SnackPak_: I'd read that light novel
MenomeAlice: Almost missed the first hour of this stream thanks to wacky differences in DST. Happens every year, yet I always get caught out for a fortnight.
TXC2: it's 3 weeks this time round
TXC2: Here we GO!
TXC2: Hello Cameron
MalFnord: wait no I'm not prepared!
TXC2: Big same there Cameron
SnackPak_: also eepy
iris_of_ether: Hi Eepy, I'm Dad
lightfut: Greetings mr eepy
Juliamon: MenomeAlice Good news, it'll only be once a year now
MenomeAlice: I have had to futilely defend Myst on Justin McElroy's stream this week
TheMerricat: Also eepy
Gekyouryuu: Verr E. Eepy, you say?
taliesinskye: Working, but it's good to hear you.
kingandcommoner: You shouldn't read the Readers Digest then
DoodlestheGreat: Yeah. not enough tums to deal with it all.
edolnx: How was Marathon?
TXC2:
the 90's are back, but only the bad parts
Yoshi_Gal: Debating if awake time or more sleep time
iris_of_ether: I did have a nice Tuesday though so I got that going
Singenmeister: I ALSO LIKE LIKING GAMES
taliesinskye: I buy packs of lens cleaning cloths, they make nice ones for cleaning camera lenses I get in big boxes because I lose them.
DoodlestheGreat: Not me. Nice to hear you're having fun.
kingandcommoner: Ignoring your problems doesnt make them go away, but that's just one more problem to ignore
edolnx: Awesome! Glad to hear you like it!
Gekyouryuu: Is the battle pass still a lootable item, or was that a bug?
ArtDecoSunburn: @kingandcommoner How else am I supposed to accumulate gentle puns based on observations by middle class professionals, appended to abridgements of long books about fishing?
edolnx: That is neat
Nigouki: was James ever on Talking Sim? D:
iris_of_ether: Amazing
niccus: how many kilometers has your marathon been

edolnx: Awesome game Studio logo
public_key_reveal_party: Yes, it's good
TXC2: I am aware of it
Mushbie: ohh yeah that is a good podcast
Singenmeister: I should with how often people reference it
tidehollowcat: I have recently started getting into it
lightfut: Sad how many bastards there are to cover
MalFnord: Not in a while, but I've indulged
iris_of_ether: Oh, so a friend went to a weekly dinner & movie event at a local pub. Movie was "Wag the Dog". Apparently a pair of 90-somethings got progressively more uncomfortable, then angry, then walked out at the movie went on lol
Nigouki: I've listened to a few eps, but it just seems the bastards are everpresent in the news too and it gets tiresome...
JohneyS: BTB is great. The news made me think of those episodes as well.
TXC2: like how the password was 00000 for DECADES
memnus: BtB is one of the few podcasts that just give me too much whiplash from the ads
taliesinskye: Courier would be thematic but it's also kind of bad.
ArtDecoSunburn: Hey, don't leave out Canada. NORAD wouldn't be a be able to do what it does without Canada.
iris_of_ether: Sure is
taliesinskye: Yes, because of old typewriters.
ArtDecoSunburn: And ITT teletypes.
taliesinskye: Because they still used old typewriters for quite a while
public_key_reveal_party: I am also very tired
TXC2: "uniformity with forms" is grammatically correct, you're fine Cameron
goombalax: "may"

Nigouki: this is a very stabbable coworker
TXC2: depends were the strike is

JadedCynic: I mean, I'm not crazy about the news in general, but....
SnackPak_: began?
kingandcommoner: No, my 2 inch think plywood desk will save me
MalFnord: Depends on where you are in the blast radius
JadedCynic: Mechancical voice: "Prepare to be crushed int-"
niccus: becoming physics
TXC2: actual vaporised
ArtDecoSunburn: @kingandcommoner Hey, gotta get in that duck and cover training.
Singenmeister: That level of force where your body ceases to be biology and becomes physics
Gekyouryuu: *sky lights up brighter than the sun* "ruh-r-"
TXC2: depends on the bomb size
public_key_reveal_party: I mean, more likely in that case, the alarm would be more "huh what was" before the thought gets cut off
JohneyS: Is that the ""vape nation" that kids are always going on about?
JadedCynic: the problem with a Hot War exchange is NOT being inside those range rings...
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 And the composition of the payload.
Nigouki: all I remember is Tsar Bomb was gonna 3rd Degree you ~3 miles away
e_bloc: I had an english teacher named chuck herbert
Kata_The_Cat: Hardened semen... that hurts to think about.
DoodlestheGreat: You are a cancer cell, mister
public_key_reveal_party: I looked away from the screen for that line of dialogue so cam's response threw me there
MalFnord: ew
taliesinskye: I knew a lawyer who specialized in representing sailors. He advertised his firm number on condoms he handed out. He knew exactly how hardened seamen could get.
TXC2: Hardened semen: for when kidney stones just aren't punishing enough
RandomTrivia:
Hi friends!
TXC2: hello RandomTrivia welcome

ArtDecoSunburn: This is some wonky switchboarding.
JadedCynic: okay, seems easy enough...
JadedCynic:
(inB4 'this isn't how electricity works"
)
TXC2:
good old slow electricity
ArtDecoSunburn: @JadedCynic Nor telephony, circa 1962.
Kata_The_Cat: Technically if you could swap wires at the speed of light, this is how electricity works.
JadedCynic: AH, yes, that's the trick!
e_bloc: can i actually get a girthier wire
JadedCynic:

TXC2:
Kata_The_Cat I think you would have to move the wires faster then the speed of light
e_bloc: yeah, I want to talk to two ghosts /at the same time/
ArtDecoSunburn: Actually, I don't think direct marketing sales calls took off until the 1970s. Required creation of more advanced databases and direct dialing.
JadedCynic: OH!
JadedCynic: um....
Nigouki: gdi, it is LBJ we have to deal with
TXC2: my Gods man, use the NATO phonetic alphabet
JadedCynic: wow, they trace faster than I'd think they could...
JadedCynic: wait, wat?
MalFnord: That escalated quickly
JadedCynic: studio has a great logo BTW
TXC2: indeed JFK, but LBJ was the vice president at that time
JadedCynic: yeah, they're saying 'lyndon' a lot...I'm thinking post...um, '53?
ArtDecoSunburn: For just over another year.
JadedCynic: that's a nice touche
Kentosaurus: ooh the actual click and drag rotary action
JadedCynic: recorded Ben Franklin....'wisdom'?
Nigouki: can we tell Franklin that in the future we'll have treatment for all hit STIs?
e_bloc: brother to create the french milf you gotta create the universe first
JadedCynic: yeah, "SpaceWar!" is about this old...
Gekyouryuu: Noted coffee and sex enthusiast invents French Mating Press
ArtDecoSunburn: As an actual historian of 1960s computers for my job, I find this highly amusing.
ArtDecoSunburn: Nary a punch card to be seen?
goombalax: Ben Franklin: "So what if we sort of 'Saved' an hour of daylight by-" SHUT UP AND EAT YOUR MILF BEN

Kentosaurus: i remember that computer sound from carmen sandiego games
Nigouki: at least our world map has a New Zealond, despite them being unfriendly to hosting out nukes
kusinohki: missed the setup but heard a bunch of banjo kazooie speak...
ArtDecoSunburn: Is the "serial" misspelling supposed to be like finding hidden messages in "Three Days of the Condor" or "Rubicon" ?
e_bloc: still doing better than AI would
JadedCynic:
@ArtDecoSunburn so, when should we send an ambulance for the inevitable
stroke?
TXC2: kusinohki we're runing a phone switchboard in the whitehouse in 1962
e_bloc: thats amazing
JadedCynic: yup
JadedCynic: 'popular' numbers were LOW, fewer pulses
e_bloc: maryland, 410
e_bloc: woof
JadedCynic: Newfoundland, Seven ZERO NINE (26)
TXC2: was it not done East to west?
ArtDecoSunburn: One problem a lot of pop culture has is mistaking 1980s computer technologies for earlier decades.
DrLigmaPhD: 480? 22 is pretty out there
BlindProphet32: Heck yeah E_block
e_bloc: at first I was like yeah410 thats the same as new york then oh no
FauksStarling: Central California, 209. I guess it was pretty boonie
Singenmeister: Oh I thought you mean American codes. Mine would be in 40s since we have 5 digits
Nigouki: this is IT phishing us
ArtDecoSunburn: Also, most direct dialing doesn't really kick in until the 1970s. Still mostly switchboards and exchanges.
JadedCynic: @Nigouki 'IT' back then was a teenager with a wire-stripper...
ArtDecoSunburn: Punch cards. Yes.
ArtDecoSunburn: Both.
TXC2:
this was the 60's, IT was black women
kusinohki: only thing I remember about switchboards is don't say anything you don't want the operator to hear. they're most likely listening in.
Nigouki: oof
SymphonySolstice: lmao
e_bloc: my father used punch cards in the military and explained punch cards to me many times. . . . I dont know that I ever understood
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 Human computers.
e_bloc: lol
RandomTrivia:

TXC2: ArtDecoSunburn indeed
JadedCynic: people are bad at rememmbering things; this is why we need historians
e_bloc: I mean it was a 1980s cell phone produced in 2000
JadedCynic: "one who computes"
Getter404: To this day the concept of old-style phone switchboards makes me uneasy on a primal level
TXC2: to compute is an act
e_bloc: wait thats me
maclaglen: 1980s cellphones were the size and weight of a brick
DrLigmaPhD: Do you ever thing society would be better off if we capped cell phone technology at Blackberries?
ArtDecoSunburn: (Sigh) As someone typing this on a blackberry while I watch this stream, I shudder at the ad, Cameron.
kusinohki: manual adding machine that had the giant pull lever...
TXC2: DrLigmaPhD the matrix saying that society peaked in 1999 gets truer every year
JadedCynic:
again 'people are bad a remembering things from the past; this is why we need historians' - and this is why I like and appreciate people like @ArtDecoSunburn
ArtDecoSunburn: A great book on this is Nathan Ensmenger's "When the Computer Boys Took Over," which explains the rise of the modern "IT guy" as a concept. Happens during the sixties when male systems analysts push out women programmers.
ArtDecoSunburn: Now that's LBJ.
equin0xparad0x: Question: if you could dispense any 5 liquids one from each finger, what liquids on which fingers would you pick?
kingandcommoner: Why is Cheato here and not in Banjo Kazooie?
Vinewood_OG: Insert dress pants recording .wav
JadedCynic: LBJ is pretty on the mark, JFK, not as much (visually; this apparently tracks from actual behaviour)
Mushbie: water is basic but universally useful
ArtDecoSunburn: @JadedCynic You're too kind. We just appreciate people showing an interest in the past.
Strebenherz: Did this become lbj and jfk slash fic
goombalax: is there a biological or psychological cost to dispense these liquids
e_bloc: malort, all 5 but increasely pure
DrLigmaPhD: Do they have to be liquid at room temp?
e_bloc: I would also accept piss
JadedCynic:
oooh, does the thumb also shoot off champagne corks?
ArtDecoSunburn: I know what LBJ would choose to dispense from his fingers. One would be bourbon, one branch water, one soda, and the other two unmentionable.
TXC2: no WD-40 ?
maclaglen: Malort and piss are the same thing
Nigouki: ring finger sprays out Sonic rings
kusinohki: "whick finger is the opium finger??"
e_bloc: @maclaglen I try not to drink malort
Vinewood_OG: Some sort of solvent anyway
Singenmeister: It's the blue cheese of liquors
e_bloc: I think it was famously described as tasting like 'pencil shavings and sadness'
gualdhar: just tuning in here, is that LBJ?
Nigouki: I do not want to know who decided to taste a band-aid just to know...
ArtDecoSunburn: @goombalax If you could dispense crude petroleum, could recoup that cost.
iris_of_ether: Water, lotion, isopropyl?
kingandcommoner: Something that can get through handcuffs
e_bloc: its more likely you would be the victim of a drone strike
LordZarano: Breastmilk, because it is known to be safe for humans to emit breastmilk
kingandcommoner: just in case
TXC2: LordZarano kind of vital that we do really
Vinewood_OG: George Lucas is laughing his ass off somewhere
kusinohki: I was half expecting something useful on it's own, but does something weird when combined with a 2nd finger...
e_bloc: never be exceptional kids
e_bloc: above average is better
JadedCynic: Yo, Nicky - got a hot one from J-man; you in?
kingandcommoner: Can it be a ficitional liquid? Can I emit water from the fountain of youth or some kind of programmable grey goo?
ArtDecoSunburn: It was the Cuban Missile Crisis communication issues that led to the creation of the Moscow-DC hotline late in 1962. The original is on display downstairs from my office.
Juliamon: imagine having a holy water finger
LRRbot:

ArtDecoSunburn: They had Russian translators on hotbed rotation.
e_bloc: temporarily
Strebenherz: It's calming in an odd way yeah
e_bloc: essentially dr. strangelove
JadedCynic: yeah, THAT was the apex of security compared to how we did before
DrLigmaPhD: Now I gotta watch War Games again
e_bloc: I only drink pure water mandrake
Mushbie: "fun" fact: Canada had US AIR-2 Genie, air-to-air 1.5kt nuclear rockets
JadedCynic:
when do the party lines come in?
ArtDecoSunburn: Truman was very smart to establish the Atomic Energy Commission, which established precedent for constant civilian control of nuclear weapons. Even today the US theoretically has a civilian energy secretary who monitors the nukes.
e_bloc: I think learning that nuclear depth charges was something they produced was the line for me
ArtDecoSunburn: @JadedCynic I'm sure the KGB is listening in this game.
TXC2:
e_bloc we were gonna make a plane run off a nuclear reactor
e_bloc: @TXC2 its a goddamn miracle any of us are alive
TXC2: e_bloc yeap
DrLigmaPhD: The most beloved boy!
ArtDecoSunburn: I was invite out to see today's version of the "hotline" a few years ago. Giant satellite relay stations at Ft. Detrick, Maryland. The US and Russians now send encrypted text mesages.
e_bloc: please, eastern bloc is my father's name
TXC2: I am
Mushbie: yeees
oberon939: Oooooooo
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 May I suggest Brian Balogh's book "Chain Reaction." All about the crazy proposed uses for nukes. Like digging harbors.
e_bloc: @ArtDecoSunburn lol
Mushbie: with guest host Milo Edwards
e_bloc: well I am going to watch it now
TXC2: don't stand next to the missile kids
SnackPak_: oh yeah
SymphonySolstice: amazing
JadedCynic: I'm impressed at the speed of sending the pics from CIA field agents on the Czech border...
TXC2: ArtDecoSunburn oh neat
goombalax: hey just like my Guardian
iris_of_ether: Ruh roh

SymphonySolstice: omg
iris_of_ether: D:

TXC2: gualdhar yes, but there's A LOT of cross talk, so that can put people off

SymphonySolstice: meat explosion.....
Juliamon:

Kentosaurus: rip
ArtDecoSunburn: @e_bloc That's a very congenial way of doing things.
e_bloc: not to harp on the nedelin catastrophe, but the fact that the one guy who survived left to go smoke and everyone else was killed as a result of a 'security fence' is pretty comical
TXC2: mind boggling that Nixon came from California
ArtDecoSunburn: I'm surprised they didn't make the television anchor look like Walter Cronkite.
TXC2: e_bloc the one time smoking saved a life
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 And was a Quaker.
SnackPak_: yup
gualdhar: oh yeah
iris_of_ether: Huh
e_bloc: you bet your ass
TXC2: Damn America is weird
ArtDecoSunburn: Southern California was a Republican stronghold from 1920s to 1990s.
e_bloc: he still served in the military
MalFnord: A very lapsed Quaker
TheMerricat: "Richard Nixon was raised in a conservative, evangelical Quaker household and maintained his membership with the Friends Church throughout his life, but he was not a "practicing" Quaker in the traditional, pacifist sense. He rarely attended worship services as an adult and often diverged from Quaker tenets, notably by serving in the military. "
CaptainSpam: @TXC2 You forget, California is big. Very big.
goombalax: I would have taken him for more of an Unreal Tournament guy
e_bloc: maybe as bad as being a quaker as he was at being a conspirator
TXC2: CaptainSpam fair
ArtDecoSunburn: He was both a drinker and a hater of his poor background as a Quaker from a lemon farm in the middle of nowhere.
kingandcommoner: I know its become fairly common, but the banjo kazooie voices are starting to bug me in this game for some reason. Maybe just because i have an idea of what these guys should sound like
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 Consider this that always blew my students' minds: in 1950, the state that voted most Republican can was Vermont. The state that voted most Democratic was Mississippi.
e_bloc: yes
kingandcommoner: I think its SH
gualdhar: Steve Perscetti
oberon939: Booshemy
TheMerricat: @ArtDecoSunburn Of course back then the parties were swapped....
ArtDecoSunburn: There's Oscars buzz for Steve Buscemi for next year. Apparently his upcoming movie is very imprressive.
goombalax: i should watch death of stalin again soon
Gekyouryuu: I was SHOCKED when it turned out Steve Buscemi was Starscream in the Transformers One movie
goombalax: @Gekyouryuu HE WOT
ArtDecoSunburn: @e_bloc Well, when you rely on G Gordon Liddy and Haldemann ...
e_bloc: lol
DrLigmaPhD: Yes
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat Well, more like a slow drift of conservatives and liberals consolidating in new geographic and social status arrangment.

Juliamon: Hope you like presidential cariactures

SymphonySolstice:

TheMerricat: Chat, if any of you are fans of Firefly, expect anger or jubilation this weekend. Nathan Fillion has been posting teaser videos with all the remaining cast indicating a 'big announcement ' in Sunday. I know the firefly subreddit has gotten itself worked into a tizzy... And I can't see anything other than the miraculous resurrection of the series to not cause them to go into meltdown.
A_Catastrophic_Success: I’ve seen that, my guess is a cast reunion on their podcast, Once We Were Spacemen
TXC2: 25 year anniversary isn't it ?
A_Catastrophic_Success: not getting my hopes up for anything else
Vinewood_OG: @A_Catastrophic_Success That was my thought too
RELDnahcire:
they've already had almost the whole cast on individually on the podcast, this seems like something else to me. Not sure what, sure it will cause fans to be sad because it isn't a full reboot up to and including resurrection of Ron glass...
TXC2: and we're back
ArtDecoSunburn: @Juliamon Who doesn't?
RandomTrivia: Cool little puzzler
e_bloc: thumbs up
7gorobei: Summer Glau is doing the mom thing for now and the forseeable future though she hasnt ruled out returning to acting, so it is hard to see a restart of the series with out her.
ArtDecoSunburn: @RELDnahcire I wonder if appreciation of Ron Glass led to an uptick in "Firefly" fans discovering "Barney Miller" ?
Juliamon: ArtDecoSunburn I'll be honest: me. Politics-focused stuff has never been my thing.
TXC2: he is yes
Vinewood_OG: Yeahhhh
ArtDecoSunburn: @Juliamon Sometimes that's the sanest approach to life, Juliamon.
TXC2: the movie is a nice neat bow on it
TheMerricat: I could live with Firefly TNG.
Juliamon: yeah... when your life is inherently political, it becomes hard to care about it in a productive way
ogundiety: I actually wouldn't mind a firefly thing where they do like 'the original crew is all dead, but what HAPPENED to them' and it's about uncovering the conspiracy stuff
ogundiety: and maybe some cameos here and htere from original crew
TheMerricat: I have a feeling more though it's going to be Firefly Cruise Ship announcement
ArtDecoSunburn: It's very difficult to address the Western as a genre without considering the awkward indigenous representation and post-Civil War aftermath.
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat "You'll love our midnight, all you can eat Reaver buffet!"
RELDnahcire: @ArtDecoSunburn wait, is it reaver themed or are they feeding me to the reavers 🤣 ?
TXC2:
I'd say Nikita sounds more like a real name then Lyndon
ArtDecoSunburn: @Juliamon There are so many slices attention can be cut into, for sure.
TheMerricat:
@RELDnahcire
SymphonySolstice: I can't believe cam is the reason the cuban missile crisis happened
ArtDecoSunburn: @SymphonySolstice "The Cameron Missile Crisis"
ArtDecoSunburn: @RELDnahcire Probably depends on how early you book the cruise.
CaptainSpam: I'm liking the concept of a domino mask with a mustache built-in.
TXC2:
imagine the time line where JFK ran that B&B
TXC2: RIGHT?!
SymphonySolstice: hm
SnackPak_: that's gonna sit with me for a while
7gorobei: the music is half a note off of gilligans island
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 LBJ was named after a prominent Texas trial lawyer his father admired. His mother agreed, as long as it could be spelled with a "y" rather than the actual "i."
TXC2: ArtDecoSunburn huh, TIL
ArtDecoSunburn: Cam, apparently Trump loved playing MC for sports banquets when he was in high school. We'd all be better had he found better ways to channel his desire to be center of attention host.
TXC2: so LBJ's mom was the same as modern moms who give odd speelling to their kids
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 "Jackie, let's get our guests some chowdah and croissants."

ArtDecoSunburn: Jack and Bobby. That's a whole thing.
RELDnahcire: Jack and Diane?
TXC2: wasn't his older (dead) brother Johnny?
CaptainSpam: Any gadgets to buy?
ArtDecoSunburn: Yup. Named after the father.
TXC2: the eldest who was meant to president, got killed in WW2
ArtDecoSunburn: Pilot, yes.
TXC2: part of why JFK had to be a navy man
Nigouki: yeah, he did explode doing early "drone" stuff
JKBalch:

ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 Right. And Jack was supposed to be a lawyer, and Bobby maybe a priest. They all got moved up a slot when the oldest died. The father had plans.
TXC2:
ArtDecoSunburn yeah, he sure did

ArtDecoSunburn: The Kennedy family would not like RFK as jester to LBJ. Those two men despised each other with a passion.
SymphonySolstice: I'd get out of the car tbh
TXC2: the answer is no, it was manslaughter at most
SohNata: I played along with it as I think that's what he wanted. Weirdly, not even the worst Uber experience I had there in three days
Vinewood_OG: Barrel roll out the door to skip dialogue.
SymphonySolstice: "who's princess diana"
Juliamon: as an American I'll never understand other Americans' desire to give a shit about royalty
Juliamon: was that not the whole point of our country's independence, to get away from that shit?
ArtDecoSunburn: @SohNata I once had a cab driver in Baton Rouge explain to me in great detail how he though FDR had Huey Long killed: "Mr. Roosevelt done called down to Mr. Ickes, and Mr. Ickes done called down to N'awlins . . ."
TXC2:
Juliamon historically they're fascinating, the current ones, not so much
SohNata: @ArtDecoSunburn Oh yikes
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 Can't understand that sentiment at all.
memnus: Oh this crank mechanic is awful
ArtDecoSunburn: @SohNata We should get the two cab drivers together to theorize.
SohNata: Game has top tier "talking noises"
TXC2:
this is how field radios worked
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 I feel like video games help keep alive memory of crank-operated electronics.
TXC2: indeed
ggodopaste: THis game feels like it'd be an anxiety attack to play
Nigouki: "Crankin' It At The White House" shouldn't induce this much anxiety
CaptainSpam: Seems like the sort of thing to scratch the anxiety-simulator itch of the older Cook, Serve, Delicious games.
Serpens77: the round call goes in the.... square hole
ArtDecoSunburn: Relevant to the game dialogue: LBJ was a huge jerk, and he usedto call in staff and take meetings with an open bathroom door to deliberately assert his dominance. So he didn't urinate lying down, he did it full on display of his poor underlings.
Vinewood_OG: And now everyone glows in the dark.
ggodopaste: It's legitimately tough for me to watch the gameply, I don't blame you, Cam
ArtDecoSunburn: You want an example of how crude he was, look up the White House tape recordings of LBj ordering a pair of pants. You can find them on YouTube
Vinewood_OG: @ArtDecoSunburn I have heard that far too many times.
ArtDecoSunburn: Pretty much.
Juliamon: men... men never change
ArtDecoSunburn: The Cabinet.
Vinewood_OG: Never needed to hear a world leader say "bunghole."
TXC2: the clown shoes
ArtDecoSunburn: Florsheims.
ArtDecoSunburn: It's a. Brand.
ogundiety: It's not very expensive or noteworthy
niccus: apparently a decent brand, currently suing the administration for tariffs
TheHunnehBunneh: I credit Last Week Tonight with how I know the LBJ big balls fact lol
ogundiety: the shoes are like $110 or so, apparently
ArtDecoSunburn: Trump wears shoes too large for him because he has lifts in his
Vinewood_OG: From the Desantis spring collection
Juliamon: and they could all just... buy ones that actually fit, and they fuckin don't
ogundiety: I think they're actually claiming larger shoe sizes beacuse they are THAT insecure about their masculinity
ArtDecoSunburn: Florsheims are fine. They're probably embarrassed to be associated with him.
ggodopaste: man, when my grandfather started sundowning I didn't get any shoes.
ArtDecoSunburn: @Vinewood_OG Ha!
Juliamon: when I first heard about it I figured Trump has just heard *of* Fluevogs but couldn't remember the name, just knew it started with F
ArtDecoSunburn: We're a long way from the days of "Knife 'em" Rahm Emmanual, Obama's chief of staff, being a former ballet dancer.
ArtDecoSunburn: @ggodopaste Any caramels?
ggodopaste: @ArtDecoSunburn SO MANY CARAMELS!

iris_of_ether: Fisher Price's My First Cold War
TXC2:
or a shooter set in Vietnam
ArtDecoSunburn: @iris_of_ether "The Soviet cow goes 'moo-ski'"
Kentosaurus: pentagon war strategists already gamified the cold war if you think about it
Voidhawk42: My dad plays Twilight Struggle at his boardgames club...
ArtDecoSunburn: Most switchboard operators were women.
niccus: play some Defcon for old time's sake?
ArtDecoSunburn: The Pentagon lines in the 60s were run by soldiers. Teletype.

ArtDecoSunburn: Right. The Pentagon shape encloses vast floor space while allowing inner rings.
ArtDecoSunburn: I met a guy who's mother's family fortune came for selling all the bricks for the Pentagon.
Vinewood_OG: That's the Civ brain kicking in!
TheMerricat:
Turns out apparently it was also influenced by the fact that the plot that they purchased for the building was five-sided.
Nigouki: they probably just wanted to inscribe a five-pointed star into it
Juliamon:
Ooh, we could pivot to Civ for something less stressful
TheMerricat: Never thought of them as great men.
WiJohn: I think you're on to something here
RandomTrivia: That was sort of the plot of Chess

TXC2: I was told history ended
TXC2:

Kentosaurus: great as in large?
ArtDecoSunburn: I usually taught the Kennedy-Nixon-Johnson years as a Shakespearian narrative, partly Henriad. And then bring in the forgotten people standing in the wings.
WiJohn: Like Palpatine?!
Voidhawk42: Somehow, History Returned
RandomTrivia:
Alternatively, they were all played by Peter Sellers
TheMerricat: You're making me cry now...
ggodopaste: They were very large! good thing we petrified them into Mount Rushmoore
ArtDecoSunburn: I spent a large part of December arguing for inclusion of the "end of history" moment in a coffee table history book of the 1990s. It was important, at the time.
ggodopaste: My dad figured between Nam and Nukes he'd never reach thirty.
Vinewood_OG: "Buy your Y2K bat today!"
iris_of_ether: Someone at work was like "lol Y2K was overhyped", and I went off on them because I remember all the work engineers did to avoid it being a problem
ggodopaste: @iris_of_ether SERIOUSLY
Juliamon: YES the GODDAMN OZONE LAYER
Juliamon: WE DID SHIT and EVERYONE FORGOT
ArtDecoSunburn: FF's "end of history" was about the triumph of capitalism. How optimistic they were.
TXC2: AKA problems we spent a lot of effort to fix and thus FIXED
SymphonySolstice: because we fixed it!!!!!! so it's not a problem anymore!!!!!!
TheMerricat: God we were so optimistic back in the 80's and early 90's then Tiananmen Square happened and everyone woke up and remembered that not everyone was on board with USA USA USA
ggodopaste: turns out, some things are fixable
SnackPak_: I would simply fix the problems
Vinewood_OG:
Michael Bay didn't make a movie about it.... guess it never happened.
ArtDecoSunburn: Don't forgot the population crisis of the 1980s. People forgot how major that was.
Nigouki: well, we are occasionally seeing HUGE plumes of illegal CFCs from some Chinese factories and they just go nuh-uh
WiJohn: I thought we established the great men were going to take care of that?
kumatsu: my dad was an engineer that worked on Y2K for the database company he worked for
FauksStarling: But Cam, actually fixing our problems makes the profit line go down and that makes the shareholders VERY sad.
TXC2:
but instead we choose rich people's yacht money
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat It' s been a long time since a year like 1968 or 1989.
WiJohn: Won't somebody think of the shareholders?!
iris_of_ether: Yeah I was touring engineering firms during that time because I was about to enter college
ggodopaste: I never thought Shadowrun was supposed to be the good future. . .
ArtDecoSunburn: @Voidhawk42 Was it molten and hooded, like Palpatine?
kumatsu: get me some Aqua Cola
Neddy471: At this point "The Day After" might be the good future.
ArtDecoSunburn: @ggodopaste Crimson Skies, man. Alternate past.
Vinewood_OG: I play a lot of Fallout, because at least the worst is over, and I get to rebuild.
Nigouki: oh god
SnackPak_: they has a shopping cart
Voidhawk42: The good future was postponed by Stanislav Petrov
Vinewood_OG:
Not The Road

ggodopaste: Mad Max would be acceptable, but I would rather have tusks
Neddy471: @Vinewood_OG For real real.
Nigouki: I once went into a screening of The Road completely blind, only seeing the poster and going "oh hey, it's Viggo"
ggodopaste: I read that in highschool, in one night, because there's no chapter breaks
FauksStarling: @ggodopaste Yeah, when no one got Goblinized a few years back, I was a little disappointed.
ggodopaste: @FauksStarling SERIOUSLY
ggodopaste: It was a helluva night
Gekyouryuu: Oh, speaking of reading experiences, cam, I saw someone posit that you can adapt House of Leaves if you do it as a YouTube Poop
Neddy471: "Unexplained Genetic Expression"
ggodopaste: Unexplained Genetic Expression
ArtDecoSunburn: It does say something about our time s when "Blood Meridian" seems to offer uplifting perspective.
BlindProphet32: SURGE came later with the comet
ggodopaste: Sudden Unexplained Genetic Expression was Haley's comet
ArtDecoSunburn: @ggodopaste That's such a 1990s framing. Very Human Genome Project/Gattaca era.
ggodopaste: and tails!
Neddy471: There's an "R" in Year of the Comet, because of "SURGE"
Vinewood_OG: Real not my Trek vibes
TXC2: when you think about, the Wizards in LotR have a shockingly low success rate
ggodopaste: I made an NPC that's basically a Tiefling
Vinewood_OG: I cast fans be normal
Nigouki: they found the Real pipeweed
Neddy471: "Sudden Unexpained Recessive Genetic Expression" is the Year of the Comet thing.
Neddy471: "SURGE"
ArtDecoSunburn: @Vinewood_OG Do you think there are militant Trekkies who followed Shatner to other series and get as picky about "Tekwars" ?
SymphonySolstice: they just kinda peaced out
ggodopaste: @ArtDecoSunburn I don't think anyone got picky about Tekwars
ArtDecoSunburn: It's terrible. Also very 1990s.

aitsu100: i read books for the pictures
TXC2: "he was paid by the word" wasn't everyone back then?
kumatsu: woah now, don't get too wild out here. LIKING reading?
ArtDecoSunburn: The PBS "Bleak House" from a few years ago is not bad.
SymphonySolstice: liking reading words is unfortunately on a decline
ggodopaste: people are still often paid by the word
iris_of_ether: I feel less bad about being told I wrote like Dickens in high school
Kentosaurus: I'm paid by the hour because I'm good at procrastinating
TXC2: it makes it different

TheMerricat: Night @TXC2 !
TXC2: Goodnight everybody, and thanks for streaming Cameron
ArtDecoSunburn: Good evening, TXC2.
TheMerricat: Chat, for those of you who cook. I'm looking at my pantry to come up with a list of things to 'cook off' because they've been in there forever... what are your thoughts on adding a can of enchilada sauce to crockpot chili?
iris_of_ether: @TheMerricat Use as replacement to tomato sauce yes
Vinewood_OG: @TheMerricat That could totally work.
iris_of_ether: I don't use enchilada sauce as much as I use like El Pato Mexican tomato sauce, but I don't see an issue with it
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat Sure. Beef is your base?
TheMerricat:
@ArtDecoSunburn TVP with beef bullion, but yeah.
Serpens77:
good old Tiny Vomit Pieces
ArtDecoSunburn: Sounds tasty. Should slow cook up well.
iris_of_ether: Yeah it's totally cool, just like make sure your liquid amounts look okay haha
Vinewood_OG: You can buy premade Sofrito, to use as a base for anything. Changed my gringo life.
TokenMickus: Chat is doing [BotW cooking sounds]
TheMerricat:
Thanks chat. Bought five cans of that a couple of years ago thinking I'd start making enchiladas ... turns out while I might like them... they are far more work than other things that I make out of the same ingredients.
iris_of_ether:
Go forth and chili
iris_of_ether: I only ever batch-make enchiladas and freeze most in glass containers
TheMerricat:
@Serpens77 That's my dad's take on them too. My take is beef is $6-7 a lb here and I can get like 20lb of rehydrated TVP for $19.
TheMerricat:
@iris_of_ether If I ever get my kitchen back in order enough to do that sort of batch cooking that'd definitely be something I'd try. Still miles off though.
CaptainSpam: Hi back, we're chat.
iris_of_ether: *nod nod* I also have like 3 discrete freezers so
TheMerricat: That sounds perfect.
Serpens77: @TheMerricat sensible!
ArtDecoSunburn: @iris_of_ether Impressive. I'd love that much freezer space. I can barely cram enough frozen broccoli packets and pork chops in my apartment kitchen freezer.

ArtDecoSunburn: @iris_of_ether I like the implication of a beholder gnawing down on sausage chickpea coup.
TheMerricat:
@ArtDecoSunburn My biggest problem is my kitchen isn't currently in shape to do much more than park a slowcooker in it and do dishes, so I've got most of my cooking going on upstairs in a converted office/bedroom which makes bulking anything a huge process of juggling dishes too small for the amounts I'm trying to make.
ArtDecoSunburn: Soup.
iris_of_ether: @ArtDecoSunburn Oh yeah it's in the Sigil Planescape section of the book too
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat Understand that. Thank goodness for crock pots.
ggodopaste: So, what is the setup for this, and does it tie in to other Marathons?
ForOhForError: soup good. reminds me that I need to make this zelda inspired pumpkin soup again
ArtDecoSunburn: @iris_of_ether I assume Planescape city of Torment is also Planescape City of Delicious Food.
iris_of_ether: There are also some very good very Polish soups in the Witcher cookbook
Nigouki: doesn't this make it more of a Sprint?
iris_of_ether: "But Iris you can probably get these recipes in less gimmicky forms" Listen I gotta get my joy somewhere in 2026
ArtDecoSunburn: Is there a numeric correlation between the amount of time you have and the actual distance of a marathon?
TheMerricat:
@iris_of_ether
thedepthandbreadthofseth: Hi @LoadingReadyRun Cam, hi chat. So, who are the people here now?
ForOhForError: it's a marathon because you're here forever /s
ArtDecoSunburn: Interesting. Thank you.
ArtDecoSunburn: @iris_of_ether Gamifying supposedly makes everything better. So why not gameify recipes with actual game flavor?
TheMerricat: The in game explanation of why we have limited time is because we aren't actually on planet, we are piloting a shell, and the unique nature of the planet causes corruption in the link , 25 is the max time we can run a shell before the link becomes corrupted enough that we have to disconnect.
ErynTzun:

Juliamon: It not perfect system
thedepthandbreadthofseth: @ArtDecoSunburn but the meat always tastes so gamey that way.
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat I love elaborate lore justifications for things decided for technical game reasons.
ErynTzun: Rurt roah raggy
iris_of_ether: But for non -cooking nerd books, the UFO50 Strategy Guide (Fangamer?) actively rules
ArtDecoSunburn: There were some amazing sound design discussions around last year's Oscar nominees. "Zone of Interest" derives much of its power from sound.
thedepthandbreadthofseth: so, who are the bad guys?
ghizmou: you should
ArtDecoSunburn: @thedepthandbreadthofseth Nothing like some venison that tastes like it won thirty levels of Mario.
HortonFearsACoup: Are we the baddies?
TheMerricat: @thedepthandbreadthofseth In theory, we are. The UESC has claimed the planet and we are working for corpos to loot it.
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat So, "Avatar" ?
thedepthandbreadthofseth: @TheMerricat sorry, who are the competing interests?
TheMerricat: @ArtDecoSunburn So the OG games, this colony was nuked by aliens between 1 and 2. Our deal then was dealing with the aliens _and_ an semi-evil AI that turned on humanity and had a god complex.
ArtDecoSunburn: A semi-evil AI? Only violates first three of Asimov's laws?
TheMerricat: We've only seen signs of the OG aliens in trailers so far, but the assumption is, they'll probably be a fairly large factor in the game if it manages to keep it's legs under it.
CaptainSpam: So, are we against human players here, or just bots?
ArtDecoSunburn: Thank you for describing the factions. I always appreciate differentiate teams remember Sid Meier's "Alpha Centuari"? Great planetary faction design.
CaeloftheStorm: @CaptainSpam Both!
HortonFearsACoup: Ah the speedrn strat
TheMerricat: @ArtDecoSunburn In most of Bungie's works, AI has an expiration date, where when it lives too long it becomes 'rampant' due to all the knowledge and etc. that it acquires. Rampant AI's tend to treat humanity at best as toys, at worst, as pests to be eliminated.
CaeloftheStorm: Players are technically the larger threat, but on outpost especially, UESC are quite dangerous
BrindleBoar: I guess if I'm going to miss out on a stream of Cam playing Maratho nit might as well be because I was playing Marathon
TheMerricat:
@BrindleBoar
Juliamon: BrindleBoar If it helps, he hasn't been playing that long
HortonFearsACoup: F
CaeloftheStorm: @TheMerricat Technically, I believe the """official term""" is grey deviance. AI's are created with goals and objectives and as they learn too much, their scope changes and they realign themselves to optimize themselves to complete their only objective.
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat Interesting. Sort of "Colossus: The Forbin Project."
CaeloftheStorm: In Marathon's lore, there's a lot of additional weird factors influencing the AI's behavior in the storyline
BrindleBoar: Vandal's double jump is a big help in Outpost
TheMerricat: @ArtDecoSunburn Exactly.
ArtDecoSunburn: @CaeloftheStorm Now that's an interesting re-interpretation of Norbert Weiner's cybernetics feedback loops.
TheMerricat:
If you are wondering why the loading screens are so moth themed. Our shells on planet are being built by geneticly engineered moths.
CaeloftheStorm: Creative routes are my favorite parts of this game. There's so much to mantle on and the combat just feels great, especially with volt weapons
Juliamon: I want to pet them
CaeloftheStorm: @TheMerricat Praise the WEAVEworms
BrindleBoar: @TheMerricat they were made by Mommy Nona
Kentosaurus: moth of the month
thedepthandbreadthofseth: I'm sorry, suck-a-whatnow?

BrindleBoar: I don't know what the possible meanings for "Seki" are but I'm pretty sure the "guchi" is mouth
CaeloftheStorm: what's da MIDA bby, not feeling very sexygucci??
TheMerricat:

thedepthandbreadthofseth: so, can we retrieve physical items from this planet?
CaeloftheStorm: @TheMerricat I assure you, your digital eyeroll is more than enough!
CaeloftheStorm: @thedepthandbreadthofseth Yes! The exfill beacons are the way off planet and just send a massive beam of light up
BrindleBoar: that's 7 mags, not rounds
BrindleBoar: the 100 is the current mag's charge
thedepthandbreadthofseth: @CaeloftheStorm so, there's teleportation technology. We're basically just scouts.

TheMerricat: Cameron. I want to suggest, that you are uniquely a better person for being able to say that instead of "COME ON WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BULLSHIT" which is what I always run into when I play teams on these types of games.
loufghyslaufey: Also "Woah", Marathon is a "Walky-Tawky" Stream?
BrindleBoar: uh squad talk is T, prox chat is Y (by default)
JKBalch: "This guy is doing a101 lecture, jump him"
CaeloftheStorm: @thedepthandbreadthofseth Somewhat! You're there to steal stuff from the UESC (space cops who who were around for the marathon's operations). Lots of factions have claims to the wreckage for various reasons or other things, and you just are around to pick things up and do missions on plannet
thedepthandbreadthofseth: my bean and cheese burrito seems to be without cheese. le sad.

ArtDecoSunburn: Well, you've played many shooters. How often do you operate a switchboard?
BrindleBoar: I've found it easier to overcome gear fear than in other extrooters, but it's also the... fifth, at least, that I've put serious time in, so I dunno.
BrindleBoar: *in Marathon
ForOhForError: detector stuff is cool
ArtDecoSunburn: I used to drag my history of technology undergrads to ATT facilities as a field trip. See a switching station.
Anubis169: Somewhere, I still have a book from the late 1800s that tells you how to wire up onto of the first telephone exchanges
Anubis169: one of the first*
TheMerricat: @BrindleBoar The fact that it seems to be setup with the assumption that 'scav' is the preferred/default play style is nice.
iris_of_ether: They completely are
ArtDecoSunburn: The cloud is a definite place. Loudon County, Virginia.
niccus: like pointed out in the jon bois series, we're pretty much still using the same network
Anubis169: 🤣
iris_of_ether: Huh
BrindleBoar: @TheMerricat I don't think I agree with that exactly, a green shield is a huge bump in survivability, but always being able to just grab a free kit and do a "see what happens" run is great.
TheMerricat: No it's true, they used to run phone connections thorugh the barbed wires.
ArtDecoSunburn: Barbed wire is pretty central to multiple narratives of rural life, including laying down poles.

Cam: I did find out that there are two types of modern module, an FXS (for generating a voltage) and an FXO (for taking calls). If you use an FXS module in the wrong place and send a voltage to wrong way up your photographer, it just blows up the exchange. There are no safeguards
Anubis169: up for phoneline*
Anubis169: Also fuck touchscreens
Anubis169: I never had this problem with a keyboard >_<
ArtDecoSunburn: I believe that was a subplot of Joseph Conrad's "The Secret Agent," where the anarchists decided to blow up the Greenwich Observatory instead of blowing up the telephone exchange.
LordZarano: Like how alligator clipped coathangers provide better audio than $3000 pure silver audio cables, because cross section matters way more than material. So why not barbed wire
ArtDecoSunburn: Like the French bread at the Chinese buffet?
ArtDecoSunburn: Garlic bread, I mean.
Dread_Pirate_Westley: Why is there a buffet without garlic bread?

Juliamon: It turns out, certain former crypto mining rigs have the right specs for a good gaming box
TheMerricat: "The ASRock AMD BC-250 is an inexpensive (~$120-$145), former crypto-mining board featuring a cut-down PlayStation 5 (PS5) APU (6-core Zen 2, 24-CU RDNA 2 GPU, 16GB GDDR6) often repurposed into a budget Linux-based Steam console. It requires significant custom cooling, an 8-pin power connector, and generally runs Bazzite OS for gaming."
LordZarano: The BC in that serial code stands for BitCoin I believe
Vinewood_OG: You don't need BOTH kidneys!
NotCainNorAbel: I was looking at SD Cards recently, I'm so sad
ArtDecoSunburn: I remember in 2018 making the case why the Smithsonian should collect a Bitcoin rig as emblematic of the times. Now they're too expensive.
xantos69: Finally play Crysis?
Kipstar: start a grilled sandwich business!
Vinewood_OG:
@xantos69
ArtDecoSunburn: @Kipstar A crypto sandwich food truck!
TheMerricat:
@NotCainNorAbel Same. My phone is going out and I wanted to pick up a 1tb sd card to back it up to before factory resetting it and the cost of one is more than just buying a refurbished version of my phone.
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat So much for the promise of cheap memory.
Dread_Pirate_Westley: Game is allegedly good.
TheMerricat:
If it's not Paul, I RIOT.
