TheDevil_Risen: i need to replace my controller tho, its shredded :D
PMAvers: I honestly forget about paddles all the time.
Master_Gunner: Yeah, now that I have a controller with those back buttons, I have the thumbstick buttons mapped to the back buttons by default.
Earthenone: screwpoint was canceld the week remember
LoadingReadyRun: @Master_Gunner that's a great idea
MoxleyUnhinged: im on my lunch break from my sword-training day-camp. this is a great way to spend it

Juliamon: Or is a spudger a tiny crowbar?
DeM0nFiRe: Gordon Freeman known for carrying a spudger
TheDevil_Risen: @MoxleyUnhinged That's fun, im on lunch break from work haha
Arclight_Dynamo: Pressure-fit plastic is so heinous. Everything should be machined aluminum with user-accessible machine screws.
MoxleyUnhinged: i probable concussion from sparring later is gonna be *great*
Kentosaurus: C-3PO in episode I with his parts showing
DaxStrife: It's crying out in distress.
accountmadeforants: We're still seeing that occasionally (e.g., the Switch Pro Controller), but what's really frustrating is when they use fake greebles behind transparent parts (there are a few phones like that).
Nigouki: transparent plastic needs highly polished molds which is an extra effort. plus clear plastic tends to be more brittle
VorlonScout: Fun fact about that MS 2.4ghz dongle -- if you have two in the same room, they will irrevocably fight with each other. Even if you have one controller paired with each, the receivers will "steal" each others' controllers when they can.
Master_Gunner: One of the reasons why I went with an 8BitDo controller was that it came with a 2.4GHz dongle. I ain't messing around with bluetooth if I can avoid it.
accountmadeforants: The proprietary thing does serve its purpose, way less overhead, and they can do things like transmit-only I/O which is faster and more battery efficient. (Same reason many wireless keyboards do it.)
RockPusher: Makes for extra-fun fights
KingKool2099: @Master_Gunner My computer never worked with the 2.4GHz stuff. Had to move to bluetooth
TheDevil_Risen: tiltyhCheers tiltyhCheers tiltyhEXTREME
Arclight_Dynamo: It's slightly out of phase with the wi-fi signal, and the two signals destructively align every 40 minutes.
Arclight_Dynamo: "Warranty void if seal broken" is illegal in the US - do we know about Canada?
accountmadeforants: Security Torx: AKA, figure out how to break the pin inside the screw so you can use regular Torx
TheDevil_Risen: @Arclight_Dynamo Thanks Rossman!
KingKool2099: how expensive
Arclight_Dynamo: Part vs. component
accountmadeforants: (But yeah, probably not easy with the really really tiny torx bits)
SymphonySolstice: xbox controllers are too big for my tiny raccoon hands
accountmadeforants: I wish controllers had the joysticks at the bottom and a really good d-pad up top
ArdCollider: lol I pestered siracusa a *lot* for Unix, Apple, and U2 shit when we were both at the same university
accountmadeforants: Or yeah, the reverse, not sure how I ended up with that earlier comment
Master_Gunner: For my hands, and how I play games, I actually really like the xbox controller layout.
Arclight_Dynamo: I mean... you have a 3D printer. Want to mod an Xbox controller?
LordZarano: WiiU Pro iirc
Nigouki: you want the glorious Steam Controller :V
Kentosaurus: yeah, the weird steam controller
LurkerSpine: Victrix might have one
7gorobei: there are modular controllers with swappable pods of sticks/pads
Mai_Andra: The ones I've seen are modular, so you can flip the positions.
ritchards: So you're saying there's a tech space for LRR to get into...
Cptasparagus: Turtle beach stealth pivot is kind of like that but theyre offset still
SymphonySolstice: yeah that's why I like the switch controllers, the stick is right on my thumb on the left hand, and then I move the right one with my thumb joint instead of the fingerprint
SymphonySolstice: I wish so bad they could connect to the PC
7gorobei: thrustmaster eswap pro has full modular top sections
phoenixletmeuseadashd: The joycons can be connected to pc!
accountmadeforants: You can even use the RingCon on PC if you really want to :)
accountmadeforants: (The RingCon being the ring thing that was used for RingFit)
Shadwhawk: Looks like the eswap pro only lets you move 3/4 of the 'sections. The buttons aren't movable and are in the standard position
KragonEx: are there any homebrew games that are goos with that @accountmadeforants
KragonEx: good8
TheDevil_Risen: it's better
phoenixletmeuseadashd: Valve has serious dev ADHD but yeah the Deck helped a lot
TheDevil_Risen: and the input mapper is far better
accountmadeforants: @KragonEx No clue, there's a GitHub repository for a driver that maps it to Xbox inputs, so presumably you could play any game you'd like with it https://github.com/ringrunnermg/Ringcon-Driver
ritchards: just a lil guy!
TheDevil_Risen: yeah its a step backwards for accessability
ritchards: weights are useful for vibration
KragonEx: Also, every time some tinker tailor..., im reminded of my favorite DS9 character garak

Cptasparagus: yeah ps5 controller batteries honk
LurkerSpine: And people wonder why I prefer the Xbox AA battery setup
MoxleyUnhinged: lrrFINE @TheDevil_Risen
KragonEx: i broke one of my ps4 controllers, i loved the process of removing them and replacing them with glow in the dark ones
Arclight_Dynamo: Petition for USB-B.
KragonEx: the thumbsticks
KragonEx: this is alot of work just to get to the buttons
Master_Gunner: apparently why the original XBox controller was the way it was, is they locked in the design for the circuit boards before they even hired someone to design the actual controller.
MoxleyUnhinged: @Master_Gunner oh good - forced product development
LoadingReadyRun: @LordZarano USB type B was only for USB 1/2, right? USB-C just uses the same port for everything
KragonEx: @Master_Gunner that sounds like microsoft
Sethalidos: @LoadingReadyRun correct
RockPusher: tiltyhPLS tiltyhEXTREME
phoenixletmeuseadashd: that's also how it goes...
Sethalidos: USB-B had micro and mini
7gorobei: jenga
MoxleyUnhinged: OPA!
RockPusher: Honestly answering anything definitively about the USB specs is extremely difficult
Master_Gunner: @LoadingReadyRun USB-C is actually independent of the USB 1/2/3/etc protocols. It's just a physical connector that's also the standard for certain implementations of USB 3(.4 Ultra SuperSpeed Power Delivery or whatever they call it these days).
Arclight_Dynamo: There is a USB 3.2 USB-B standard.
RockPusher: Massive nerd that I am, even I have little desire to read through the many many documents that make up the USB specs nowadays
Master_Gunner: There is a USB 3 Type B port that has an extra stub on it for the additional pins.
Arclight_Dynamo: I really hate what they've done to USB standards naming...
LordZarano: @LoadingReadyRun USB 3.0 Type B has a weird addon section https://media.startech.com/cms/products/main/usb315cbxm.main.jpg
KeytarCat: always good to have clean pads
UtilityPunk: Fry's in the title for a reason
LoadingReadyRun: @LordZarano we have a bunch of those cables. I think they were mostly used on early usb3 hard drives (before the usb-c spec was locked in)
Master_Gunner: Yeah, USB 3 Type B and Micro-B disappeared pretty quickly after USB-C came in.
Cptasparagus: whats the budget for TTSF? theres a build your own fractal vise kit on amazon for like $3k
Master_Gunner: oh yeah, that solder sucker is really nice
7gorobei: marshall uses rodico putty to hold things when servicing watches, you just need a giant wad of rodico
SnackPak_: ooo, a tip that isn't plastic
Sethalidos: Ian
LordZarano: Also, yes both those images were C to B cables. For maximum cursedness
UtilityPunk: I found a lot of desoldering braids don't come with enough flux. Good flux makes them *really* nice to use. Otherwise, solder suckers are satisfying
RockPusher: In case anyone wants to stare into the void, you can find the USB specs here -> https://www.usb.org/documents
Arclight_Dynamo: God, USB-C truly is the cloaca of electronics, huh?
Juliamon: oh noooOOoooooOOOooOOOo
Zevodactyl: May have to call someone a solder sucker next time I need a creative non-insult
UWDJohn: melting a little solder on the tip might help

RockPusher: Mr. Blobby should not be allowed anywhere near a soldering iron
DandyGeek: esbideRainbowStoned
Cptasparagus: @LoadingReadyRun Ive always had problems with Xbox controller shoulders going back to the 360, I always just used to shim them with paper
Juliamon: ah, an ongoing design flaw
MalFnord: Why would they fix it? It means they can sell more controllers when the shoulder buttons break
Arclight_Dynamo: IIRC, there was some sort of voltage oopsie design flaw that made middle-click mouse button switches go bad very quickly. I wonder if it's a similar problem, here?
Cptasparagus: we should be thankful that we don't have controllers-as-a-service
MalFnord: Yet. We don't have controllers-as-a-service YET
LathosTiran: could argue that stadia was service as controller? Kappa
ritchards: "get up, down and left as the base service, right is DLC!"
SquareDotCube: The SNES controller is very simple yet very resilient, it just doesn't have the ergonomic improvements of today
Cptasparagus: @LathosTiran unironically my stadia controller is still going strong
SquareDotCube: when it's trying to play taps through your multimeter that's a pretty telling sign
Cptasparagus: I got it for free, actually I was kind of paid $50 to beta test it because my friend who works for google gave me the one he got for a christmas present, and they refunded me $50 when they shut the service down
Juliamon: ha
coachNelly: fold in the cheese
DaxStrife: "XBox controllers require force" sounds exactly like an XBox ad.

Arclight_Dynamo: Google says low-temp solders are more brittle.
ritchards: we can also make stuff up, just visit the House of Lies!
Arclight_Dynamo: Ah-ha! Low-temp solders are brittle because they're made with bismuth, which is evidently a brittle metal.

Arclight_Dynamo: Solder should come with, like, a Gas Mark equivalent so you know what to set your iron to.
Arclight_Dynamo: "Set iron to Gas Mark 4"
DeM0nFiRe: Counter intuitively, lowere temp soldering irons can increase the risk of burning out components, because getting the part you want up to temp slowly gives more time for the heat to dissapate to places you dont want it to be
