cyclopsboi: mark rober
Korolan: he did a whole video about it and other arcade games that cheat
Korolan: (and how to cheat them)
blind_will: Yeah, but the digital ones are more obviously bogus. Because we know that the code can do essentially anything it wants without us seeing. Whereas the physical thing... it's physical - surely if we do exactly the same thing we'll get the same result. So the illusion is much stronger.

DigitalSeahorse:
TheDangerWaffle: I didn't notice that lol
an_archist2: it's a beautiful day outside

definenull:
fair
TheMerricat: Google says: "Pachinko machines take two pieces of glass for the playing field covers. The inside cover is a 1/8” plate glass (This is for sound insulation and to keep the balls on the playing field), and the outside cover is a 1/8” Plexiglas (This is to absorb shock and for protection)."
Juliamon: With how quickly our machine's balls rusted, there's a significant amount of iron
LordZarano: Since the 70s neodymium magnets have been developed, which are much stronger
Nigouki: outside Plexiglass for gamer moments
definenull: weirdly some of the nails seem to be bent… upwards?
cyclopsboi: i cant even imagine how tuning those nails goes

SymphonySolstice: yeah, all the cheap stuff was from Japan in that post-war era
DigitalSeahorse:
nyoomgoom: there was a game called Widget Workshop that had logic gates. as an elementary school kid i didn't understand how it worked at all
nyoomgoom: then in community college i learned logic gates. so i went "wait i understand widget workshop now!" found it on an old game repository and had some fun
Jillexie: "American components, Russian components, all made in Taiwan!"
mercano82: There was a joke in Back to the Future 3 where 1955 Doc Brown looks at a blown piece of electronics and says “Made in Japan? No wonder it broke.” Marty responds, “What do you mean, Doc, all the best stuff comes from Japan.”
DigitalSeahorse: which unfortunately means you get more counterfit foods like eggs in china
BrowneePointz: a reminder india has overtaken china as well
Master_Gunner: Yeah, China is *capable* of making perfectly high quality stuff, but then it costs almost as much as making it in NA or Europe.
BrowneePointz: in terms of population
avi_miller: Also, some materials for modern electronics just are mined in other places
Cptasparagus: on LTT they found out that their chinese manufacturer was selling their proprietary screwdriver design without their permission, so they contacted another supplier to talk about switching and asked them to make a prototype copy. The second manufacturer sent a prototype BEFORE they recieved the plans.
DrakoniteDev: Almost. A *lot* of the chinese fabs will try to cut corners, so you gotta stay on top of them to keep them maintaining the quality you paid for.
DigitalSeahorse: or perhaps that's a different problem entirely
JRandomHacker: Also building a chip fab is _hard_. Intel currently uses a strategy they call "Copy Exactly", where they take an existing factory and... copy it exactly - even the parts that you think wouldn't matter
Master_Gunner: Yeah, part of the high costs of good manufacturing is actually building the close relationship with the manufacturers you need to make sure you get what you want.
DigitalSeahorse: makes it harder to clean those parts
KadmosTech: @cptasparagus reminds me of the Kickstarter for Fidget Cubes... Knockoffs hit the market (and we're delivering to N. Am. before the Kickstarter even delivered their first run
DigitalSeahorse: circuit boards seem like maths
blind_will: why does the capacity care which side is negative?
blind_will: capacitor*
drizztnailo: electronics has to be wizardry i swear
DigitalSeahorse: grounding literally
Cptasparagus: @blind_will some capacitors are polar based on materials
DigitalSeahorse:
DigitalSeahorse: light
letsbelgo: @blind_will Its internally wired to be like that
DigitalSeahorse: I saw a blip
Drasvin: @DigitalSeahorse Most of them are. Especially when you get to actual computers. To a computer, everything is math.
DrakoniteDev: @blind_will the way electrolytic caps are built causes them to be polarized. if you connect it backwards with a bit too much power it'll go bang
DaxStrife: Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair.
DigitalSeahorse: lol
blind_will: @Cptasparagus yeah ok. The super-basic description of a capacitor is basically just two plates very close to each other; but I guess in reality that are made of special stuff - and not the same stuff on each side. That makes sense.
DigitalSeahorse: yes!
DigitalSeahorse: fyi, I used posca for some of those DB earring parts to get a white enough base coat
Drasvin:
DigitalSeahorse:
Mazrae:
Lvl 6!!!! You fool you are going to kill us all!!!
DigitalSeahorse:
DigitalSeahorse: heheh
blind_will: Oh no! It's a lvl 6 Killer-Ohm !
DrakoniteDev: @blind_will ceramic caps are basically two plates. electrolytic are a paper like film in a tight coil with a gel
DigitalSeahorse: yusss
JRandomHacker: I've laced all the cables under my desk. Deeply satisfying.
DigitalSeahorse: cable lacing I think is a bit like friendship bracelet making
DigitalSeahorse: if it's for servers or similar contraptions
DigitalSeahorse: we can now see the light
DigitalSeahorse: woop
DigitalSeahorse:
Sk1nnee: is 4 on our side?
blind_will:
@DrakoniteDev
letsbelgo:
DigitalSeahorse:
teddywhosabear: Sounded like a halloween scream box that needs new batteries
nyoomgoom: measuring tape goes brrrrrr
Drasvin: Motorized tape measure?
TreeGamer35: omg alex... the sound startled the hell out of me
DigitalSeahorse: hhehehheh
DigitalSeahorse: I want one
DaxStrife: That is the chonkiest tape measure I've ever seen.
TheDangerWaffle: LMAO
Strebenherz: Amazing
definenull: amazing
MechaKuuga:
That makes a terrible sound
nyoomgoom: good for accessibility
TheDangerWaffle: yeah auto tapes are good

LaconicLad: I need one of those. I didn't know it existed until just now, but I need one.
jacqui_lantern234:
i unironically have 4 good AAA's on me now, the only issue is that i fuckin LIVE IN NIAGARA
TreeGamer35: i just charged a set of AAA's last night
DigitalSeahorse: there's probably more batteries at the moonbase
LithelyUnshod: @jacqui_lantern234 Same but Kitchener
LordZarano: All my AAAs are Eneloops, all my AAs too. They've lasted me years
Cptasparagus: @jacqui_lantern234 I read Nigeria at first
blind_will: I guess if the capacitance is too high, it will still be lit for a full cycle, and so it won't blink.
DigitalSeahorse: Cptasparagus I misread a coin I found at the launderette years ago and months later reread it as Niagara instead of Nigeria too
DigitalSeahorse: my disappointment it wasn't foreign
SnackPak_:
blind_will: It's alive. It's ALIVE!
Mazrae: Hold for effect
DigitalSeahorse: woo see the pachinko glow too
letsbelgo: is it?
blind_will: (and I was wrong about the capacitance thing I said. I didn't think that through properly.)
SnackPak_: ooooo
Juliamon: oh, so it is
DigitalSeahorse: is it?!
MTGRanger:
Juliamon: it doesn't go completely dark
Texan_Reverend: Extremely slow and brief dimming.
an_archist2: what are we going to name this?
SkaespearesBoys: tao = R*C the time charge connstannt for ann RC circuit

why

Juliamon: there are now 17 competing standards
LordZarano: Is it something to do with n-type transistors and p-type transistors?
Mazrae: If there are 2 different ways just flip a coin to choose which one to use
DrakoniteDev: @LordZarano nah, one series was invented in one part of the world, the other in a different part
blind_will: But A4 has clear benefits over letter size... so that's easier than the transistor thing where its just a totally arbitrary choice.
DigitalSeahorse:
ding dong
cyclopsboi: speed
JRandomHacker: Yup supercaps are trying to fill the middle ground
DigitalSeahorse: or for smoke detectors sort of
DigitalSeahorse: just a lithium battery, not a capacitor
Strebenherz: Wait, roads?
cyclopsboi: a capacitor can discharge all their charge at a SUBSTANTIALLY faster rate
mercano82: capacitors store power via opposite charge attraction between the two plates; batteries store power via chemical reactions.
LordZarano: We put small incendiary devices in our ears even (wireless earphones)
Brozard: Yep
DigitalSeahorse: and steam from cooking if you've forgotten to turn on the vent
Drasvin: Depends on the type of smoke detector. There are radioactive detectors and also optical detectors
DrakoniteDev: There are two types of smoke detectors. One type uses radioactive decay (usually americium), and the other type just use light
7gorobei: zinc copper
rosesmcgee: The source in a smoke detector is an alpha emitter. If your smoke detector is emitting neutrons contact a doctor and the DOE
DigitalSeahorse:
cyclopsboi: anything that lets electrons off would work
DigitalSeahorse:
cells
DigitalSeahorse: AAAA!
ContingentCat: secret batteries, sneaky
DigitalSeahorse:
DigitalSeahorse: uhoh
MalFnord: tricksy batteries, precious
DigitalSeahorse: one inside the part you took off?
7gorobei: AAAA batteries are used in active digitizer pens
Riandisa: At least you have a VOD for reference
Lord_Hosk: On this side 9 inches up from the bottom
blind_will: If you repeated take it apart and rebuild it, you can build up enough spare parts to eventually build a second one. That's how they reproduce.
DigitalSeahorse: watch the VOD?
DigitalSeahorse: there's a screw missing from the side if that's a hole
Juliamon: alas, poor sushi
blind_will: @DigitalSeahorse yeah, near the front, at the bottom, on the left side of the machine.
blind_will: and another hole near the top in the middle?
MalFnord: Sushi is TTSF's version of HL3
DigitalSeahorse: I pointed it out there, oh
DigitalSeahorse: nm then
blind_will: a bending robot.
7gorobei: bender bending rodriguez
blind_will: make a nice tent peg.
ContingentCat: oooo
SnackPak_: that's the good stuff
DigitalSeahorse:
DigitalSeahorse: hooked on bending
DigitalSeahorse: nice
teddywhosabear: oh dang.
