saucemaster5000: Remake the oracle games please and thank you...
DeM0nFiRe: I finally beat BotW a month before TotK came out and I was a little concerned that it wouldn't be "new" enough that soon, but there's just so much new stuff in TotK that it ended up not being a concern
Pinwiz11: I've had BotW forever but never played it, may be hooking the Switch up this weekend to start
zeathean: it has weapon durability is a 9/10 at best
Xed_Regulus: I would love to play BotW, but the weapon durability has just turned me right now.
SocraticMethod: Was it Famitsu that's basically captured by the industry?
gnyrinn: I like that Beej specified "the Michelin Star Man". Do not take dining advice straight from Bibendum.
matthaus_c: Bibendum looks like a man who eats well
SocraticMethod: I remember there was some kind of kerfluffle about Ghost of Tsushima and a big japanese magazine
Gekyouryuu: That's how they did reviews in Interspecies Reviewers (nsfw anime, don't look it up right away)
SquareDotCube: (Reminder that Bidendum eats nails. "Regularly." As a PR stunt.)
SocraticMethod: And Skyrim
LordManiMani: Getting the deep lore on Michelin man here
KeytarCat: @SocraticMethod And Skyrim! And Skyrim...And Skyrim? And Skyrim??
Earthenone: reviwers love their zeldas
DeM0nFiRe: Skyward Sword was definitely mixed yeah
SquareDotCube: the music session minigame is awful.
LordManiMani: Zelda Games are the opposite of Sonic games. Everybody falls over themselves when it comes out, then ages later we all go 'hey wait a minute'. Which I say as a Zelda fan
DeM0nFiRe: Also I am not sure by what criteria you would give OoT a 10/10 but not Majora's Mask. Like obviously someone might prefer OoT over MM, but by what review critera was MM flawed and OoT wasn't?
SocraticMethod: @DeM0nFiRe "I vibe with this thing more"
SquareDotCube: Seasons is more about combat, so it might gel with you better Heather.
LordManiMani: @dem0nfire people disliking the time limit mechanic probably
kusinohki: some MM players never figured out how to slow time and struggled to finish dungeons before the 3 day reset ??
StarlitGhost: Skyward Sword is the only Zelda game I started that I didn't finish
SquareDotCube: Ages was more about puzzles. and dungeons 5 and 6 does tend to be a bastard about that
TheMerricat: You know the best way to get a reputation for being a 'hard' reviewer? Be ever so slightly inconsistent and biased so that you can always come up with a reason to knock off a point and a reason to ignore issues.
EvilBadman: I'm over on scores for games. I don't need a numerical value, just say what you enjoyed or didn't or like Beej said, felt.
TheMerricat: Beej is 'normal' volumed for me, though he's quiet for Beej....
DeM0nFiRe: Yeah, even adjusting for time when they came out, ToTK is clearly a better game than BotW
Earthenone: i failed a dexterity challange for 2 hours in skyward sword, i knew the button to press for the puzzle but i couldent get the wii to aknowlage that i was pressing it some sort of timed boomerang switch
SocraticMethod: @rubikdarkwill Beej is projecting less than others, I think
Earthenone: so i droped that game
LordManiMani: And BOY HOWDY did they not fix that
saucemaster5000: I'm almost annoyed how much tears of the kingdom improves on stuff from breath of the wild
saucemaster5000: for me, I don't want a reviewer I agree with -- I want a reviewer who I can understand their point and judge if it might be for me.
kusinohki: or find a reviewer has complete opposite tastes - "they hated this game, maybe I should check it out"
TemporallyAwry: "Finding Treasure feels pointless when it's trash in 3 minutes" effect.
rubikdarkwill: @rubikdarkwill I'm comparing the angle of Beej's mic to Heather's and it looks less rotated to me
TheMerricat: I really don't do reviewers any more, I do streamers. If they play the game and I like what I see, I buy it.
Earthenone:
i was very confused watching the beej stream of the start of the game, the first hour or so was pretty much what i pictured breath of the wild to be, collecting food, cooking and gathering weapons then i came back an hour later and i think beej was playing kerbal space program?
SquareDotCube: I get the issue of being annoyed of having a weapon break mid-battle. And moreso if a weapon being thrown breaking on impact (and you missed)
DeM0nFiRe: lol I do the exact same thing as Heather
SocraticMethod: Paul like Dad Games and Boat Games genres, you heard it first her
EvilBadman: For me, fuse is a game changer cause you can just make new beatsticks immediately and get to make really dumb things that still slap
SquareDotCube: make your spear into a longer spear!
LordManiMani: @temporallyawry this time it feels worse than botw. At least before, a Royal Halberd felt special. Now it's sour grapes because of the in universe reasons
DeM0nFiRe: @EvilBadman Yeah as someone who doesn't really like the durability mechanic, having an easy way to always get a weapon that isn't just a stick definitely helps
SocraticMethod: Make your daughter into a dog!
KeytarCat: @SquareDotCube Longinus Spear?
TheMerricat: Don't play games that don't let me look around. You made an environment, let me enjoy it.
AtomicAlchemical: IMO a good review is a good essayist. Really dig into the meat of the game and tell me about how the themes resonate or don't and how the gameplay feels to use and why
SymphonicLolita: also had that issue with pikmin tbh
LordManiMani: @symphoniclolita good point... for some reason the first two felt different than MM's time constraining. More like an optimization puzzle
saucemaster5000: I try not to play games with more than one pixel. Sensory overload
SquareDotCube: also not having a certain ability from BotW not present does sorta hamstring my go-to tactic with fighting
cleopatra_wasnt__black: Anyone into history here
EvilBadman: What I am most interested in is what concessions BOTW had due to being split for wiiu that they got to realize now in TOTK
SquareDotCube: The patch where they enabled OC for loading times was fantastic, but it seems like they didn't quite do OC for the load times in the overworld this time
SocraticMethod: Interesting. Texture streaming bottleneck?
Niahlah: Fuse power is amazing
Nydestroyer: reminds me of how the steamdeck sucked at loading some games till I increased the swappyness and swap ram
LordManiMani: @squaredotcube hmm? TotK?
SquareDotCube: @LordManiMani yeah, loading takes about a minute, playing on an older Switch version
Barb4rian: I'm cursed with noticing all frame drops =(
LordManiMani: @squaredotcube but they patched in overclocking? Like Ninty? Or modders
SocraticMethod: Uneven frames are worse than consistent lower frames, up to a point)
SquareDotCube: @LordManiMani They did, for loading times in Sheikah shrines in BotW. No patch has launched for TotK yet AFAIK
Lusunati: I vaguely remember seeing that
Lusunati: Elden Ring on ps4 is masterful port that does stuff like that
Lusunati: it will drop frames from animations of enemies you are not targeting
Lusunati: and when it drops frames it'll find keyframes and they'll animate on less frames
Laserbeaks_Fury: Bloodborne is another game locked at 30 fps and I always feel it when I go back
EvilBadman: Bloodborne is max 30, if you're lucky, not locked
KeytarCat: @Lusunati I played a mobile diablo clone that did that for all enemies. Because mobile gaming
SocraticMethod: SMTV and new Kirby drop animation frames noticeably. SMT is worse because it tends to prioritize large vistas and jerky demons jump out.
Invitare: The Monolith Difference
Nydestroyer: I think in a few years I will probably go on a binge of the zelda games, have a switch but have yet to start playing any of them
Laserbeaks_Fury: I fell of Zelda after Twilight Princess
SocraticMethod: It's a 10 of "I can fix them"
LordManiMani: An ill-thought-through buggy mess. Most magical time I've had playing pokemon. --back of box quote
SquareDotCube: Yeah, transparency layers can thrash RAM like it's nothing. It's something VFX engineers have had to deal with since the mid-2000s
Lusunati: When are they done in good faith eh
Lusunati: not often
Barb4rian: DLSS?
Bugberry: I remember a lot of rough discussions around Last Guardian and I ended up loving that game.
SocraticMethod: DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling)
Lusunati: One of the NFS games did that
Lusunati: (DS had an issue... vanilla? where durability is calculated using frames spent actively swingin'. So 60 fps meant 2x breakage speed)
Laserbeaks_Fury: Thats why I loved Wind Waker so much
Bugberry: I wonder if sensitivity to frame rate is tied to motion sickness. I don't get effected by either.
DeM0nFiRe: First person games give me a headache at lower than about 50 frames per second (and lower than about 85 fov lol)
SocraticMethod: I usually notice fram drops when I turn camera in FPS. It feels more sluggish.
KeytarCat: I play retro games because I can't justify buying modern stuff. I'm incredibly forgiving of frame rate type stuff
Loonatic93: Sort of how movies can look like they have Soap Opera lighting.
SquareDotCube: smoothing is great, if it were consistent. It's not.
Laserbeaks_Fury: weird, the "game mode" on my monitor turns off all those after effects
Laserbeaks_Fury: Be cause those ffects increase input lag
Lusunati: Games are pretty awesome. I don't think you'll always notice
LordZarano: Yeah generally the whole point of "game mode" on TVs is to turn off all those filters to reduce processing lag
Nydestroyer: reminds me of when I tried to go back to the original assassins creed after playing a more modern one
SocraticMethod: Overwatch 2 is a PC game, yes
Nydestroyer: it was terrible
TheMerricat: So many people pissed off online about this one. SOOOO many.
SocraticMethod: @Nydestroyer Did you collect all the feathers?
EvilBadman: Speaking of devs needing to compromise
Laserbeaks_Fury: So here's my question: Were they already pre-selling the "solo story" game?
Spacecarl: I wonder if we will ever get a full story of the behind the scenes there.
TemporallyAwry:
A potentially legally actionable deviation from the promised end user experience
Nydestroyer: @SocraticMethod When I originally played it when I first got a 360 in early highschool yes, revisting it heck no

TheMerricat:
https://twitter.com/ingoodjesst/status/1658585843433635841 - "as jared mentioned in today's dev chat, even devs have felt disappointment that the original vision of OW2 in 2019 is not the same path we're able to follow rn. even so, we're still working hard to deliver a memorable PvE story + exciting content for PvP in S6 and beyond because"
SocraticMethod: @Nydestroyer AC1 was the game that broke my completitionist streak. Those goddamn collectables.
Laserbeaks_Fury: Wasn't "Titan" the shooter RPG they wanted to do with OW2?
LordManiMani: @cptmurphey like patching in weird minigames so your mobile ads aren't illegal!
SocraticMethod: @Laserbeaks_Fury Sort of. TItan wasn't up to quality standards so it was cancelled. Later the OW team mined it for good concepts and features
Laserbeaks_Fury: But then they went back and tried to do it again
Juliamon: This would not have nearly as much backlash if they hadn't burned all their goodwill already
TheMerricat: More importantly we all assumed you were WORKING on it. Telling us this three years later that "oh wow that'd be so hard to do".....
CptMurphey: you've now told me that you have no idea how to design a game
SocraticMethod: We do expect better from you than kickstarter stretch goal problems, yes.
RockPusher:

Loonatic93: Don't kick cats.
saucemaster5000: Yeah, Blizzard's goodwill is really in the toilet these days
EvilBadman: Lucy keeps pulling the cat away last minute
laundreydhull: Why would you phrase "Cat-Kicking"?
LordManiMani: @socraticmethod well put
SocraticMethod: @laundreydhull misspoke can-kicking, I think
Nydestroyer: They clearly did some type of planning, since they decided to make a new game to allow them to make it
gnyrinn: Wait. up to 50 talents per hero and up to 35 heroes is not 1000s of talents, it's up to 1750 talents. Maybe that doesn't matter, but it matters to me.
LordManiMani: Vindication!
RockPusher:
We've fallen into a regional idiom hole
TheMerricat: "He might not have been elected to office this term, but he'll likely look for another kick at the cat in November. A: "Do you want to try driving my car, to see how you like it?" B: "Yeah, sure, I'll have a kick at the cat." Please, just give me a kick at the cat. I know I could score if I got more playing time."
SymphonicLolita: I have also heard that before
Nydestroyer: he lives in a shadow canada
SquareDotCube: how long until we get "kick in the bee's dick"
laundreydhull: Beej, BEEJ, B e e j! Do you think they're allegedly waiting the Long Con where Microsoft fully acquires Activision/Blizzard or something?
TemporallyAwry:
Beej is acting a little sus
RockPusher:
Beej is possessed by a ghost from more easterly climes?
Lusunati: @SocraticMethod You know i've not seen Molyneux recently... has he overpromised recently?
Juliamon: It's weird, but very descriptive
matthaus_c: a kick at the shit hemorrhage
Loonatic93: You Canadians and your silly regional idioms! Uff Da!
Nydestroyer: Nope, hoodie
laundreydhull: Can I call it that!?
TheMerricat: "According to the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms, the expression is "Canadian informal" and bears the meaning of "An opportunity to achieve something." The supposition of its having a Canadian origin is seemingly confirmed by a locus of printed references (the earliest from 1953) that almost entirely come from Canada or north central U.S. states (Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota)."
SymphonicLolita: yes I do thatnk you very much

SquareDotCube: 3 talents for the character, 10 for the animations, and 40 for the skins

matthaus_c: a refund on your emotional investment

EvilBadman: @squaredotcube and 2 doesn't?
Lord_Hosk: Yeah, I was thinking like LOL where you can buy all the items, and do a skill tree. but everyone is the same you just set up each character differently, they dont have a individual tree.
SocraticMethod: And none of the HotS talents were .05% more damage or 1% more fire resist, so there was a base for it
TemporallyAwry: They tip their ubers well? I've heard that.
SocraticMethod: *base for creating meaningful talent pool in OW2
Spacecarl: Weirdly, they have been doing well with wow at the moment. I think only one of their games is allowed to go well at a time
Loonatic93: "Let me be frank about Frank."
EvilBadman: For whatever it is worth, from a game perspective Diablo 4 looks better than most stuff Blizzard’s been putting out

EvilBadman: Far Cry 6 flopped

Mai_Andra: I'm just tired of every Assassins' Creed having a season pass, dragging the game release across a year or three.
Mai_Andra: I never really (ever) go back to a game after I've finished it, so I tend to want all of a game to be released before starting it.
Lusunati: and that's what people buy in droves
EvilBadman: I Don have a problem with that cause it allows the team to explore a world or work without having to do a lot of additional foot work
EvilBadman: Don't
SquareDotCube: mid-2000s Ubisoft was great.
JohnLockeCole: I was like that with Squaresoft back in the day
SquareDotCube: PoP: Sands of Time, Beyond Good and Evil...

Mai_Andra: I do appreciate the chance to explore other plotlines or gameplay areas in DLC. Assassin's Creed has largely been pretty good with that.
saucemaster5000: NineCent tho...
They_Are_Alyx: They fought off an acquisition by Vivendi and are now trying to sell themselves
Loonatic93: Don't be Scrappy. He was obnoxious!
Earthenone: ohh dairy queen/
TemporallyAwry:
Blizzard?
TheAinMAP: The ice cream kind?
Lusunati: "I have faith in the three Bs: Bethesda, Blizzard and Bioware" - someone who's probably regretting that sentence
Earthenone: lmao
Mai_Andra: functional?
TemporallyAwry: "Not on Fire" ... this time.
Barb4rian: Server Slam went very well for them.
Lusunati: Famous Last Words
TheThirdTail: why would you say that?
drcthulu: That's a jinx
Barb4rian: We'll see if that's true
They_Are_Alyx: (X) Doubt
SymphonicLolita: (x) doubt
Invitare: Narrator: "It did"
RockPusher: Bold move
saucemaster5000: Just stop saying "we are very confident" because it does not mean what you thin it means
EvilBadman: Be confident INTERNALLY you doofuses.
DoodlestheGreat: Look, after what Blizzard did this week to Overwatch, kinda hard for anyone to take their word for it.
Astramentha: ^this
drcthulu: Also doing a server slam on the weekend that a new zelda came out might not have been a real test of it
Barb4rian: Would be a first in my mind.
Bugberry: You can even express confidence, just not about something so likely to fail.
Manae: Beta 1 was real bad. Server slam seemed really stable
TemporallyAwry:
That AC + Doom story is STILL one of the good ones
mowdownjoe: Beej, Google tried that, and it failed.
rubikdarkwill: Fondly remembers the FF14 Endwalker login queues
Celephai: Do not forget, it was the Tears of the Kingdom release on the same days and also Mothers Day.
EvilBadman: I think the game pie is big enough it did not effect it mucb
Spacecarl: Well they would have the numbers of people who did it and have an idea then
fiftymcnasty: Well it already has a launch date of June 6
Earthenone: !pubg
LRRbot: Playerunknown's Project Runway
Metric_Furlong: the colon battlegrounds
mowdownjoe: !pubg
LRRbot: Player Unsung's Botterdammerung
EvilBadman: It's cloaca not colon, geeze
TemporallyAwry: #Necromacy is not recommended.
mowdownjoe: So... Just copying Apex Legends.
RockPusher: Necromancy!
EvilBadman: @mowdownjoe Or fortnite or most other BRs now
Raiz0k: Ah, Totem of the Undying.
Earthenone:
i imagine the owner of the blue chip has already moved on to the next game by the end of this process
fiftymcnasty: Yeah CoD might have been the first one I remember doing it
LordZarano: So now PUBG is the one copying from Fortnite
Raiz0k: @LordZarano Only took... how many years?
SquareDotCube: and not something that very vaguely makes sense, like... an AED
Laserbeaks_Fury: Hide it in a pot
Raiz0k: Hopefully the blue chips aren't NFTs.
SocraticMethod: Fun fact: Callisto Protocol from Let's Nope fame (the Dead Space clone) was originally set in PUBG universe and there are vestiges of narrative left over
SocraticMethod: The climax of callisto protocol refereces PUBG lore indirectly
EvilBadman: This rez is in other Battle Royales already, so it was a matter of time
Raiz0k: @SocraticMethod Yeah, Mandalore mentions it in his review (recommended BTW).
Nydestroyer:

Barb4rian:

fiftymcnasty: But hes just a kid whos 4

Raiz0k: They also had a paint roller, right?
KypFox: Woo
SocraticMethod: Aww, I misheard it as "Super Soaker"
KypFox: They already had grey and orange blasters, so that works
KypFox: @socraticmethod they have a super soaker like weapon
Earthenone: spongebob is under the sea, and also already a cleaning implement
matthaus_c: #KeepSpongebobWet
SocraticMethod: @KypFox nice!
SquareDotCube: except in the movie
djalternative: do we have to clean out goo lagoon?

Raiz0k: Yeah, there are non-obvious degrees of anonymity in aggregated data.
Juliamon: They're not *wrong* about Google Analytics
Raiz0k: Isn't Valve like the opposite of "you're going to X" approach? Or is that old news?
SocraticMethod: Well, if the reports about how the Valve is structured is true, you _dont_ have to work in analytics if you find a better team
Earthenone: Mr. 3 from one piece would make a great employ
LordZarano: (If you want to block Google Analytics and things like it UBlock Origin is fantastic)

EvilBadman: It's like enjoying draft but not the magic matches
DoodlestheGreat: He builds great playgrounds.
SymphonicLolita: I feel that
jessieimproved: If you've read Song of Ice and Fire, it does read like people in a world. Not a story.
Raiz0k: So he's a good game designer born about a decade too early.
Raiz0k: (at least)
matthaus_c: maps, they don't love you like I love you
SocraticMethod: No Silmarillion, I think.
Raiz0k: Bezos does have a very Smaug vibe.
SocraticMethod: But have rings to some appencises, as strange as it sounds.
TotallyNotaBeholder: again?
Earthenone: there already was one...
emberBecky: there already is one... uh oh
Raiz0k: Another one?
SocraticMethod: Rings of Power is not based in Silmarillion
InvadedOath: So if they don't have 1,2,3 does that mean they get to remake New Hope?
emberBecky: AAhhh I hope they're shutting down LoTRO
Earthenone: i liked it, i got to be a hobbit and grow pipeweed in the shire
jessieimproved: A Silmarillion book or show would be boring as bus
Juliamon: I hear "Amazon" and "MMO" and immediately [x] doubt
EvilBadman: Great news the Director of the mmo says "everyone will just move, right?"
Raiz0k: No Beej, that's Fortnite again.
Bruceski: I think it's the First Age they don't have access to? They can use the Second Age but can't talk much or show what happened to set it up.
blip2004: by the makers of New World...
asddsa28: ok
emberBecky: *not shutting down. woops. wehhh I loved LoTRO. I went back for a bit a couple years back
Melfina__: uhhhmmm
Barb4rian: New World is ... fine.
Barb4rian: I had fun with it
SnackPak_: good for them
SocraticMethod: Found the source: "We have the rights solely to The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, the appendices, and The Hobbit,” Payne says. “And that is it. We do not have the rights to The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, or any of those other books.”
Spacecarl: It was very big for a couple weeks, then vanished
RuiFaleiro: colonization: the mmo
matthaus_c: the theming on that mmo squidged me the hell out
blip2004: it was fine, but the economy got messed up as I stopped played
Juliamon: The economy was megafucked
emberBecky: ok I checked LoTRO is safe for now. phew
Mai_Andra: lotro is still going...
drcthulu: circular, like a ring
TheMerricat: Is the current LoTRO still a Turbine joint or did another studio take it over?
Lusunati:
If you're not the Fellowship, you're playing Final Fantasy 10
EvilBadman: Speaking of, the random Gollum game is releasing... This month?
CranstonSnord: maybe a Rider of Rohan, or a ranger
Lusunati: With emotes!
Barb4rian: @TheMerricat Turbine went under and another studio picked it up a while back
bo_brinkman: We should go give Magic Legends another try. Oh. Wait. What?
SquareDotCube: High Fantasy Lifestyle Simulator
SoldieroFortune: LotRO treats it as if you are a "hidden" fellowship running around causing issues for Sauron and keeping his attention off the "real" fellowship
emberBecky: @TheMerricat It's Standing Stone now. I don't know if it bought them or they changed names or what
Mai_Andra: @TheMerricat It's changed a couple of times. I think it's managed by Standing Stone now
SquareDotCube: Mine the mythril, don't mind the madness!
TimIAm: I will buy games based solely on the presence of a good fishing minigame
Lusunati: Hip and Happening Fishing Minigame
matthaus_c: how long until someone fishes up The One Ring
TheMerricat: @Barb4rian Ah shucks, I remember Turbine's first game Asheron's Call fondly. Sucks they don't exist any more.
SocraticMethod: Angband was the first LotR MMO, change my mind
Xed_Regulus: I'm surprised Serge doesn't have a show where he plays fishing mini-games
RockPusher: Weed and mead and feed
Lusunati: Sam's family has the BEST Pipeweed
TheThirdTail: It's the slow-paced kind of hedonism
Serivus: Heather, I have BAD news for you about retirement communities
emberBecky: yes the Shire in LoTRO is nice. graphics have aged now but the vibes are right
matthaus_c: gonna grow my foot hair
Serivus: Don't look up STD rates in retirement homes
matthaus_c: Bilbo doesn't make love, Bilbo -fucks-
SquareDotCube: If you're into feet then you're gonna like being a Hobbit
Lusunati: some start young! Hey Ed Greenwood!
shurtal: "I need to save the world, I will become WORM now."
TheMerricat: Scifi authors go hard when they get old, Fantasy authors just get hungry and write more food porn
Raiz0k:
Amazing how's something that was intended to be maybe borderline Arcadian, but decidedly "rural", is now described as "hedonistic"
.
Snowcookies: ty for stream
Lusunati: Afterdraft
matthaus_c: triple mother draft
cuttlefishman: ONE MOME TERMATH?

SocraticMethod: Beejdrafter?
shurtal: FNPF - WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT
Juliamon: Elesh Norn's Grand Mistakes
cuttlefishman: Dang, no more Mozart?
RockPusher: Mozart will return…
Earthenone: they are already fit
RockPusher: Threaten's the game
Juliamon: It doesn't really have a storyline
cuttlefishman: We want more mozart
They_Are_Alyx: The story seemed to be very minimal
TheMerricat: it's like wiifit you just keep doing your dailies and become buff
RockPusher:
Ian and Heather already proved their fitness
Juliamon: Mozart left an impression, for better or worse
SnackPak_: wizard 101 was a whole thing
shurtal: it was.....a bad time
Earthenone: i think we unlocked the plurality of songs for the fist of the north star at least
matthaus_c: Mozart was many things. Boring wasn't one of them
