JKBalch: "try reading" should be the next dark souls soapstone
ArtDecoSunburn: I've seen the outcome of force-breaking codes with levers. It didn't end well personally for Alan Turing.
TXC2:
look there's only 67,600 possible combinations, how long could that possibly take?
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 From what I recall of Bradbury's "The One Million Names of God," we'll know when the stars start blinking out because we hit all the combinations.
TXC2:
ArtDecoSunburn oh that long? but I'm in bed in 30 mins
ArtDecoSunburn: I know what this reminds me of. Book III of "Gulliver's Travels," where Gulliver encounters the royal academy of Laputa, where they just constantly turn over racks of letters in a frame looking for patterns and truth. (Kind of like an LLM.)
TheMerricat: So are we going under the assumption that most of the letter codes are author initials?
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 We'll try to hurry along the whole sussing out the divine. I understand a tight bedtime schedule.
Thefluffiestguineapig: This seems very enigma machine to me
LordZarano: If checking codes takes 3 seconds average then that's only 56⅓ hours, which is positively short for some games
Sethalidos: was that whaat W&P played in January?
Thefluffiestguineapig: Which I'm so here for
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheMerricat The date-basedyear codes is too APA for my liking. Let's get some Chicago or Turabian citation in here.
TXC2: A church that really focuses on the whipping of the merchants from the temple part of the bible
TrinityKaiser: @Thefluffiestguineapig it did mention that the machine started as something made to help germany in the war
Thefluffiestguineapig: @TrinityKaiser Well, that would for sure be the enigma machine
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig Very much like Turing's bombe that force decoded the Enigma machine.
Strebenherz: @TrinityKaiser I thought they said breaking German codes or something like that
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 Their services are just flipping tables and flaying moneylenders?
TrinityKaiser: No no, I’m sure it was something made by the germans, or at least used by them
Thefluffiestguineapig: The Enigma Machine was made to encode things by the Germans and was a HUGE problem for the allies till Turing IIRC
TheMerricat: The 89 refers to a document _talking_ about the destruction of the book, so it wouldn't be by QL, but someoen else.
Thefluffiestguineapig: Which I might not
ArtDecoSunburn: The proto-hyperlink interface is very much in the mould of Bush's "As We May Think" from 1945.
Thefluffiestguineapig: I know for sure everything but that Turing was the one who cracked the machine
TXC2:
ArtDecoSunburn yes, they take "render onto Caesar what is Caesar’s" to mean turn bankers into candals
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig Right. His machine was called the Bombe. He used the work of Polish codebreakers.
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 Literal rendering. "Fire up the stew pots, boys! It's a high holiday."
TXC2: Turing was part of a team at Bletchley park, others did a LOT of work cracking enigma
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn Ok, thank you. That is way outside my area of comfort chronologically so I always try to double check. Turing took credit for a huge team too
Thefluffiestguineapig: Also the idea of all these white guys doing the work, the Navajo people did a lot of code stuff for the allies too IIRC. If it wasn't them it was another still existing tribe with a very different language base
ArtDecoSunburn: @TXC2 In a previous job, I was responsible for care of two Enigma machines held in a historical collection. There's a viral social media video of me out there opening up their cases to inspect the rotors.
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn DAMN that's awesome
TXC2: ArtDecoSunburn cool
SnackPak_: ArtDecoSunburn that is very cool
Thefluffiestguineapig: I don't care about the social media, more the care of the machines
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig The Japanese had no scholars who could read Navajo. It was brilliant.
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn The Americans barely could
ArtDecoSunburn: The NSA has a museum at Ft. Meadei in Maryland that has great exhibits on both Turing's code breaking and the Navajo and Hopi codes
Thefluffiestguineapig: What platforms is this game on?
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig It's a great example of how diversity of people and cultural was a material strength to the American military. Take that, bigots!

Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn It absolutely is a main reason we had op sec as good as we did in the Pacific Theater. That's not a theory, it's a fact
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn The number of women at Bletchly Park was A LOT

Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn And NASA
thedepthandbreadthofseth: Hi drs Cori and Cam. What's this game?
thedepthandbreadthofseth: Ooo, are we code breaking?

@thedepthandbreadthofseth TR-49 - aka the 'hunt and peck inside a massive database for clues' game.
TXC2: hello thedepthandbreadthofseth this game is TR-49, a decoding story game
Thefluffiestguineapig: Did I get distracted by fun history tangents and miss what platforms this is on?
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig Yup. I had lunch with the author of "Hidden Figures" last week. We're building a database of all the NASA and NACA human computers for posterity.
AMuseOfFirebane: @Thefluffiestguineapig it's def on steam, just wishlisted it there, let me check if they've got a website

Gaelan_Maestro: Deathworld is an awesome harry harrison
Gaelan_Maestro: work
Thefluffiestguineapig: I recently read The Long Walk as a corollary to The Stand universe and HOLY MOLY it's very dark and very real
xantos69: The issue has never been and should never be "Are the kids reading crap". The important thing is "Are the kids also reading good stuff in addition to their crap."
Thefluffiestguineapig: @xantos69 Also "are the kids reading" and "what can we teach them about analyzing whatever they are reading"
Thefluffiestguineapig: I was partially taught analytical reading skills on Star Wars EU material
ArtDecoSunburn: @xantos69 It's amusing how works can flip categories. Remember how novels were seen as suspect when they first emerged.
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn Remember how any printed copy of the Bible was seen as suspect as opposed to the hand written versions?
xantos69: @ArtDecoSunburn Yea, crap in media is a moving target. Variety is also important.
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig I'm a big fan of the pre-"Empire Strikes Back" EU stuff. I call it Star Wars incunabula.
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn I love Timothy Zahn to be clear, but my dad was teaching me to compare the Zahn stuff to other things because he was a genius
Thefluffiestguineapig: (Meaning he knew my mother wouldn't notice and also help me with critical thinking about stuff)
Thefluffiestguineapig: My father was also a very smart man, but that kind of stuff was so good. Also Grapes of Wrath is very public domain
tdapenguin: @Thefluffiestguineapig Yay to your dad!
Thefluffiestguineapig: This game is gaining more and more of my respect, these devs were so creative
Thefluffiestguineapig: Thanks also hello friend tdapenguin!
Coloneljesus: I'd actually be quite interested in you finishing this game. Took me around 6h so it should be doable in 2 streams
tdapenguin: Hello @thefluffiestguineapig friend!!
Thefluffiestguineapig: @Coloneljesus Same, this seems right in their wheelhouse especially with the extensive literature that they both cover
tdapenguin: @Coloneljesus I think that'd be neat too! Fwiw
Coloneljesus: and the ending does a cool thing
tdapenguin: Oooh!
kusinohki: meows
Thefluffiestguineapig: I would be interested in seeing Kathleen play this too, or other really literature/word puzzle inclined LRRsm'ns (non-gendered)
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig Kathleen is a word structure fiend.
tdapenguin: @kusinohki
tdapenguin:
@kusinohki
Thefluffiestguineapig: I like watching different brains pick apart the same material
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn Also Graham potentially due to the way they play with syntax and stuff
EbDorian: Alex would eat-up the setting
tdapenguin:
@Thefluffiestguineapig
agree
Thefluffiestguineapig: @EbDorian I would rather see Alex and Paul play more of the game with the duct tape patching of walls
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig I'd love to hear Graham and Kathleen sit down and disect a Nabakov novel in casual conversation. Say "Ada" or "Pale Fire." They'd be right at the intersection of wordplay and aesthetics.
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig I third this motion.
KaleidoscopeMind: Nine Princes of Amber is Zelazny
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn On the one hand potentially yes, but Kathleen also might not have the patience for Nabakov's BS. I know I didn't but I also had a very bad teacher trying to talk at me about it
drewm1022: Roger Zelazny is my absolute favorite author.
ArtDecoSunburn: @Thefluffiestguineapig That's the worst kind of instructor.
ArtDecoSunburn: "Pale Fire."
Thefluffiestguineapig: @ArtDecoSunburn ESPECIALLY for someone like Nabakov
Coloneljesus: in a good or bad way?
Thefluffiestguineapig: Sorry, I can't spell
ArtDecoSunburn: It is. I'm on a Blackberry, remember.
kusinohki: naboo cove...
KaleidoscopeMind: Napa Kav(age)
ArtDecoSunburn: @KaleidoscopeMind Ha!
tdapenguin: Wait, are we back to talking about hockey players again? (Nabokov was a goalie)
Thefluffiestguineapig: @tdapenguin No a famous author
KaleidoscopeMind: that hockey player *could* be a famous author someday
Thefluffiestguineapig: True, I'm talking about a currently existing famous author though
Spades_Slicc: That author *could* have played some hockey
tdapenguin: Hi chat, you are all delightful and silly people
Thefluffiestguineapig: @tdapenguin Same to you
tdapenguin: @spades_slicc that's what I was gonna say
tdapenguin: @Thefluffiestguineapig Hugs for everyone in chat who wants them!!
ghizmou: bullet dodge
KaleidoscopeMind: it's very, very clearly a criticism
Coloneljesus: good reason to not date
tdapenguin: Missed the point
Thefluffiestguineapig: That point was profoundly missed
KaleidoscopeMind: a piano crashes right behind you
KeytarCat: I just don't like thinking about pedophilia, even in condemnations 🙃
TehAmelie: it's clearly impossible to come up with mmorally corrupt characters if you aren't corrupt, as someone said in a review of Hard Candy
ArtDecoSunburn: I will take this moment to thank you, Cori and Cameron, and all who program "Talking Sim," for the range of games you do play, and the wide thoughtful conversation while doing so.
tdapenguin: @KeytarCat That's very valid.
xantos69: We can't say they missed the point. They didn't read it. So they refused to engage with the point.
KeytarCat: Break the code of the human mind

ArtDecoSunburn: @tdapenguin That's fair. But you're not condemning the creators, just taking a stand on what you will read. I can relate. I will never watch the movie "Salo," but I can appreciate Pasolini and his intent. I just couldn't watch it myself.

Spades_Slicc: Borges would like Homestuck?
ArtDecoSunburn: Technically we're only a century over the conceptual birth of the hyperlink in 1945 with "Vannevar Bush" and the Memex.
iris_of_ether: Cori no
fiinnnaaaaannnnnnnn: Borges as a homestuckie at an animecon
kamilucky: how did we end up here?
Ned_Flandalorian: oh. think I know who Liam is.
SnackPak_: that sure is an original sentence
Thefluffiestguineapig: Someone send that to Alex now
MTigress: slap that sentence as a review on the game cover
niccus: borges would like homestuck.
ArtDecoSunburn: @fiinnnaaaaannnnnnnn "The Cosplay of Babel."
SnackPak_: shut it down, were done here
TehAmelie: just imagine his reaction at the "title" html code that lets you put hovertext on top of words
niccus: borges is already 6 letters...
tdapenguin: This is what you want to take with you into the land of nod????
Thefluffiestguineapig: @tdapenguin No he wants to escape
TehAmelie: Camelot 3000 springs to mind, a questionable comic book
Coloneljesus: god forbid women do things
MTigress: yey
ArtDecoSunburn: Best way to curate is through a thirty-person committee.
xantos69:
Cam, I'm putting this idea out into the universe. What if you did a Battle Star rewatch with commentary on the themes in both an "at the time" and a what it means to you now, particularly with the rise of modern AI. I never sat down to watch the whole show... and that content would be the kick in the pants I really need to get it done.
