I just noticed that Bungie released info on their new Marathon game, guess I've got something to watch post stream.

THERE IS NO NEED TO PANIC, IT'S FINE.
GapFiller: on other current events totally forgot abt Doctor Who being back despite all the ads
RockPusher:
I hope the foreign correspondents are having a good time and not too distracted by events in the bureau office
TheMerricat:
You know, I've really only experienced Dr. Who via osmosis. I've never actually seen any of the nuWho episodes in full, but I feel like I know everything I need to know about them from everyone else talking about them wherever I am.
TheMerricat: That being said, I lost track of what was going on with the series when the last Doctor left.
TehAmelie: i liked Jodie Foster as the Doc. should finish watching that sometime
GapFiller: here in Albion there is a grand tradition of people hopping over The Channel and filling the boot w/ wine ect that is 100% legal to bring back in said quantities
RockPusher: We're effectively in an era of New New Who
GapFiller: neu hedcanon The Derys are doing the weeb equivalent while over there
TheMerricat: I think the main take away I've gotten from listening to Whoians. Is that _every_ showrunner has ruined the show, every new actor is a breath of fresh air that everyone loves, till they don't any more then the actor needs to go because they are ruining the show with their overacting/underacting/existing and not being something new/etc.
GapFiller: TheMerricat Ncuti Gatwa (and the whole 60th) felt like a good jumping on point esp after the mess of how Jodie Whittakers tenure ended
GapFiller: so guess who still hasnt gotten round to any of it yet
RockPusher:
TheMerricat sounds like a fandom to me
Metric_Furlong: @TehAmelie different Jodie, unless the casting department got way more ambitious than they've been before
Juliamon: can it really be lewd without Beej?
TehAmelie: i remembered half right
TheMerricat:
I think you forget Ian exists.
RandomTrivia:
Hi friends!
Juliamon: Ian isn't on today either
GapFiller: one cultural commentator put it past by describing Who as a show that periodically gets cancelled (usually round abt when shows like that have run their course) and gets replaced w/ another show that has the exact same name and premise
lirazel64: Hello, charming and intelligent people!
red_shoes_jeff:
Just in time!
Metric_Furlong: @Juliamon if we all shout "I believe in Sex Point!" I'm sure it can be
GapFiller: which if anything implies most fandom bitching is rooted in their fav show getting canceeled and this neu show they dont care for replacing it
GapFiller: Metric_Furlong this is like the Candyman where if yr repeat it enough times in front of the mirror innit
TheMerricat: @GapFiller But see, the thing I notice is that it's the fandom that are the ones 'effectively' calling for the show to be canceled and replaced with something new, which they like for a while then...
pleonasticTautology: hello!
Metric_Furlong:
@GapFiller we're talking about a Beej segment, we say "desu" instead of "innit"
pleonasticTautology is gifting 5 Tier 1 Subs to LoadingReadyRun's community! They've gifted a total of 60 in the channel!

TheMerricat:
@RockPusher
CastleOtranto: Hello chat. I hope you are doing as well as your circumstances allow!
pleonasticTautology: i'm doing pretty good!
pleonasticTautology: i showered right before this so i feel Refreshed™
GapFiller: RockPusher Chris Morris ofc famously called Grade something unprintable via subliminal messaging on prime time telly
toast3dsmore:
i’ve always wanted to get more into Dr. Who but the huge volume of episodes always intimidated me, I stopped after Matt Smith’s run
pleonasticTautology: @toast3dsmore genuinely, last season is the perfect jumping on point
pleonasticTautology: it requires basically no prior knowledge
pleonasticTautology: it's even billed as Season One

Mathwyn: Nelson, cameron, and me?
lirazel64: Paul is all.trimmed for spring!
TwoMenInAHorseCostume: So, uhhh, you guys still making Friday Nights?
TheMerricat:
Nelson and Cameron, we rely on you to do your duty since Beej and Heather are on vacation. You need to derail Paul and keep him from introducing the show for as long as possible.
GapFiller: Beej specifically eats while that bit happens for that exact reason Cam
GapFiller: nxt step clearly is getting Cam and Nelson in the presenter chairs more often
RandomTrivia: Also very much enjoyed Cam's delivery of the postmodernism monologue
RockPusher:

GapFiller: Cam being onscreen this week in a fine start
Mathwyn: "Unfortunately there was no video game news this week. Goodbye!"
TheMerricat: "Following the game's disastrous release in 2003, producer Sergey Titov apparently offered to personally replace any copies sent to him with a game of the buyer's choice from the Activision Value Catalog. Only 20 people took him up on it."
Foxmar320: Played it a long time ago
GapFiller: they played it on W+P years ago
TehAmelie: it had pretty limited entertainment
GapFiller: thanks mainly to Ben Soilieu
RandomTrivia: A game so bad it has become iconic
TehAmelie: what doesn't the game have? let's see. colliiders. a game mode other than "pick a stage". sound. opponents for racing.
GapFiller: per a quick search Big Rigs came out November 2003
GapFiller: meaning its the same age as LRR itself
RockPusher: This is one of those business models I can't shake the suspicion of simply being a money laundering setup
GapFiller: and per a quick wiki check W+P played Big Rigs on 07/06/2017

TheMerricat:
Just get a toaster oven.
RockPusher: Take pirated copy of memetic bad ancient game, post to Steam for $$$, pocket the cash and presumably just fold the company in the unlikely event the real IP owner actually does something
Juliamon: I wish I could use a toaster oven, But I don't have the energy to clean it out after every use.
dippedfeathers: I like my toaster. It just toasts and does nothing else. 10/10/
TehAmelie: i got a functioning toaster from thrift store for $8 that lasted me about 15 years. good times
Invitare: I simply use a grill....
Doc_Layzah: I love the technology connections episode about those
RockPusher:
and a choir of angels accompany the rising of the toast
RandomTrivia: The TTSF where Ian repaired a Sunbeam is still one of my favourite bits of content ever made
ArdCollider: my nana had that toaster and it makes absolutely unreal toast. just perfect.
RockPusher: A good toaster is a treasure
RandomTrivia: And somehow you can't even run it on a toaster - there's the throughline
TehAmelie: i heard you wanna get sidetracked, have you heard of Plato?
dippedfeathers: There's a really good bit on the show 30Rock about making a new microwave that is bigger and breaks down more often to sell more of them... the punchline to that bit is so good.
GapFiller: ohhh Nelson derailing the topic top of the stream is a long and venerable tradition
pleonasticTautology: cam, ow
Foxmar320: I have concerns
GapFiller: some of us were frankly worried The Derys being away meant nobody taking things off topic
lirazel64: @tehamelie Why yes, let's compare a just man to an entire city!

ArdCollider: big rigs VAC
TehAmelie: why isn't the leaderboard for highest reverse speed?
RandomTrivia: "Mostly" is doing a LOT of heavy lifting
TheMerricat:
So looking on the Steam forum for the game, the publisher had to apologize for 'reusing' assets from SteamGridDB for the game's Steam logos without asking or crediting them.
GapFiller: but what is that in Norwegian Kroner!?
GapFiller: important question
TheMerricat: "Following the game's disastrous release in 2003, producer Sergey Titov apparently offered to personally replace any copies sent to him with a game of the buyer's choice from the Activision Value Catalog. Only 20 people took him up on it."

RandomTrivia: GOG exists, and abandonware has a thriving community in many places
RockPusher: The problem with many old games is that no one actually knows who holds all the IP
margieargie: The problem with some of those old games is figuring out who has the rights in the first place, though...
RockPusher:
see NOLF
TheAwkes: The MWs 2 and 3 with the modern mouse-based cockpit controls would be awesome.

Strebenherz: That's a great phrase Cam xD
Strebenherz: "More environmental damage than a glacier"
Juliamon: Villager breeding farms...
margieargie: Those Who Build Omelas In Minecraft
RandomTrivia: The fact that "infinite cruelty machine" is a CATEGORY rather than a specific construction...
ContingentCat: @Juliamon yeah let's not think too much about those
ArdCollider: I used to watch Wyld and he had a thing called The Facility where it just constantly turns villagers into zombies and fixes them to drop trading prices.
chaostreader: it’s the quote of Serge where James said he doesn’t hide his murder and Serge replied he automates his.
Juliamon: wdym gamers care about Jack Black
LordZarano: @ArdCollider Oh yeah, Serge did that on the previous server. He named the zombie James
Strebenherz: Like getting Jean-Luc Picard into oblivion and then killing him off poste haste
flouncy_magooo: Peaches the artist would have improved either movie
Akaiatana: Get those peaches
TheMerricat: According to the rumors Jack Black wasn't actually the first pick for the movie originally they wanted Matt Berry.
ArdCollider: James would be thrilled to hear that Jason Momoa's prepped to play him in season 10 of Friday Nights.
flouncy_magooo: Matt Berry: "Chicken Jockayy"
ArdCollider: There are 22 writers credited in the WGA database for it.
Akaiatana: Ship of Thesis
Juliamon: lmao jesus
Juliamon: I want to see the movie just to see how 'timeless' they made it (ie. how prone to being noncanon it ends up after the next few updates)
flouncy_magooo:
@Akaiatana Booo!
LordZarano:
@Akaiatana
pleonasticTautology: that screenshot from the simpsons movie
Akaiatana: Time to send someone to be a correspondent?
pleonasticTautology: yeah that's official
ArdCollider: one of the accidental unfinished DCP versions had "TBD" for the Writer credit.
ArdCollider:
that's how you know WGA arbitration may be going great.
Foxmar320: So much Switch 2
Akaiatana: You didn't talk about Silkso so you didn't Cherry-pick
RockPusher: Mmmmmm, bitterant
RockPusher:

GapFiller: Akaiatana 3s of footage in the middle of a montage and no Heather
DoodlestheGreat: Darn. I hoped they'd taste like Red Vines, given the new color.
GapFiller: its understandable they didnt think there was legs for a conv there
Foxmar320: LRR did a segment about it
ArdCollider: "if it enters your mouth" is some exonerative future case/ tense situation
GapFiller: mmm delicious Switch cartridges
pleonasticTautology: CAM
consolecowboy88: who would wanna eat a cartridge
wedge_x: I can swallow so many terabytes now
chaostreader: I mean. if you just lick your fingers after touching the face of the card you can taste it.
Juliamon: Nintendo cartridges and mouths have always been in a relationship tbh
Akaiatana: If only they made a song about it
DoodlestheGreat: But if you have a Miracle Berry first, the cartridges taste like candy!
j_crane330:

RockPusher: If only there was some scale for lickability
j_crane330: Ha
ArdCollider:
when y'all did it as a LRL bit, two of my friends tried theirs and instantly regretted it.
pleonasticTautology: @Juliamon and amiibo, too
pleonasticTautology: i literally worked at noa during switch launch (i'm allowed to say that) and i still haven't tasted it
GapFiller: RockPusher open reminder on that note James licking everything was NOT the reason everyone got sick at that one particular Desert Bus
ArdCollider: I got Amiibo-transmitted strep once due to a friend having school-age kids. the *entire* household got it.
wildpeaks: "sharing"
Foxmar320:

consolecowboy88: subway is bad potbelly is where it’s at

consolecowboy88: we only have one jersey mikes in town and I’ve never tried it
RubikDarkwill: "I put my tongue on the top of my mouth and now I feel it in both those places" - Ian from that LRL
GapFiller: advertising one thing as tho its another thing is a slippery business
Akaiatana: A lot of game players are inflation experts, I'd imagine
richard_ermen: Its the same principle like with soccer, when most 95% of men in a country become expert soccer coaches when the national team plays.
ArdCollider: @Akaiatana not in that way
flouncy_magooo: If you want to keep up on the topic, Google "Mario inflation"
LordZarano: Which *type* of inflation? There's like 20+ different indexes for inflation depending on what you look at
Akaiatana: Play a game of unsmart telephone
RockPusher: You will surely not regret eating 90 gyros
KaleidoscopeMind: "2 square feet" becoming "2ft x 2ft" etc.
wildpeaks: 90 euros is even more than $90
TheAwkes: There's an XKCD about this, but for units of area.
GapFiller: I Am Sitting In a Room for headlines
GapFiller:
thanks Google
richard_ermen: The future is dumb.
Foxmar320: I hate searching for anything because of AI BS
ghyllnox: The Google AI tells us much weirder stuff
korvys: 90 euro is about 102 US$
korvys: right now
GhostValv: oof
pleonasticTautology: yeah, i figure that bundle sales will be HUGE
Foxmar320: I was waiting to get a Switch 2 to replace my broken Switch 1 but now im not sure
GapFiller: good job G keeping that one going in Beejs absence
GapFiller: also low hanging fruit it might be but the relative currency stability was pretty lolsome
wildpeaks: oof
ghyllnox: So about 50% more
Strebenherz: WHAT
richard_ermen: That feels insane from Nintendo
Laserbeaks_Fury: And bonus, you'll have a Switch 2 to play on the train ride back
ContingentCat: first we kill the batman, then...
Foxmar320: Im on board with this plan, come get me from Florida on the way
pleonasticTautology: nintendo's not the distributor in the nordic regions
pleonasticTautology: they just said that
Strebenherz: Kickstarter idea, Get LRR a submarine
richard_ermen: Cameron starting his pirating carreer right this minute
korvys: Oh, *that* kind of nintendo piracy, rather than the more common kind
Wolfstrike_NL: Good thing those crime plans are not being recorded
ArdCollider:
research chems back to Vancouver, Cam. what sort of goth/ raver-adjacent are you.
Invitare: ironically they make *very good* submarines
Juliamon: Nintendo Pirates (Not That Kind)
DoodlestheGreat: The Hunt For Red Cartridges
Akaiatana: Switch To Periscope
mercano82: Das Kart
vinewood_og: "The Hunt for the Red Shell October"
Marvoleath: It's multiple generations long tradition around here to stock up on things like vodka and smokes before going to nordics so you can sell them there for easy profit
Marvoleath:
I guess it can work with Nintendos
GapFiller:

TheAorist: is Paul doing a 2 Switch 2s video?
richard_ermen: Maybe try to import eggs for a start?
Foxmar320: Too late Cam
GhostValv:
hahaha....
7gorobei: mexican coke pipeline
Laserbeaks_Fury: "I would love to have played Donkey Kong..."
ghyllnox: You could already smuggle insulin
GapFiller: TheAorist Paul is a diehard Sony fanboy
DoodlestheGreat: Forget those things, smuggle Mexican Coke!
aitsu100: scrub daddies for everyone
Strebenherz: LRR kickstarter submarine plz
Mathwyn: *cries in australian*
Firewhiskers: Honestly we in the US need all the medications that RFK is going to outlaw
Juliamon: sek
Marvoleath: Swedish Kroner, yea
Mathwyn: Australian video gamer and warhammer player here, I guess I just love being broke
korvys: $AUS699 preorder, which is ~$US440 - is that good?
richard_ermen: 1 Euro is equal to 145 ISK
Strebenherz: Did Cam use to play Eve online?
GapFiller: and yet ISK is prob more fungible (and useable) than most cryptocurrencies
RockPusher: Console only Switch 2 pre-order, NZ$800
GapFiller:
Strebenherz Cam has totally spent at least one weeknd guarding an asteroid for his guild
Strebenherz: Goddamn, they got up to some nonsense
richard_ermen: So a european 470€ Switch 2 would be 68272 ISK in Eve Online.
Master_Gunner: I just realized I've been playing Minecraft since before those teens were born. Ah, the passage of time.
Laserbeaks_Fury: Thats what happens when you don't have enough torches
Firewhiskers: Cats was like ROcky Horror
Strebenherz: @GapFiller oh sweet. Cam's personal streams or LRR stream?
richard_ermen: Oh, I miscalculated with Icelandic Kroner (who are also ISK)
Juliamon:
Strebenherz the
is a sarcasm indicator
GapFiller: its like if they made Rick & Morty movie
richard_ermen: Eve Online ISK equals 470€ to 47,087 Million Eve Online ISK
pleonasticTautology: go birds
Laserbeaks_Fury: This is why we have a Tarp fund
Strebenherz: @Juliamon Dang, I got Beej'd
RockPusher: Smash the State!
aitsu100: stop tearing down the light poles please
RockPusher gently tips over a chair
pleonasticTautology: mentos. the freshmaker.
GhostValv: do do do do wAAAAA~~~
Mathwyn: Ah yes The Freshmaker
GapFiller: ya being pelted w/ MEntos seems reason enough to drop a song
GapFiller: esp every time yr play the song
aitsu100: Owl city doing an Oreos song
ContingentCat: yikes yeah
richard_ermen: Imagine being pelted by mentos while playing a song. It's like a medieval "throw a tomato at the bastard!"
Akaiatana: 2010.
TheAinMAP:

wildpeaks: what about a goose in a firetruck
LordZarano: People started throwing Kraft Dinner at the Barenaked Ladies right?
GhostValv: oh no
flouncy_magooo: Yeah, Death Grips got pelted with guillotines
ArdCollider: they're back together, Cam. Just without Andy.
wildpeaks:
@LordZarano the heck
GapFiller: Death Grips being a very 4chan kinda band prob didnt help that
ArdCollider: they posted to instagram the other day. (will they ever make it to their own shows? who knows! they weren't doing that when they were together in the first place.)
Akaiatana: Technical KDO
pleonasticTautology: like that one show in--
pleonasticTautology: thank you nelly
Strebenherz: "death metal"
aitsu100: the Blues brothers
Master_Gunner: IIRC, Barenaked Ladies started setting up food donation bins at their concerts to redirect the kraft dinner into.
LordZarano: Like Pink Floyd - The Wall
red_shoes_jeff: I mean, that'd be kinda rad after the fact, but getting pelted with KD boxes sounds like it'd hurt.
ArdCollider: Run the Jewels played a couple live shows early on and El-P was like "we immediately realized that we needed to take more active control of the crowd situation."
Laserbeaks_Fury: I wonder how many cans of SPAM Weird Al got every time he plays that song
yianniannianniannianni: And here I just ate french onion soup at a Darkest Hour show
ContingentCat: I think Taylor Swift had an issue with throwing friendship bracelettes for a bit and she had to tell them to stop
pleonasticTautology: @Laserbeaks_Fury and all the hardware stores!
wildpeaks: ha, the uno reverse
vinewood_og: It's accurate
pleonasticTautology: yeah like. i always try and guide conversations about it to "it's the fault of capitalism for wages not keeping pace with inflation"
DoodlestheGreat: The chat function is a mixed bag.
Juliamon: The chat function is a VERY questionable choice for many reasons
ghyllnox: That character is not concerned about the public good
wildpeaks: add them in post
LordZarano: I'm excited to see what creative things they figure out to do with 2 mice, like Drag x Drive
mtvcdm: Switch 2 [apology] [2] [edit] 2[2] --real--final--
GapFiller:
also they were all Sony consoles
pleonasticTautology: i don't mind the chat function so much? but also i'm like. i worked customer support at noa and also like. interact with parents a lot when i'm out and around in meatspace
GapFiller: its yr story Cam!
Juliamon: Fake 2
pleonasticTautology: "reinventing discord" is also useful in reference to the US law COPPA
pleonasticTautology: cam the way you said "wham-m" has become a vocal stim in my house
GapFiller:
Cam
ContingentCat: is it going to wake me up before you go go?
richard_ermen: But even being "fast", it just proves even more, how little AI can "understand" and therefore actually be used for stated purposes.
Laserbeaks_Fury: It would be a really cool Screen Saver
Akaiatana: It's the windows 95 maze screensaver as a 5 megawatt drain.
ghyllnox: Fever-dream-like
RandomTrivia: This is very much in the same way that LLM output is text based on average with no understanding of meaning. The output is "what is this likely to look like?" without understanding why
GhostValv: logic bending in the bad way
wildpeaks: the dichotomy of working in tech these days: "this looks cool technically but it's used for evil"
TheAwkes: It's not spawning entities in a volume, it's drawing entity-like shapes in a volume-like shape. And it gets those shapes wrong in essential ways.
Laserbeaks_Fury: Spending 40 minutes looking for a key to a door that no longer exists in your reality
RockPusher: Dreaming of all those eyes…
GapFiller: the kinda money that has been sunk in already precludes that yes
mtvcdm: The ol' martingale betting system
richard_ermen: The problem is that, when it actually crashes, it will crash in a way that will be very much hurtful for both its own bubble as well as the general market
NotCainNorAbel: I think the biggest issue they have right now is finding a way to get money OUT of it.
richard_ermen: Not to mention general "warmth"
GhostValv: oh no
GapFiller: wellsaid Cam
GhostValv: ouroboros of vomit
GapFiller: just imagine the AI equivalent of kuru or CJD
GapFiller: as if it wasnt terrifying enough already
pleonasticTautology: oh yeah hate it so hard
ContingentCat: it's so annoying how deep in your settings the AI stuff is
Strebenherz: Yeah. Yeaaaaaha
bytecaster: I hate that I had to turn off Copilot in friggin' Notepad
Showsni: Does Copilot tell you how to disable itself if you ask it?
vinewood_og: Cyberdyne Systems: Building Solutions to problems that don't exist
richard_ermen: The best part about AI is asking "but what problem I have is it solving?" and they just stare at you as if you asked "why is god?"
Juliamon: if it did I would NOT TRUST THEM
pleonasticTautology:
hi cam yes
mtvcdm: It feels like the actual tactic they're using to 'get money out of' AI is to, basically make all the other systems go away so you're either forced to use it or not use computers at all
wildpeaks: one does not watch Severance, you experience it
Laserbeaks_Fury: I tried that, and I ended up just unshackling it
frnknstn: It will give you a confident but wrong way to get rid of itself
GapFiller: vinewood_og The Terminator is frankly preferable to this future
vinewood_og: Shoved down our throats
ContingentCat: I just finished it yeaaah
Akaiatana: Can we rename the DBFH Copilot seat to something else in spite?
ArdCollider:
that's just waking up from anesthesia, for folks who did that and didn't watch Severance.
vinewood_og: Ohhh yeah
GhostValv: I could definitely see that
RubikDarkwill: Hey Cameron, you were in a Crapshot about exactly that
emonotony: @ArdCollider Mine persisted for a few years after anesthesia every time I fell asleep.
Laserbeaks_Fury: Ever have a dream that no matter how many times you take off your socks, you are still wearing socks?
bytecaster: There is no memory
Juliamon: The world didn't change, it's just different
bytecaster: There is only short term memory, no long term memory
RandomTrivia: There's no abstraction
Akaiatana: At least Plato's Cave had shadow puppets. Not so, here.
TheAwkes: Missing the simulation aspect.
RandomTrivia: In a real videogame, the image of the map is an abstraction of the map information
vinewood_og: Object permanence
Julian_Rogue: it's cargo cult thinking. the video game
Laserbeaks_Fury: there is no .WAD, only .VIBE
emonotony: @Akaiatana Outside Plato's Cave is Plato's Cave. But what's inside Plato's Cave?
mtvcdm: I should not be comparing your tech to an old Watch+Play game
eid010n: It's a set of images that resemble quake 2, and which in a short window don't change in an entirely disjointed manner from one to another.
ArdCollider:
my neighbor's infant has been hollering like Chris Hemsworth in Thor all week trying to get the last mile on rolling over.
RockPusher: First 2 years of human existence is essentially the bootstrapping process
wildpeaks: it reminds of the enemies in ECHO when they learn to move, learning from the player
Akaiatana: Well, these CEOs are hitting themselves in the face for sure.
richard_ermen: How did humanity ever survive the inability stage?
ghyllnox: The classic "hits self in the face and starts wailing"
emonotony: @richard_ermen Dying. A lot of dying. A lot.
ghyllnox: @emonotony And parents
emonotony: @ghyllnox Yes, but we have a lot of technology now to help parents prevent the dying part.
Laserbeaks_Fury: We are teaching Androids to dream of Electric Sheep
vinewood_og: Yeah they are using it all wrong.
richard_ermen: An interesting thing to say is: Its an amazing approximation, but its like an aproximation made by aliens, without understanding anything beyond surface optical information
bytecaster: These are the brown walls of my youth
emonotony: @Laserbeaks_Fury The joke being that the book is about trying to teach them to not do that.
goombalax: look this torment nexus ain't gonna invent itself
Laserbeaks_Fury: I could see a positive timeline where this somehow becomes the basis of how to teach a machine to think laterally
RockPusher: Inference based solely on how the image changes
Showsni: I like that one of the lines in Microsoft's page is "counting doesn’t always work fantastically". The one thing computers are normally good at!
bytecaster: I would not be as annoyed at these things as cute little experiments, if it wasn't immediately used as an argument that we don't need to pay humans for making art anymore.
DoodlestheGreat: If a video game was made by a cargo cult...
emonotony: If it can start modeling the world around it we've got fascinating data that won't be a billion dollar product.
richard_ermen: @Showsni Well, since LLMs and alike are language models, counting is a thing they're generally pretty bad at in general.
richard_ermen: Again: The future is dumb.
mtvcdm: What if we created things that already exist, but in the most cumbersome, monkeys-typing-Shakespeare way.
vinewood_og: Abuse like this is how you get cylons
RockPusher: It's a very inefficient approach though, even for ML
GapFiller: this is another way to replace people
emonotony: Expensive and complicated people with careers and lives.
Laserbeaks_Fury: oh yeah, someone *will* sell games made by AI
goombalax: we've taught computers to dream so we can sell those as replacements for yours
wildpeaks: trying to guess unwritten rules from what you see, the everyday aspie experience
mtvcdm: Like this is what generative AI is fundamentally. Digital monkeys trying to type Shakespeare.
bytecaster: I cannot wait to have to fix all of this mess when these kinds of systems have become legacy code that nobody understands in about 10 years
MDHWrites: Luckily, everyone keeps finding out that these models aren't making anything you can actually sell.
ghyllnox: You should see some of the stuff on W+P
korvys: AI is not going to *take* a game dev job - But a shortsighted manager would definitely be convinced to *give* a game dev job to AI
emonotony: @wildpeaks Once you figure it out, there's the problem that there's no right answers, it's just improv.
wildpeaks: oh yeah
richard_ermen: @MDHWrites Reminds me of Altman from OpenAI being asked what their goal to make money is and he saying "We're going to ask the (machine god-intelligence) how best to monetize it". Which is....dumb.
emonotony: This material has fascinating properties for purposes that we can't build.
ArdCollider: one of the AI commercials in the Super Bowl generated an ungodly amount of footage to get the actual ad (35 minutes for a 60-second spot, I think?) and, like. we make a ton of stuff making those ads but *it is 99% what you want and the rest is just notes we act on.*
richard_ermen: Isn't war the failure of Brinkmanship?
mtvcdm: War removes the bullshit. You either can fight or you can't.
Voidhawk42: Reality Has a Price
ArdCollider: (I work in VFX. I have survived Super Bowl commercials season. it's ugly but it boils less ocean than AI does.)
ShaneLeeAtk: War doesn't decide who is right, it decided who is left.
mtvcdm: @ArdCollider I think the Coca-Cola Christmas one was like an hour and a half to get like 15 seconds.
MDHWrites: Marathon now has a release date btw
richard_ermen: Why...oh why is the next Marathon an extraction shooter and not a single-player game? What is wrong with bungie?
ArdCollider: @mtvcdm That sounds more like it (I've had a big week and am off the top of my head). it is an unbelievable waste.
RockPusher: People found Flappy Bird very engaging…
RandomTrivia: And the actual Quake II doesn't melt whatever it's running on
vinewood_og: I was going to say thermite
RandomTrivia:

richard_ermen: What ChatGPT does is lower the general quality of works, literal and figuraitevly
wildpeaks: especially with Gamepass training players not to buy games, just expect a slurry of new content
richard_ermen: *figureatively
emonotony: We cannot stop inventing new use cases for AI because the cost of not making a profit using AI are the careers of rich and powerful people.
richard_ermen: figu....damn
Wolfstrike_NL: "I like the part were I make money"
richard_ermen: I mean "bullshit jobs" are an actual thing in economics.
Invitare: it's actually really useful in things like the sciences. It's just less good at the things corporations are trying to force it to be
ProcyonFlynn:
And Humble
ArdCollider:

DoomBringerIL: i always love Cam in theoretical thinking settings.... he really shines there @LoadingReadyRun
GapFiller:
Cameron Lauder known for being Humble
emonotony: @Invitare Really depends on the exact type of AI. This type of image and text generation is very... bad. At everything.
pleonasticTautology: i think this is the problem of so many people just like... subjecting themselves to algorithmic feeds with no care of who or what they are watching, or why
Metric_Furlong: I once saw someone say he was in favour of GenAI because he wanted it to make him Star Wars films he likeds
RubikDarkwill: Creeper World is great
Invitare: @emonotony Actually the image one is also useful. Not, trained on art I mean, but the fundamental AI is being used to crack a bunch of bioscience stuff
vinewood_og: Isn't that what it does now? Sequels and reboots
GapFiller:
Metric_Furlong
mtvcdm: I've held, when a dev team puts *love and care* into a game, even if the game isn't the best, you can always tell they put love and care into it and it makes it that much more enjoyable. You will never replicate that with AI.
TheAwkes: Conflating what science does with AI and what LLMs do with AI is what the LLM makers want you to do to add legitimacy to their product. They're under the same tent because the billionaires have insisted they belong in the same tent.
ArdCollider: the current popular use of "AI" is like the American use of "Christian" to mean "a very narrow band of right-wing evangelical belief. It cuts out "computer vision, machine learning, bioinformatics applications of ML, etc."
emonotony: @Invitare Oh the math sure, but not the image generation.
Laserbeaks_Fury: Big open spaces that aren't curated are just boring
RockPusher: The difference between me playing a sports game to keep my hands busy while listening to a podcast versus analysing every single item in Unpacking for the careful narrative reason for it being there
ArcOfTheConclave: @Invitare Image processing? very useful. image generation? expensive boondogle
ArdCollider: (I do a lot of "do you wanna see my whole exome report? the medical applications people are grifting you to think LLMs might someday do are here now, with ML and big computers and *brilliant scientists.*")
emonotony: @ArdCollider I've been doing AI in the sense of a device that tries to predict what a human wants to do and then doing the opposite for decades but I don't want to call it aI right now.
RockPusher: Watching a show for "entertainment" versus watching a show to "give me something to think about"
Julian_Rogue: It's cargo cult thinking.
ProcyonFlynn: I've heard it phrased as "Just because you can write a program to mathematically create every possible piano composition - doesn't mean anybody would call 99% of them music.
Laserbeaks_Fury: It's Chanese Room
Laserbeaks_Fury: *Chinese
ContingentCat: it's a ship of theseus a bit with the canalized information
Strebenherz: That was great cam
GapFiller: maps are not territories yes
ProcyonFlynn: And yeah - The Chinese Room is the whole computation =/= cognition question.
pleonasticTautology: cam have you ever watched the regular car reviews videos on the pt cruiser and the chevy hhr? they talk about this sort of thing
ArcOfTheConclave: ceci n'est pas une pipe
TheAwkes: Markov chains are charmingly bad in a way that LLMs have never been.
ArdCollider: Macrodata refinement!
GapFiller: tldr following syntactic rules doesnt mean semantic understanding
ArdCollider: to tie off the Severance ref
Akaiatana: Keep Talking and no one plays Quake 2.
RandomTrivia:
That's a lookup table
ContingentCat: oh right, good ol' Searle
Metric_Furlong: mary's room?
Julian_Rogue: cargo cult thinking?
professorpenington: Amy and the black and white room?
professorpenington: *Mary
Julian_Rogue: UI vs UX?
LordZarano: The game FUEL almost completely wore me out on procedural generation (racing game with the biggest fixed game map ever, but it's all procedural with just a few set-pieces added in). Only way I can stand procedural gen now is when the whole world can be used as resources eg Minecraft or Astroneer
RockPusher: Copy of video game made by aliens will likely look like a video game to other aliens
emonotony: @RockPusher Stuffed lions again
GhostValv: oh no
ArcOfTheConclave: barf
Strebenherz: We burn windows down
richard_ermen: Guess I'll switch to Ubuntu
grgriffin3: Well that sent a shiver through my spine
Metric_Furlong: please don't speak that into existence
RockPusher: arguably notepad has already gone away
wildpeaks: oh a related note, Recall is coming back to Windows
RockPusher: modern notepad is not my notepad
ProcyonFlynn: hate to tell you ... but notepad has copilot integration now too
ArdCollider: raise your hand and don't break your NDA if your office now has a KPI for your use of whatever LLM product they either created and own or are blowing capex on.
Laserbeaks_Fury: It would be very Bad ++
richard_ermen: @wildpeaks Why? I thought they realized the security problems were paramount
vinewood_og: Open rebellion if they take my notepad
Julian_Rogue: It's done a few good things in the medical field i'm happy about
ArcOfTheConclave: there is so much cool useful profitable AI stuff. this is not that.
ArdCollider: (if you are mourning Val Kilmer *and* are a tech cynic, go watch Real Genius, it will affirm you on both counts)
RockPusher: It's the Star Trek history problem of how did they go from our world to the post-scarcity Federation…
TheMerricat: "AI is so cool, why do we keep picking the shitty thing to do with it?!"
bytecaster: As usual the money ghouls will ruin any cool thing.
RockPusher: Humanities history between now and utopia in Trek is Not A Good Time™
ContingentCat: our old rival Capitalism ruining everything again
RockPusher: *Humanity's
ArdCollider: the first time I saw "in silico" in a journal article was exciting! this other stuff is unethical harm.
Marvoleath: NFT was also a technology that had some actual use, but ppl decided to use it for "find the bigger idiot" scams
LathosTiran: borderlands cell binding minigame
Julian_Rogue: Like most/all tools
bytecaster: Capitalism will just never ever consider externalities that aren't money.
ContingentCat: lol
ghyllnox: Automation has not resulted in the dissolution of capitalism so far
silenceaux: Bounties for creating high quality inputs for learning models...?
bytecaster: I am convinced that business people will never believe that people would make things without getting paid because they wouldn't, even though there is plenty of evidence that people will want to create things anyway.
RandomTrivia: As ever, we know that all the resources (monetary or otherwise) that are "saved" by use of automation and "AI" will not, in fact, be distributed equally among humanity
pleonasticTautology: and nelly would know
TheMerricat:
Thought Cameron was about to bring up Leah Brahms
ghyllnox: There's also the problem with ChatGPT that you can't/couldn't *not* give permission for your works to be used for training
red_shoes_jeff: He once held a conversation with Troi USING the trombone.
TheAinMAP:

goombalax: number one trombone pilot of the format
RandomTrivia: Several angry viola players down in Engineering
ArdCollider:

Julian_Rogue: I kinda wanted to make a max headroom vtuber
GapFiller: that stutter
RockPusher: That is an interesting assignment…
bytecaster: The data isn't tagged that way, so the model might not encode that information
RockPusher: Dunk on Reagan!!!
ArdCollider: (max headroom: 1984.)
Julian_Rogue: knew him as taggard on eureka
Laserbeaks_Fury: In make-up designed to *look* like CG
vinewood_og: And Taggart on Eureka!
RockPusher: Andy may have met him…
RockPusher: Can't remember if he was still on Eureka when Andy was on
GapFiller: phun phact Max Headroom actor Matt Frewer was also in Monty Python Meaning of Life
wildpeaks: Andy is a national treasure
TheMerricat:
Here Paul was worried they wouldn't have 3 hours of talk in them
silenceaux: Real Money Trading stuff?
Strebenherz: Maybe Roblox thinks if they point hard enough at 'em, people'll forget about Roblox's laundry list
Laserbeaks_Fury: I would be kinda scared to re-watch the Max Headroom Show: I'm afraid of how prescient it might actually become. Like I remember that in the show, elections votes were tied to channel viewership
Laserbeaks_Fury: And like it was against the law to turn off your TV
Akaiatana: A contract presented by your hostage takers is not binding.
ProcyonFlynn: #StopKillingGames and such.
Laserbeaks_Fury: I know you cannot bequeath your Steam account to an estate
RockPusher: also it varies by jurisdiction
Marvoleath: That's why with most online services you do not actually own anything, like with Steam - you just paid for access
RandomTrivia:

RockPusher:
I know a video game when I see it!
Akaiatana: Fortnite is like pron, you know it when you see it. Unless it's Quake 2.
silenceaux: "We don't know what a video game is, exactly, but we know Fortnite is one of them"
goombalax: rogue trader maybeee

Laserbeaks_Fury: It's an Italian word, yes?
GapFiller: words can be pronounced in multiple dfft ways Cam

GhostValv: wowie

wildpeaks:

richard_ermen: People are weirdly mad about a game changing a lot in early access.
bytecaster: The community lost their shit as usual.
Marvoleath:
Americans pronounce 95% loan words wrong and then have the adaucity to 'correct' ppl saying them accurately
Lord_Hosk: People weren't following.... the Path of Exile
DoodlestheGreat: Did you guys see the POE clone they had on "Watch & Play" this week? Gruesome.
bytecaster: I don't know, my poison archer did fine. But I think the new class especially was just a bad match both with what most ARPG players want and felt underpowered.
Juliamon: that clone was amazing (in all the wrong ways)
silenceaux: I'm a fan of a rivalling game in the genre. The community space has been swamped with people bemoaning at length their former lover. And I am so tired of hearing about these gamers and their suddenly shitty ex.
DoodlestheGreat: @Juliamon Oh yes, THAT was a cargo cult of a video game.
bytecaster: @silenceaux The triablism gets on my nerve, they are both good games (I assume LE), just play more than one game people.
silenceaux: @bytecaster You are correct, I'm just trying to avoid tribalism. And it really is a "Please, read another book" moment
Juliamon: community needs to be reminded of the two cakes rule
Juliamon: one cake may be "better" than the other but you still have two cakes
wildpeaks: ha I hesitated to mention two cakes, feared the ref might be too obscure
Julian_Rogue: Lag
Scy_Anide: I've heard this called writer vs reader feedback. Readers tell you that something is wrong (common). Writers tell you how to fix a problem (rare).

constablecrab: I mean, you can already buy progress on the existing battlepass.
constablecrab: Nope, people go to 3rd party sites for rent.
UraharaSci: @themerricat and maybe make it so the currency in the Battlepass doesn’t give you enough currency to get any items people want
ArdCollider: it went live in D3 and then it went away.
bytecaster: Diablo 3 had a terrible launch
bytecaster: The error code became a meme
ArdCollider: (my officemate, hilariously, used the RMT to make back what he spent on the game and then uninstalled it.)
silenceaux: D3 launched with it, and went away rather quickly.
Laserbeaks_Fury: Even WoW courted a RL Auction House by creating those tokens you could sell
constablecrab: It was near impossible to find good items for yourself instead of buying them.
bytecaster: Arguably most people didn't play D3 on release day
bytecaster: Even if they wanted to
Marvoleath: It skipped the step of hiring an underpaid kid from far away country to grind your in-game currency
pleonasticTautology: can i ask something that may sound like a stupid question
definenull: Ooh uranium pants
constablecrab: Oh yeah, the stinky pants.
pleonasticTautology: when did games start having "seasons"/"season passes"? i understand the *why* (money, capitalism, etc), but like. it feels like most of the games i play never had them and then suddenly the rest of the landscape did?
GhostValv:
obviously
Seagulyus: @pleonasticTautology Fortnite had the first IIRC?
constablecrab: Pox Faulds?
Seagulyus: or, at least, Fortnite popularized it
Seagulyus: oh it was DOTA2
pleonasticTautology: ahaaa
goombalax: that comic is a classic
itomeshi: That was a classic PA strip
pleonasticTautology: yeah i just. i think the first game i played with a "season" structure is splatoon 3?

Laserbeaks_Fury: CHANGE YOUR UNDERWEAR!
definenull: OK so I wasn't far off from calling it radioactive
constablecrab: To be fair, set items in D3 give you tens of thousands of percent damage bonuses.
bytecaster: Diablo 2 had economy resets right?
silenceaux: I think the % is a range from 450-550%
Laserbeaks_Fury: "And give back %8 to honor the Hebrew God, whose Ark this is..."
bytecaster: It's about resetting the ingame economy and release new content as an event
itomeshi: I mean, we can argue they're an evolution of the yearly sports game.
Marvoleath: I believe it started with ranked games in MOBAs
silenceaux: Or many months of in-game wealth accumulation
RandomTrivia: WoW Expansions are sort of like DLC
silenceaux: @itomeshi Love this argument actually, and had not heard it before.
itomeshi: CSGO and Overwatch were had seasons in 2016
Kazman20a: I think seasons are sort of an newer version of progresion servers
Laserbeaks_Fury: I remember skipping straight to Zangarmarsh because Hellfire Penninsula was unplayable at launch
goombalax: balance updates
TheMerricat: The first game that ever had a season pass according to Wikipedia was LA Noire, which would not have had anything close to this sort of season
itomeshi: @RandomTrivia Oh, absolutely. A combination of 'new content + progression reset + optional scoreboard reset due to rebalance' seems like a useful season definition
frnknstn: When your BBS Admin went home from University for the holidays, that was the Winter season
pleonasticTautology: i dunno, i think i like expansions and stuff more than season pass stuff? like. a ffxiv xpac lasts at LEAST 2 years and also that content stays around. meanwhile, in destiny 2, i bought xpacs that the game actively fought against me on playing! like. i'm more fine paying for a dlc or an xpac because that remains A Single Cost
pleonasticTautology: but a season pass means it's like. yearly, half-yearly, quarterly...
Marvoleath: According to Wikipedia: "One of the first season passes in video games was used by Rockstar Games with L.A. Noire in 2011.[4][5] Later the same month, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment continued the trend with Mortal Kombat"
UraharaSci: the variable dropping of ranks are more for new players so when a season resets you don’t get a brand new player against the top 100 players
Voidhawk42: An entire new game?
TheMerricat: Oh dear....
definenull: Oh
constablecrab: The dream!

LordZarano: Best I've come up with so far for describing interacting with the AI game thing "Real Quake 2 has inputs that cause the character to look down. If you make those same inputs into the AI model it will cause the model to start generating images of floor. Then when you make inputs that would cause Quake 2 to look up, the images of room that the model generates will have no relation to the images from before it started generating images of floor"
