Volus_dude: whre we can sign to become Chultist?
beowuuf: i remember someone had a challenge of writing 100 word stories. It was an interesting exercise to duplicate, because it just made you feel when you were butting heads with not enough info/flavour with that limitation, but more often than not, you realised how much you can strip away and still retain a flavour or feel.
Pinwiz11: And then there are Dwarf Fortress items... :)

CAKHost: I'm reminded about a... module? Some expansion booklet for 3rd edition DnD that has info for a caber. Which is basically just a weaponized log. Volus_dude: 90's text message lingo was a challenge.
CAKHost: Uhhhhh

TXC2: roastbeefsandwitch he said 40K
TehAmelie: secondary education? in 40K? never thought of that
RockPusher: some form of technical school perhaps?
TXC2: TehAmelie think of it in the same way people got taught in the middle ages
roastbeefsandwitch: Starfinder might work better as a shell here, but sure.

RockPusher: Are you saying End of Evangelion isn't a comedy‽ lrrBEEJ

TXC2: "once upon a time there where these people called the Necrontyr..."
Brozard: "What's the deal with all this LCL?"
TehAmelie: it has its comedy moments. generally the whole vibe of Anno taking all the highest wishes of the fans and making the entire monkey's paw curl up, with a dry sound of crackling bones. . .
Brozard: Swiss Army Man, but Daniel Radcliffe is playing Kaji
RockPusher: "Wait, what? Why are the military trying to kill us‽" fugiWow
roastbeefsandwitch: Suggestion: Not Goblins, but Goblinoids. It opens up more race options, at the least, and allows for different cultural peronalities they hold.
TehAmelie: Order of the Stick has some opinions about the goblins' place in the world, i recall
TXC2: a goblin phalanx
RockPusher: Ablative armour for the organisation
Angnor33: It's hard to properly stack your goblins...
Brozard: Totally unsponsored, but Keith Ammann's "The Monsters Know What They're Doing" is pretty great
roastbeefsandwitch: Hobgoblins would stack up well. They're L/E, I think?
beowuuf: my own headcanon for goblins is that goblins are so low on the food chain, their default status is personal survival at all cost. Any sort of morality is apex predator privilege. Hence the cowardice, etc. But I always want to have a moment that shows if they can gain enough mass of goblins, a mental switch flips and they actually start being 'protect the home' selfless.
TehAmelie: and is the thing they are up to a real effort to change/save the world?
BlueMechanic: it all comes tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down
TemporallyAwry: @beowuuf LuvCool ooh, that's good.
TehAmelie: okay we'll all rewatch Eva together later, but we can drop it now
Brozard: I was going to mention Minas Tirith
Volus_dude: what middle earth would have been, if pippin had suggestest sauron to make 2nd "one ring"?
RockPusher: I'm imagining trying to protect the person who pays you, failing and then deciding to rob the place
TemporallyAwry: If you get too many goblin's all into a single warren, eventually an artificer pops up, and then either something "amazing" happens, or something "explosive" happens PrideShrug
roastbeefsandwitch: Consider the "everyone fights" idea: If huge numbers of them die in each fight, then trying to maintain a functional society of professions would be difficult
xantos69: Hey team! What are we working on today?
TehAmelie: words
TXC2: hello xantos69 we're working on D&D box text
Riiiiiiis: aww, Cams mic is very rough :-/
TehAmelie: now you mention it, there's some peaking
beowuuf: can hear you fine
TheMerricat: your audio is awesome and so are you Cameron!
Brozard: I always presumed LRR folks kept audio levels lower as not to blow out peoples ears
TXC2: what if the Goblins have been hired?
TXC2: Kelly's Heroes, but goblins
BalthusHomewood: playing as cavern guards would be interesting too. you could be the monsters that would normally be tasked with protecting a dungeon, and you'd be fighting player class characters
beowuuf: it is interesting
TheMerricat: because there's bigger things behind them that if they run into will eat them
aiamethyst: I like to give characters personal motivations for being there, like revenge or rescue, or they have something to protect
TXC2: goblins have honour?
xantos69: I try to give my characters a "personal" motivation. Money isn't usually a good one because money can be made lots of ways. Something about this cave has to matter to them.
SpacePotato01: It could easily become depressing, if the overarcing theme is hopelessness.
Seagulyus: goblins are angry at humans for killing their race
roastbeefsandwitch: There's the competitive streak: those adventurer's won't kill me!
RockPusher: The buddy comedy where our antiheroes find themselves in entirely over their heads and revert to self-preservation
Brozard: Cultural expectation?
Seagulyus: so many wonderful things you can do with it
Violentfrog: i'm trying a solo rpg right now called Artefact for the first time (journalling about being a magical item in an RPG setting)
jet_almighty: Goblin fear responseis more fight than flight
BalthusHomewood: defending their home?
xantos69: A missing friend who went into the cave can often work.
roastbeefsandwitch: So just as they could all be super cowardly, they could also be super competitive.
Brozard: or defending your claim
evelyndisaster: goblins are a magical abomination created by evil wizards
tabbyphobos: maybe they ARE running away from something, but the adventurers are in the way
Riiiiiiis: Their weird collection of strange items keep them defending it at all costs
TXC2: they torture for fun
a2omega: goblins, are they just 40k orks?
TheMerricat: if you're playing goblins from my head space it's partially the goblins are too dumb to realize they're in trouble and partially the goblins are too afraid of whomever hired them to run. but they'd also be just canny enough to think they could get away with running or stealing if the things that are in front of them are strong enough to make them think they can take out whomever hired them
beowuuf: goblins actually have a very strong family streak for their personal family. Other goblins are trash, but their parents will be defended with their lives. So they will betray each other in battle happily but will fight to the death individually or trick the adventurers always in order to stop adventurers getting to someone they care about
HorusFive: Maybe they CANT leave. There's a magic macguffin that keeps spawning goblins, but they can't leave the cave (within a mile or something). Can't let the adventurers take it, who knows if the reincarnation will continue.
Gamshyd: but also... your buddy totally let you die, just for the chance to chop off your toe to hurt you, and to maybe let you die compeltely
BalthusHomewood: even chaotic evil beings would know that teaming up would give you a better chance at bringing down more dangerous opponents
Lysander_salamander: same here
Lysander_salamander: Long brainstorms with lots of lore formed. Then I open up the word processor and write "there were some guys..."
LordZarano: Maybe they just don't fear death?
jet_almighty: I'm reminded of Fin from Star Wars. Warrior turned self-survival instinct.
Lysander_salamander: maybe they don't have a rigid heirarchy, but maybe they have a collection of personal connections and mutuals
Riiiiiiis: maybe death is the 4th stage in the goblins cycle
Brozard: What if they're defending a cloning vat?
Brozard: All 100 goblins are in fact *the same goblin*
TXC2: what if magic keeps bringing the goblins to life?
whitefirecomix: Maybe you think you're already in the afterlife, and death is just waking up again
roastbeefsandwitch: A goblin pez machine for souls, dropped into new goblins
Brozard: a gez dispenser
beowuuf: what's the rpg where you play multiple goblins in a meatgrinder game?
Lysander_salamander: I remember Terry Pratchett's Mac Feegles, who believe the living world is their heaven, and when they die they return to their physical world until they return on their death over there.
whitefirecomix: I mean PC's already don't fear death so it's easy
BalthusHomewood: it's a good GM exercise. always ask yourself why your monsters are where they are. why do goblins live in caves? goblins live in caves, because there are bigger and scarier monsters that live outside. (for example)
LordZarano: @beowuuf lemmings?
Riiiiiiis: How about Goblins actually need to gather a certain set of things / experiences in their lifespan to "be a good goblin"
BalthusHomewood: The immortal question: where do they poop?
beowuuf: "goblins die easily.... but a goblin's rage is forever, and it has to go somewhere..."
beowuuf: @LordZarano a lemmings rpg would be fun :D
Lysander_salamander: perhaps a collection of families, like a wolf or hyena pack
whitefirecomix: At some point you have enough goblins together that eventually one of them has to be an artist and at that point you can have a logo and develop branding
ArisuGunplaSFW: i got it. goblins think they are actually on the top of the food chain and adventurers are sent and mercenaries by rival "bone clubs" and "leather caps" factions
ArisuGunplaSFW: *as mercenaries
Lysander_salamander: :D
Lysander_salamander: Chew the scenery
Manae: I have had the thought that a good reason for the "evil goblin" thing could be a society that just doesn't have much of a concept of individual ownership outside of what you can carry on your person. Of course a goblin thinks nothing of stealing--to them it's not even a concept they inherently understand
HorusFive: Why Bret Spinner always seemed like he was enjoying playing Lore so much
TehAmelie: it always takes an extra step of effort for me to remember when an actor plays an evil twin version or body swapped version of themselves it is the same actor playing the part
BalthusHomewood: simmering wrath
Lysander_salamander: oh goodness where? ;)
TXC2: or be Nana Visitor and just be DRAPED over everything :p
Lysander_salamander: screw you, rick berman
jet_almighty: Seems like you're trying to write up for Grim Wanderer in the MtG D&D set.
HorusFive: Are the young and breeding stock kept safe somewhere else?
Lysander_salamander: It could be like Paranoia, where their boss is some weird unknown powerful being, but is incomprehensible
Riiiiiiis: Ahh everything is an American analogy...
HorusFive: It was just out in a field...
xantos69: The cow was free. We just had to go get it.
TehAmelie: if dragons are humans who get changed by hoarding wealth, maybe goblins are humans in debt
HorusFive: There was a guy next to the cow yelling about something, so we hit him with a club. But still, free cow
Gamshyd: feels like the pc group could be a home owner's association
xantos69: So just extreme entitlement with no self reflection.
Lysander_salamander: ah, the British Royal Museum

TehAmelie: a gang of murder hobos have broken into our house (?)
TacitusVigil: Is this just Maslow's hierarchy of needs?
beowuuf: I mean should the mystery of why the goblins are now standing up to the adventurers be the hook for the game? The player goblins don't know, but all the high up goblins seem to have a purpose and the players are trying to fit in and figure it out?
noSmokeFire: unless you're doing Goblin Paranoia, which is a very specific thing
beowuuf: jacoib turned dale's one in to a co-op quite well :D
TehAmelie: after reading all of Squirrel Girl lastw eek, i expect the lateral solution here will be making friends with the goblins. or would there be something stopping that?
whitefirecomix: I only just joined - are the players the goblins in this exercise?
HorusFive: They are @whitefirecomix
whitefirecomix: @HorusFive thanks :)
TehAmelie: hmm maybe making friends with the invaders would be real hard for the goblins
TacitusVigil: On their way to Advanturecon (TM)
HorusFive: What the goblins really need to do is figure out why the tavern owner in town keeps sending low level adventurers up into their home
whitefirecomix: Instinctively my first thought was: do the adventurers even speak goblin?
noSmokeFire: did the magic portal come with the ancient ruins, or did the goblins make it?
Lysander_salamander: what if the setup is the goblins have been taken over by a boss monster, and the goblins are doing malicious compliance? Like, unionizing and hoping their incompetance will help get rid of the tyrant?
BrowneePoints: Perhaps a Goblin archaeological team has recently found some key to restoring their former glory
TehAmelie: goblins only like 20-30 years or so right? it could be some cultural identity thing going back hundreds of generations and it would make sense no one rememebrs what it's for
LordZarano: Why do dogs bark at mailpeople?
whitefirecomix: Goblins are often 'ruled' and used as minions. This could be the first time their society has held something that could be considered theirs on their own. That is a powerful motivator for resistance.
noSmokeFire: oooo. goblin archeologists! for goblin university?
Brozard: The party are all grad students?
Brozard: No! My research project!
Riiiiiiis: Ohhh yeah, they are searching for some old goblin lair, maybe the first
SpacePotato01: I like the idea of a goblin sacrificial distraction team - given minor trinkets and some money and used as sacrificial XP pinatas while the rest of the goblins escape or secure the mcGuffin.
whitefirecomix: Goblin university is a powerful setup
beowuuf: shouldn't the players be the archeologists then? to start with npc goblins defend the work, but then the players have to defend it themselves. Given the players will have some of the items and uncovered stuff, they will have more ownership of that as motivation to fight?
noSmokeFire: archeologists plays into some of the overlooked parts of any "ancient ruins" setting -- who the heck were all these ancient civilizations?? did they blow themselves up?? are we their descendants? migrants from the next surviving continent?
Brozard: I just got these specimens cataloged, and some adventurers come in and start setting off all the traps jlrrFacepalm
Riiiiiiis: it's goblins all the way down
noSmokeFire: oooo. Goblin Archeologists from a Planescape type setting
whitefirecomix: I mean this could be a goblin community enrichment group. Like they WANT a university and are trying to get a research grant
emberBecky: maybe at the current time they've been rebuilding/repopulating during the years/decades since they defeated the dwarves
noSmokeFire: "survival" and "academics" makes me think of adventurers basically being Predator. some kind of alien, dangerous *thing* with unclear motives
whitefirecomix: Adventurer: Isolation
HorusFive: I'm put in mind of "Giant in the Playground" series. The goblins are pursuing a plan to elevate the goblin-god to higher status in the pantheon
HorusFive: Order of the Stick- that's it
BrowneePoints: yep
beowuuf: 5e broguht it back and it's convoluted :p
whitefirecomix: Maybe they're just trying to create a decent goblin god, like one who isn't the worst
BrowneePoints: they even have good CR calculators
Brozard: I've read that vocalizing those are actually helpful to cognitive processes
BrowneePoints: Ooo that could be a good one, the archaeological find is proof of existence of a Forgotten Good-Aligned Goblinoid Deity either fallen or sealed in ages long past
noSmokeFire: there are a couple of Forged in the Dark games that might be interesting to reference for mechanics. Band of Blades has the players as officers in an army managing fungible recruits, and Wicked Ones makes you boss monsters in a dungeon. I don't think either fully represents what this campaign is about, but they might be mineable
TehAmelie: you should try a language with multiple different definite noun articles. 50% of the time i start a sentence with the wrong modifiers for the word i then figure out i have to use
TehAmelie: swedish, for me
emberBecky: I say "I think" or "as far as I know" very frequently when talking about information I'm certain about. =P
BrowneePoints: I walked into the room as Archibald slams the phone down with great force
BrowneePoints: boom right there says a lot by saying nothing
LurkerSpine: anyone getting a buzzing noise or is that my headphones dying?

eshplode: @emberBecky I hate that one. I tend to add those to any second hand information even if it's from a trustworthy source
Lysander_salamander: I couldn't hear any music
RealGamerCow: the buzzing is not the music
whitefirecomix: Goblin Quest by Jim C Hines was all about a forgotten god finding a single goblin to believe in him as the goblin is adopted by murderous adventurers

GhostValv: swarm druid goblins :O
Brozard: @BrowneePoints They're protecting a meadery!
xantos69: The thing is my taste in music is extremely narrow in that category. I expect flawless Notes...not sounds.
TehAmelie: did you know Douglas Coupland wrote a sequel to Generation X called Generation A? it deals with all the bees disappearing
BrowneePoints: Goblins with specialized bred Bees for gardening
LordZarano: When Google was doing automatic phonecalls to businesses they discovered that in order to sound natural they had to make the ai say um to cover for the times when the ai was thinking of what to say

TacitusVigil: AR-558
xantos69: anybody got a link to that speech?
TacitusVigil: Pfft, the Dominion would have just annexed Ferenginar with the Jem Hadar
BrowneePoints: Nog's monologue to Sisko about wanting to join Starfleet cuz he's sick of cultural standards still hits me HARD
JadedCynic: recklessness?

BrowneePoints: rules that ONLY apply to inter-goblinoid relationships, non Goblins don't apply
SpacePotato01: the lower you are on the CR list, the likelier you are to be included in a D&D game, since games tend to start at low level. So being low CR is an excellent evolutionary trait.
RealGamerCow: "Goblins stick around by reproducing a lot" "No, you just think we all look alike"
whitefirecomix: That makes me want to consider the party as family. "You're all goblins and you're all related" is a strong start for a character pitch
noSmokeFire: do we pull out some fairy stuff here? that's sometimes a fun way to do goblin logic
Mollylele: TIL an apple tv can play music & twitch at the same time. thanks bees
TehAmelie: i still have to watch The Terror. would you have something quick and easy to say to encourage this course of action?
GhostValv: oh no... that speaks to a certain set of anxieties I didn't know how to articulate.
RockPusher: When you take your core values out of the box and they turn out to be moist and slimey…
HorusFive: This is their home after all. They have all kinds of time to set up traps

emberBecky: defend your home AND kick some ass
BrowneePoints: I want MY AMV moment!
HorusFive: But what if Free Cow? lrrCOW
whitefirecomix: Goblin Anarchist Society has had enough of you and your adventuring
HorusFive: In shackles chained to a wheel?
RealGamerCow: Inglourious Basterds, but Goblins, and written well
RealGamerCow: Says you
noSmokeFire: the cow looked so sad, tied up at the market. they're liberators
HorusFive: You say stolen. I say I'm feed ing my family
HorusFive: Jean Val Goblin
TehAmelie: "molon labe" is still the motto of Greece's special forces, you know. maybe that'd be the motto of the whole goblin nation
BrowneePoints: Ah Battle of Blackwater?
SpacePotato01: Those are some brave men out there. Let's go kill them
TacitusVigil: Did it work?
BrowneePoints: Battle of Blackwater was good
BrowneePoints: good writing, good dialogue, just good
TheMandrew: the battle of blackwater in the show was great. because martin wrote that part
TacitusVigil: Nobility is something we often find after the fact to justify what we did.
noSmokeFire: what if it's not a brave speech, what if it's a GOBLIN speech? chew the scenery, make some noise
beowuuf: oh go, that speech to the team...
TacitusVigil: I couldn't tell if he was just a bad speech giver or everyone realized it was BS. Or both.
TacitusVigil: Listen Cameron, how dare you, Syril is just a very proud boy, you know? Kappa
whitefirecomix: preaching at nonbelievers
JadedCynic: sometimes 'inspiration' can transcend mere language
TehAmelie: what is time anyway?
beowuuf: seems like a writing session
whitefirecomix: I am enjoying this greatly and would love more of these writing streams
noSmokeFire: what if it was Da Bois
TemporallyAwry: It's cause their all Fun-Guys ;p
BrowneePoints: They're...fun gis benginFingers
BrowneePoints: but I would love to see a revisiting of this
JadedCynic: NICE @BrowneePoints SeemsGood
BrowneePoints: it's making me think of a past Goblin Civilization that wielded intense elemental magics
SoldieroFortune: Oh hoh!
beowuuf: thanks for the discussions cori and cameron!
TehAmelie: hangin out and sporulatin with my spore buds
xantos69: Cheer50 Bits!
CAKHost: Blobfish your legs. Blobfish your fluids.
TehAmelie: wait, orks should totally use "buds" to describe a writhing mass of buddies
beowuuf: escher3BEE
ArdCollider: ilu Cori
BrowneePoints: DORKTORK!? YAS
beowuuf: (tm)
TehAmelie: fungus may not actually bud, as far as i remember, but modern day viewers won't care
goombalax: Left 40000 Dead
noSmokeFire: Left 4 Vermintide 3
TemporallyAwry: It's like procedural generated DOOM Kappa

LordZarano: escher3BEE_SG escher3BEE_SG
beowuuf: \o/
TehAmelie: one hour to go. guess that gives me just enough time for an episode of The Terror
CAKHost: See you all later!
TehAmelie: don't bang your bees
RassilonDND: 🐝!
CAKHost: I was safely keeping them in the air out of collision range of things. C:
TehAmelie: goob job
CAKHost: :D
RassilonDND: I've always wondered why you see swarms of bees but never swarms of bumblebees
TehAmelie: there are a surprising number of bee species that aren't communal
TimIAm: !next
LRRbot: Next scheduled stream: Crossing the Streams (The LoadingReadyRun crew join hands (sometimes from the comfort of their homes) to play some video games! Game: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide) at Mon 05:00 PM PST (2:03 from now).
