GapFiller: something specific abt the War Thunder community
RockPusher: GapFiller I would posit it's just a numbers thing - a critical mass of military hardware nerds who have access to materials with similar dispositions about things being wrong all in one place

mtvcdm: I think it's crossed from accidental to increasingly something you actively try to invoke as a matter of spycraft.
RockPusher: and we hear about it more reliably when it happens now *because* it is memetic that it happens
GapFiller: RockPusher might be that simple yeh but its the reoccurring nature of it that gets me
Juliamon: People will leak dumb shit in EVERY fandom, this one just happens to have sensitive government information to leak
GapFiller: Juliamon thats the other thing
Juliamon: consider how many leaks WotC has to deal with in any given year
mtvcdm: If you know it's this easy to get someone to leak military secrets, a government intelligence agency is going to put someone on that to try and force it out of others.
EvilBadman: you should eat it
KaleidoscopeMind: no that sandwich is a forbidden idea
incslayer: @mtvcdm remember the old adage "never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity"
mtvcdm: I hear there's walnuts
KaleidoscopeMind: do not think about the sandwich
RockPusher: that's why they are forbidden - they are covered in sandwich
Snowcookies: Someone on Discord mentioned that the public data on these vehicles often omit stuff, and WarThunder devs use public info which ppl who have insider info might think badly
GapFiller: Juliamon wanna say surely Sensitive Government Info is a dfft tier to WotC but otoh we all know these are the kinda nerds who dont recognise that difference
EvilBadman: how many steps is that sandwhich
BusTed:

RockPusher:
gotta get that
mtvcdm: Sometimes a sandwich is fruit and cake
DeM0nFiRe: Alternate Reality Gyro
RockPusher:

kingandcommoner: Is the ham clverly sliced so stacking it into a sandwich makes a qr code?
Juliamon: GapFiller yeah leakers are desperate to prove a thing right/wrong purely for the sake of it, not because of its level of importance
GapFiller:
!?
incslayer: is a ham slam like a timtam slam?
GapFiller:
o7
EvilBadman: but it's sonic's 30th anniversary
KaleidoscopeMind: we should see a doctor about that
mtvcdm: @Juliamon And that's spycraft: find out someone's motivations and press on them until they give you what you want.
hyalopterous: Alas, Beej
mtvcdm: Did you know the War Thunder loops?
hyalopterous: It's that time again
7gorobei: there was a video that went over every WT 'leak' up to that date. 99% of it was easily searchable/findable on the internet. the violations are more letter of the law than actual secrets that china/rus/iran didnt know about.
GapFiller:
the evergreener for me is Raytheon claiming they are NOT factoring War Thunder into their security clearance background checks
TheMerricat:
I can't wait till people start leaking Warframe secrets.
SocraticMethod: @GapFiller It's mostly because a) devs go for "realism" so having a document to back it up improves the argument b) people aren't fully up on what infosec so they think it's available on the internet it's fair game c) Gaijin is a Russian company and they try to follow the infosec regulations so they remove any import restricted information, which brings me to point
MWGNZ: not a fresh leak
SocraticMethod: @SocraticMethod d) vast majority of the "leaks" aren't leaks but breach of export regulations and it was memed into "Warthunder players keep leaking classified info !!!
Juliamon: Fresh for War Thunder, not for the internet at large
RockPusher: Documents become leaked…
SocraticMethod: Like, I think there was 2 actual leaks and they were un-redaction of parts of otherwise available documents
gnyrinn: Make sure your leeks are fresh. Otherwise your quiche will not turn out right.
mtvcdm: Gary Gygax solved this problem by introducing a dragon
mtvcdm: Gygax was literally like, go ahead, try and argue the parameters of a dragon, let's hear it
SocraticMethod: I'm 100% sure similar things happens in DCS but no-one cares about it so it gets forgotten
incslayer: yea only if they are made in the harrier region of france otherwise they are just sparkling vtols
MWGNZ: war thunder even explicitly calls this out in their 'dont leak classified docs' policy
mtvcdm: Is that a thread title or a Kingdom Hearts sequel
KaleidoscopeMind: what was the trainer variant's starter?
gnyrinn: @MWGNZ Imagine running a forum and having to explicitly state that in your TOS.
mtvcdm: pls buff harrier jet
RockPusher: The Harrier is a fantastic machine
RockPusher: Humans are just bad at operating complex machines
GapFiller:
thought occurs theres prob a significant overlap between War Thunder nerd and Wikipedia Editor nerd
mtvcdm: Man, remember when someone tried to sue Pepsi to give them a Harrier in the Pepsi Stuff campaign?
TheMerricat:
@RockPusher And the military is famous for always ensuring that appropriately qualified individuals are always assigned to appropriate equipment.
Izandai: Cutting maintenance rarely has immediate consequences, especially if you do it a little at a time, so it always feels like you can get away with it.
TheAinMAP: I think the movie "True Lies" heavily features a harrier jet.
SocraticMethod: @mtvcdm I would take a fighter jet. Even if was a harrier.
RubikDarkwill: "If you don't schedule maintenance, the machine will schedule maintenance for you"
mtvcdm: If they're doing it for the meme that's not less dumb
RockPusher: "Given his extensive experience with the craft, investigators decided that the presence of his fiancé on [the ship] somehow caused the crash."
gnyrinn: @mtvcdm I just remember the Pepsi ad campaign that was so badly thought out that they accidentally promised Harrier jets to basically everyone.
RockPusher: good old fashioned machismo
KaleidoscopeMind: if it was for the meme, someone would have made up fake restricted documents to "leak"
mtvcdm: @gnyrinn I do still have the wallet I got from that campaign though. It's held up this long and still doing fine. It's a good wallet.
TheMerricat:
The 4d chess move is leaking info on weapon platforms you want nerfed because if the devs know about it's capabilities, they cant code them in.
7gorobei: as for why they put this stuff in the WT forum: during the alpha/beta the game was 1930-1950 planes. gaijin had all kinds of errors in stats and the playerbase provided documentation from publicly released data. the devs started a policy if you could provide 2 to 3 documented sources they would change the stats/gamemodel. the problem came when they kept adding more modern vehicles. eventually they caught up to present day classified tech or smaller nations using last gen tech.
RockPusher: Roblox continued existence saddens me
GapFiller: from War Thunder to Roblox is one of those Sublime Ridiculous story transitions
SocraticMethod: @KaleidoscopeMind Wouldn't have to be made up, could be copied from internet. There is tons of export restricted/improperly exposed documents floating around in milsim circles
GapFiller: perhaps w/ the Sonic 30th story was the Ludicrous third beat transition
kingandcommoner: Are you telling me saying "in Minecraft" isn't going to be able to fool the nsa again?
TheMerricat: Note chat, appending "in Minecraft" to your statements does NOT shield you from being arrested and charged for crime.
Thefluffiestguineapig: @TheMerricat As it shouldn't
RockPusher: *credible* threat
gnyrinn: Any game other than Roblox will also occasionally get a news story like "This bit of silly but harmless whimsy happened in/near <GAME>"

ArcOfTheConclave: It was a heated gamer moment
SocraticMethod: "Dig up, stupid!"

GapFiller: this makes me wonder if LRR has ever done anything strictly for themselves only

TehAmelie: ha, Jack Black looked like a teen at 23 and in this thirties he looked like someone in his thirties who would play a teenager on TV and then with a beard he started looking 60
GapFiller: Tony Hawk is 57 per a quick search
TheMerricat: Chat, can you imagine in 30 years folks having nostalgia for the last three Star Wars movies, Picard, and Section 31?
GapFiller: which is acutally surprising ly old
TehAmelie: @GapFiller imagine how old his knees are
GapFiller: late fifties to early forties late thirites feels long enough to be a gengap
Thefluffiestguineapig: @TehAmelie Much younger
ArcOfTheConclave: a bunch of the deep cuts are to entertain the child's parents when they a watching kids movies
mister_nibbles: fun fact, Bugs Bunny is responsible for Nimrod being an insult. In the original cartoon he used it about Elmer Fudd referencing a biblical figure that was a legendary hunter, it wasn't intended to be an insult at all.
Izandai: Well, it was, because he was making the comparison sarcastically.
Thefluffiestguineapig: Tony Hawk has had an enormous number of joints replaced IIRC
TehAmelie: that figures
mtvcdm: How many people knew who Nimrod was
7gorobei: the tony hawk of theseus?
gnyrinn: One Bugs Bunny cartoon was just about Wagnerian opera, so yeah - stuff your cartoons full of references that the kiddies won't get(at first).
EvilBadman: they sure had a gundam
GapFiller: mtvcdm he IS a Biblical figure
hyalopterous: Nicki Manaj
Izandai: @mtvcdm Not enough for it to not take root in the cultural consciousness as a generic insult.
hyalopterous: or however yu spell it
EvilBadman:
I'm building a COD or FORT this or that
TehAmelie: i learned of Nimrod from reading X-Men
mtvcdm: @GapFiller There's lots of biblical figures and some are a heck of a lot less famous than others
CaptainSpam: Are Beavis and Butthead just skins, or do they get a campaign?
TehAmelie: what is this "Beegs Buny"
artdecosunburn: @TheMerricat Every time people muse about new media nostalgia, I point out that in 40 years a silver-haired Miley Cyrus will be feted at the Kennedy Center Honors the way Aretha Franklin or Barbara Streisand would have in their 70s.
Marvoleath: "pay to lose"
TheMerricat: Pay to lose?
EvilBadman: @TheMerricat That's gambling
Thefluffiestguineapig: @7gorobei Basically, I know he had to have his femur and elbow "surgically realigned" which is so vague and also meaningless
Izandai: @TheMerricat Two thirds of one of these things is not like the other.
BusTed: They were shorts first, right?
LordZarano: Words changing to the opposite meaning due to being used sarcastically has been a long tradition in many languages
artdecosunburn: @mtvcdm Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendago?
TehAmelie: all teenagers must discover Beavis & Butthead
TheMerricat: @lordzarano literally.
ButButTheJesus: We had the movie
CaptainSpam: They also riff on music videos.
mtvcdm: They walk around town doing dumb stuff
artdecosunburn: Framing device.
Firewhiskers: They would walk around town and get in adventures
mtvcdm: Daria was a spinoff and was far more intelligent
EvilBadman: they got in dumb "slice of life" adventures
BusTed: there was loose narrative
hyalopterous: King of the Hill too
GapFiller: dunno the NA situation but over here it being on MTV (which in the nineties was strictly a Sky channel) limited its audience
ButButTheJesus: Weren't they the origin of Hank Hill from king of the hill?
Firewhiskers: The first Beavis and Butthead short was called Frog Baseball and was on the indie film scene for a while
GapFiller: like many knew abt Beavis & butthead but few actually watched it at the time
GapFiller: bit like early Simpsons ect in that respect
Izandai: All I've seen of Beavis and Butthead is Drill Sergeant Sex Ed.
hyalopterous: Simpsons started on the Tracy Ullman show
artdecosunburn: Well, given the Supreme Court will likely strip union protections over the next year, we should take labor wins where we can.
Thefluffiestguineapig: A lot of what is now classic animation started as side projects on other bigger now forgotten shows
Firewhiskers: Who else misses The Critic?
GapFiller: Firewhiskers IT STINKS!
artdecosunburn: @Firewhiskers Great show.
TheMerricat: So internet went down just as I was typing up a factoid. Daria _was_ a spinoff. King of the Hill wasn't. They originally floated the idea that they would be neighbors, but decided not to tie the two worlds together.
GapFiller: CHANNEL WHEELER!
RockPusher:

artdecosunburn: @TheMerricat I think they're all in the Tommy Westphall universe.
Thefluffiestguineapig: @artdecosunburn For me it will take longer for it to get to that point because they can't take that step without cases to pick from and I didn't see anything on the docket for their next session in that vein

Thefluffiestguineapig: @RockPusher I believe in it very strongly

whatthebus: Todd Macfarlane in shambles
kingandcommoner: Are you saying my Spawn collection isn't valuable anmore?
mtvcdm: Edgy in the 90's meant never using capital letters to spell anything
Thefluffiestguineapig: @whatthebus Sorry, what?
Thefluffiestguineapig: Why is Todd MacFarlane mad now?
GapFiller: mtvcdm dont forgot extreme kool letterz lrc
whatthebus: @Thefluffiestguineapig because he was the cool and edgy comics guy in the 90s
SocraticMethod: It's when holding one-handed and the fingers hit the main body. It happens to some, not to others
RockPusher:
GapFiller but the cool 'S' is eternal, right?
Firewhiskers: @mtvcdm Edgy in the 90s was when Nintendo advertised the N64 with a Butthole Surfers song
mtvcdm: Edgy in the 90's meant naming your band the Butthole Surfers
GapFiller: mtvcdm they were an eighties band tho
Thefluffiestguineapig: @whatthebus Ah, gotcha, I just saw the Spawn comment after and brain caught up
EvilBadman: "I'm a surfer!"
TheMerricat:
And now people name their band Tropical F***storm.
GapFiller: otoh they only 'made it' in the nineties tbf
TehAmelie: i always liked The Buzzcocks

TheDevil_Risen: hahaha
MWGNZ: thats a good pr statement tbh
mister_nibbles: i mean... it would be nice if they had stepped up the first time, but at least they only took one round of backlash to get their heads on straight
ArcOfTheConclave: that was a good apology
Thefluffiestguineapig: That's better than 90% of pr statements
RockPusher: indeed, that is a good piece of damage control
Tiber727: It sounds like a human wrote it rather than a robot from planet PR.

TheDevil_Risen: ahhh samsung, causing issues again
SocraticMethod: "Not removable" is ... not strictly true

TheMerricat: They killed off all their CYOA movies
Thefluffiestguineapig: But why thoooooo

KaleidoscopeMind: job title: "Median employee"
Wicker_Guide: Now I want to know who this mysterious 'median employee" is

SocraticMethod: @SocraticMethod f.e. if dataset had "1 1 1 1 2 2 3 3 3" the mode is 1
gnyrinn: A drop in nominal terms of the median salary!? That's depressing and infuriating in equal measure.
ProcyonFlynn: @Angreed66 Accurate? Better and "capitalist" in the same sentence just seems wrong.
BusTed: Does it mean that person has no upward movement?
Wicker_Guide: that they're using median is, I think, good. That they literally picked a "median employee" somehow suggests to me they somehow messed it up
