nice, and very overpriced because they aren't in the industry.
spawnofhastur: A lot of the upfront cost is in the tooling.
TemporallyAwry: That's not a real thing - they just stamp that on it for literally no reason.
Viscount16: @Lord_Hosk if I want an overpriced, overbuilt screwdriver, I'm getting one of the HandToolRescue ones
CptMurphey: small very precisely sized metal balls are hard to make
CaptinOfBeez: volume helps to smooth out the fixed costs of tooling and setup
CouldntPickAUsername: people really don't understand how long things take to make. this became very evident wtih video game kickstarters. Expecting them to deliver those in just a couple years. oh by the way Space Venture has a release date after 10 years
Master_Gunner: 2017 was when China first produced a complete ballpoint pen.
spawnofhastur: The Soviets learned this a lot in WWII - they developed new, better weapons but didn't adopt them because it'd take way too long for them to set up the tooling when they already have what they've got being made rapidly anyway.
DigitalSeahorse: I got a tummy ache mogPlz

Lysander_salamander: what, like smoking?
gnyrinn: @DarkMorford About 3 mm
JadedCynic: @DEATHlikescats no, "Final Note" B)
DEATHlikescats: Yassssss!
Gobukiller: I just watched an Adam Ragusea video about how tough it is to smoke cure meats at home. Lot of ways to mess up the food safety

ANeMzero: @gualdhar it was a reactor, yeah.
MrQBear: but the price of failure on that would be... costly.
DEATHlikescats: @fruan ah! Now I have that auto tuned song in my head! Good memories
Lord_Hosk: You can also make your own hippieness with nothing but the correct people around you.

double_q88: I realize he isn’t making a radioactive material… but i just tuned in. What is he doing??
spawnofhastur: It's actually reasonably easy to do nuclear fusion at home.
TemporallyAwry: Getting to see the stars of neutron decay is pretty awesome, but you can watch a recording of that :'D
spawnofhastur: You can't do net positive, but making neutrons is pretty easy.

Gobukiller: We have harnessed the power of the atom... we used it to boil water
Viscount16: well, hydroelectric just spins the turbine with gravity
Shadwhawk: Solar and wind aren't!
asddsa28: yes
JadedCynic: 10000%
Gobukiller: To be fair, water is a very efficient thermal conductor and transportation medium
kdefinition: @Shadwhawk Wind is literally just a really big kettle
Laogeodritt: Turning heat into *electrical* energy. Thermal energy is already a form of energy. ;P
dylan16807: you can use supercritical co2 instead of water sometimes
Morrigan9: some solar heats water
ContingentCat: especially when Alex is around
CptMurphey: some kinds of solar kindof are
Ryxiene: Fantastic LUL SeemsGood
Fruan: Yeah, Solar is the only way to make power that feels like people think it should.
Shadwhawk: @Shadwhawk Hah, true
Morrigan9: or rather molten salts...that heat water
Xenguin47: Turns out we haven't figured out a better way to turn things into electricity than going skinny spinny.
Lord_Hosk: Wind is arguably caused by heating the water in the atmosphere
Drasvin: It's possible to convert solar directly into electricity, but large scale solar plants just use the light to boil water to turn a turbine
SnackPak_: it's free electrons
ANeMzero: hand picked electrons
double_q88: @deathlikescats thank you! I guess now i have to ask…. Why? Or is this one of those moments where why doesn’t matter.
Chesul: I mean, technically Solar power IS harvesting power from a fusion reactor.
Xenguin47: Oh no, Paul... those solar towers frequently melt salt, not water.
spawnofhastur: Y'all saw the sand battery stuff?
TheAinMAP: PJSalt
fastlane250: Molten's Salt
niccus: in a way, petroleum, wind, and hydro power are all solar
Fruan: RTGs also don't boil water, but aren't used at scale.
LordZarano: I imagine it's EXTREMELY corrosive
ANeMzero: So not a reactor to built on a fault line next to the ocean.
TemporallyAwry: Sodium Potassium Alloy has some interesting properties :D
niccus: it can't be that much worse than ammonia refrigerants
Zephyr256k: Yeah, molten salt reactors work really well until anything goes wrong, and then they go really wrong really fast
spawnofhastur: @niccus which means they're also nuclear. As such, the only thing we used to generate power that isn't nuclear at a remove is hydopower.
JadedCynic: @Xenguin47 and best yet, the best way we've worked out to turn things is with high-pressure steam through a turbine...all the fun is in how we create the steam
Fruan: Termination Shock is real good. And the initiation action is literally 30-50 feral hogs.
the_tarabyte: arson for progress

Zephyr256k: still not as terrifying as British MAGNOX reactors though
YeetTheRich_: oh I read that paper

Lysander_salamander: aaaaa
Gobukiller: Fire is the second most important human invention right behind language
JadedCynic: our cells burn proteins...
spawnofhastur: the issue with nuclear plants is that when they fuck up they fuck up *big*.

JadedCynic: @LoadingReadyRun that's how the topic SHOULD be discussed - minus the irrational stigma

spawnofhastur: Carbon dating stopped being reliable around 1950.
DEATHlikescats: Yup!
SkylerRingtail: The whole pre-nuclear steel thing
spawnofhastur: You can't date anything after 1950 with radiocarbon dating.
DEATHlikescats: It’s in the stone now!

Ryxiene: Lol the first people scanning be like “oh no, we’re dead??”
Drasvin: Yep, we've made a fingerprint on the geologic record
JadedCynic: that's why war graves of sunken WW2 ships are being plundered - for pre-atomic steel from the shipwrecks
Gobukiller: We can also date teeth by the radiation levels in them
Viscount16: @JadedCynic yup
seanmrwick: hey all
spawnofhastur: As an anthropologist a lot of what we use now is stimulated luminescene dating coz it doesn't use radiocarboon.

seanmrwick: Alex im curious as to where you learn this information
seanmrwick: and how
ANeMzero: Lets talk about horseshoe crab blood
avi_miller: I have learned so much cool crap from Alex
spawnofhastur: Mm, delicious horseshoe crab blood.
DEATHlikescats: Cool cyan blood goodness
gualdhar: moon's haunted
Raincoast_Bear: Gundamium!
xantos69: Ian the capitalism is already on the moon. It is all around us.
ANeMzero: It is the one place not yet corrupted by capitalism: SPAAACE!
JadedCynic: done enough, it'd eff up the tides...
asddsa28: yeah moon shit is bad moon dust is radioactive as busss
Driosenth: Time Curry Voice "SPACE!"
Juliamon: The capitalism, or the asbestos-like dust
fastlane250: whalers on the moon when
SkylerRingtail: Capitalism (and the rest of us) ain't gonna survive long enough to go to the moon
TemporallyAwry: Would a functional fusion reactor have any meaningful output of helium? Or is that just sci-fi?
DEATHlikescats: Soon
Master_Gunner: Ah, here's a reference I was trying to find: The scientists at Los Alamos used a leftover 10 inch hemisphere made out of Gold as a doorstop for the room where Plutonium was stored during the Manhattan project
JadedCynic: Moon ownership? No one and EVERYONE <3
Jensling: If only there was a way to stop capitalists from doing stuff on the moon.... lucidOwO
pimiento: there's no commercial exploitation.. yet.
Drasvin: Common Heritage of Mankind. It belongs to everyone
JadedCynic: it belongs to ALL of us
Gobukiller: Lunar mining is something we should do as a species, but (like everything) capitalism shouldn't be the system that does it...
Spacecarl: Well, except for the Moonbase, of course
seanmrwick: is the dust from the moon relatively radioactive like the isotopes you mentioned?
Juliamon: Non-fungible stars
YeetTheRich_: you own the concept of a star
Fruan: That'll last right up until someone tries to actually do it.
DEATHlikescats: Star tokens
spawnofhastur: Ian you're making me think of Planetes now.
Spacecarl: Well that's why its an Orbiting underground Moonbase
Spacecarl: Property rights
Gobukiller: @seanmrwick I'm not sure about radioactivity, but we do know that moon dust is safer to breathe than Mars dust
Drasvin: Turns out water is the most valuable thing in large enough scales.
JadedCynic: @seanmrwick well, no - the earthbound nuclear tests didn't escape the atmosphere...but the SUN has irradiated the moon's surface a LOT more (what with no atmosphere)
Driosenth: and what stops an non-state actor declares that a roid is thiers
distrustingspectator: well done @LoadingReadyRun
SkylerRingtail: There's a joke here to be made about stellar NFT's and going to the moon, but I got nothing
LordZarano: Planetes is very good
Fruan: This might sound stupid, but that is WAY taller than I expected
pimiento: moon dust is super abrasive due to not having the edges worn down
ANeMzero: Moon dust is still pretty angry, even if it isn't as angry as mars dust. The lack of erosion means dust is very spiky.
YeetTheRich_: great stream lrrHEART
TemporallyAwry: I think you could still pull off a xylophone though, if you really tried Kappa
Ryxiene: Thanks for the stream! ^ v ^
seanmrwick: @gobukiller thats what I was thinking but I was also wondering how dangerous it is to breathe it

niccus: i hope we get a mini demon core next time
Juliamon: Fruan Blades take longer to reach critical velocity than you expect
OhaiMireiya: I'm not ready for it to be over
Spacecarl: it still sounds sarcastic
Gulleko: lrrSHINE bexyLURK
