BraveOthello: Strange, it's not bus season yet ...
UnknownFriday: Huh, I do wonder how my SegaCD is holding up. It's been years since I've tried to use the thing.
LoadingReadyRun:
this is the rare non-Desert Bus related Sega CD!
ArtDecoSunburn: It just occurred to me: Given this program's title, has Ian ever done any Le Carre-inspired projects on the show? Spy tech or something as an homage?
Xed_Regulus: There are Sega CDs *not* used my DB!?

TomatoKigu:
Whoho TTSF!
goatprince: that's me
LoadingReadyRun: @UnknownFriday is there a small Genesis?
SnackPak_:

goatprince: i'm headache rn so i'm not currently present
ArdCollider: feel better, Matt
Juliamon: ooh, an update
DrakoniteDev: oh, the capacitors need replaced?
Ravynn: Ooooo fancy
goatprince: delicious nougat exoskeleton
Juliamon: very nougat, yeah

ArtDecoSunburn: @goatprince Exactly. It's like a fine confectionary.

r10pez10: you mean the toaster oven?
goatprince: pegged you say?
Dog_of_Myth: Seems very smooth
TheWriterAleph: o7
ArtDecoSunburn: @UnknownFriday Twitch needs more smelting-centric streams.
Phailhammer:
@goatprince
goatprince: based,
ArtDecoSunburn: @7gorobei Ian does all the gerunds here at TTSF.
SnackPak_: AIUI, proton is wine with patches
DrakoniteDev: proton is a fork of wine
MWGNZ: and valve also sends their work upstream to wine too
Phailhammer:
And the knee bone's connected to the thigh bone~
MalFnord: See, the *real* trick would be to get the Sega CD to run Elden Ring.
DaxStrife: And *now* you add the 32X..
TheWriterAleph: hail to the king, baby
goatprince: be gentle to the old beat, she's a restful one
goatprince: beast*

true gamers insist on playing ‘Kris Kross: Make My Video’ on original hardware
DrakoniteDev: def no history with sega disc based hardware...
ArtDecoSunburn: @TheWriterAleph Makes me think a hardware tinkering show with Bruce Campbell just sitting in the corner occasionally commenting would be fun.
r10pez10: misread as sega CD (model T)
goatprince: Ms Jen E. Sis, are you good?
TheWriterAleph: @ArtDecoSunburn Bruce is the living soundboard that would elevate every show. he'd do it for a six-pack, probably

goatprince: it's full of gas and bugs and who knows if anything else
SnackPak_: wow
MalFnord: Phrasing!
DrakoniteDev: or that adapter is meant for the smaller genesis model
ArtDecoSunburn: @Phailhammer We who are about to die salute your Wahl.
Twilight_Spark: Genassi
Driosenth: Ian, what is the model number on that two cable power brick, that is definitely an OEM cable of some kind.
MacbethSeemsSus: Don't tell the church about second Genesis
paulthemapguy: Yes there was the Peter Gabriel Genesis and the Phil Collins Genesis
s0lesurviv0r: don't forget the CDX
HbombAndFriends: There were actually 3 Genesis versions
Twilight_Spark:
The new, or neon Genesis if you will
DrakoniteDev: there was at least 3 models, and some sub models with internal changes
ArtDecoSunburn: @MacbethSeemsSus "Genesis II: The Legend of Curly's Gold."
SnackPak_: good label
Driosenth: And nothing on the back, super SUS
ArtDecoSunburn: No ULL certification?
TheWriterAleph:

DrakoniteDev: that is the China Export logo
Kentosaurus: yay down the rabbit hole we go
Molator: gweneth paltrows head
omdorastrix: Most things in that range have a listed tolerance of 5-10%
Twilight_Spark:
Oh come now, this is surely more than a little for you
omdorastrix: And esp if the device has a step-down and operates internally on like 5V or something, then 9V vs 12V on in the input really doesn't matter
DrakoniteDev: transformer vs switching
goatprince: b e e f
omdorastrix: electromagnetic intertial mas
letsbelgo: I want the beef in my mouth
HbombAndFriends: More than meets the eye!
DrakoniteDev: dedicated switching regulator chip I'm sure
Driosenth: Both the Sega CD and the Gen 1 Sega Genesis need 9V 1.2A, center negative for power.
omdorastrix: half-wave rect?
MWGNZ:

omdorastrix: Give X volts +- 10%
DrakoniteDev:
not UL listed
DrakoniteDev: LoadingReadyRun the different genesis models had different power plugs. gen3 (the small one) is what this is for
omdorastrix: Multiple tails rather than a breakout end?
goatprince: my partner is watching the stream and eating icecream. such is the life of a supervisor
Driosenth: what is the voltage listed on the back of the BRICK, you are measuring no-load voltage, under load it may drop to 9V
omdorastrix: 13V is likely correct for a 12V PSu, +/- 10% allows for 10.8V to 13.2V. Also Drio is right load vs no-load
Arclight_Dynamo: Volts push, but you pull amps.
Shadwhawk: No, other way around; you want to keep the voltage the same. The device won't draw more amps than it needs.
Arclight_Dynamo: ^
DrakoniteDev: no, other way. voltage needs to be in range. amp needs equal or greater
omdorastrix: Water pipe analogy: Voltage is Pressure and Amps is flow
Driosenth: What Shadwhawk sayid
fiinnnaaaaannnnnnnn: @Arclight_Dynamo you just made a lot of secondary school physics make sense
SnackPak_:

Arclight_Dynamo:
@fiinnnaaaaannnnnnnn Great! Want to explain it back to me? I just know the phrase as a shorthand.
omdorastrix: A device that wants 6 Amps on a 5AMP plug will TRY to pull 6AMPS heating up the 5AMP plug and (possibly) reducing it's life.
goatprince: michael says: 'it needs a CRT filter'
Strebenherz: Do you have the link for that handy Paul?

CaptainSpam: So now for the remaining two hours of the stream, it's Desert Bus Really Really Express!
Phailhammer: Isn't that they one that produced a blooper where Graham? accidentally yeeted the clock he was wearing?
Thefluffiestguineapig: I arrived late, why are we trouble shooting the Sega CD? Just for fun or also DB insurance?
letsbelgo: time to shred
TheAinMAP:

tdapenguin: @Thefluffiestguineapig the player wasn'tturning on.
MacbethSeemsSus: SEGA. IN. SPAAAAAAAACE
TomatoKigu: Track 1 is always data.
Juliamon: Thefluffiestguineapig it belongs to Matt's partner and wasn't turning on
Juliamon: We have already gotten it to turn on.

MWGNZ: that cd seems unbalanced
Juliamon: 90s-2k Japan really loved its novelty mini-CDs
the_phantom_game_player: Hi Wheeler
omdorastrix: Seeing that close-up - I now understand the comments about cleaning
Molator: this is how we break things to be fixed
HorusFive: Just strait onto a router as I recall
rosesmcgee: Pneumatic angle grinder, I think
Driosenth: Question, I had a 52X CD-R burner like 15(?) years ago, did it have multiple write laser heads, could its laser head write multiple tracks at once, or did it just spin faster?
kingandcommoner: The radio star is dead
goatprince: michael is pleased to see the machine operable at this time
loufghyslaufey: Somehow laserdisc gaming didn't take off....!?
Thefluffiestguineapig: Till the fire nation attacked
MacbethSeemsSus: The images! They move!
loufghyslaufey: So Sonic the 2nd Movie? Chat, Ian?
MTigress: sega-cd has a 1x cd-rom drive, so 200rpm on the outer ring, 500rpm on the center areas
the_phantom_game_player: Since this year is the 20th Desert Bus, maybe you can go all out for it
omdorastrix: @Driosenth probably just one R/W unit and spinn fast
DrakoniteDev: IIRC segacd had a cpu similar to the main genesis cpu, but it was hard to use both.
goatprince: ian, please. you dusted the top of it.
niccus: you did professional nothing
HorusFive: Machine saw Ian coming and got scared
DrakoniteDev: @Driosenth just spin faster
goatprince:
breaking up the boys
SquareDotCube: TBH most vintage devices probably should have their power supplies replaced these days as they're more prone to failure with time
omdorastrix: Was there a version that actually fit the same footprint? The Genesis dangling off on the side bothers me in a way I can't reasonably explain
Strebenherz: Vintage game prices are wild
MTigress: i wonder if anyone made a printable extension for the overhang with the 1st gen genesis. i know there's an official extension, but 3d printing is more available
DrakoniteDev: enjoy the dusting. it is crunch time and i need to get back to work
SquareDotCube: user destructable parts
DrakoniteDev: @omdorastrix yep. two sizes of both genny and cd
loufghyslaufey:
@HorusFive Or nevous; (gasps) "Tinker-Senpai!? Oh dear, oh dear, oh deers! Play cool! Play it cool! Playing cool..."
(while processing, booting up)
MTigress: @omdorastrix lol same thought. there was an extension that attached to the side so there was no overhang
loufghyslaufey: *nervous
DarknessKingCoH: I think it was the crystals changing frequencies.
omdorastrix: Welcome to the 21st century: "I need to charge my X"
goatprince: maybe the screwdriver's broken. time to pivot to working on that
SquareDotCube: Meanwhile the JP/EU version is a side loader that goes under the MD
SquareDotCube: which is a bit nicer
MWGNZ: next on ttsf: upgrading the screwdriver to usb-c
HorusFive: Just start putting those stickers on everything.
loufghyslaufey: Big + Thic = Body Fit (shrugs?)
omdorastrix: Do we think the numbers still work?
SymphonySolstice: good evening all, what is the reason given for doing surgery on this beast?
HorusFive: @omdorastrix I've seen that Crapshot
SquareDotCube: Knuckles the Furniture Mover
omdorastrix: So much empty space!
goatprince: michael says: 'it's actually surprisingly clean for how old it is'
loufghyslaufey:
S E G A
Count when, chat?
MacbethSeemsSus: We will strategically move dust around to fill time.
MTigress: carefully cover the cd laser before blowing out any dust!
iris_of_ether: Now I'm just reminded that I should figure out if I can swap out the (probably) leaky capacitors on my husband's old TurboCD...
omdorastrix: High-frequency vibration more likely
Arclight_Dynamo: Seeing the inside of this thing really drives home how cheaply t was made.
goatprince: dang ian at this rate are you trying to gas up my husband

Driosenth: Casting marks are interesting. It's not economical to serialize part by changing marks each injection, but you can change the lot mark to reflect the batch or source pellets. Then you can get even more detail by the date stamps
tdapenguin: neat
Thefluffiestguineapig: How did we start talking about casting markets?
Driosenth: Ian was pointing them out on the Sega CD's Shell
tdapenguin: there was a production date grid on one of the plastic shells
Thefluffiestguineapig: Are we now talking about prostate dracula?
dagoth__ur_:
i have one of those sega's
TheMerricat: This was made a year after I got out of high school.
iris_of_ether:

ContingentCat: It's 32, 2 years younger than me oh god
MTigress: hey Ian, apparently someone has designed a 3d printable bracket, but no one has yet modelled the actual base extension itself for eliminating the overhang on the model 1 genesis
iris_of_ether: Yeah that could go *bad*
Thefluffiestguineapig: Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah nope
MTigress: might be a neat project to model downt he line
iris_of_ether: Fancy

poipal: @goatprince Just enough color correction to make someone look ill
DrakoniteDev: bodges were very common on consumer devices back then
goatprince:
@poipal normally i do that accidentally
MTigress: several revisions feature that bodge PCB
DrakoniteDev: genesis is notorious for having poor quality caps that need replacing
gnyrinn: Of course NTSC-PAL incompatability was kind of a region lock in many things, although I cannot imagine games being built specifically for each video output.
SnackPak_: neat
Too_Many_Knives: Well done
MWGNZ:

Fruan: Wow
DrakoniteDev: @gnyrinn yep, used to need to different builds with various differences. adoption of 1080p made my life a lot easier
MTigress: bodges are a fact of life with older consoles and games
Manae: I work in R&D, we are CONSTANTLY bodging stuff and rolling it in to the next release
gnyrinn: @DrakoniteDev Eugh! What an absolute bother to have to deal with.
MTigress: Super Famicom MegaMan X (RockMan X) v1.0 famously has a bodge wire on every cart to fix a flawed ram-based copy protection scheme.
DrakoniteDev: genesis did not really have that ability the way nes/snes did. genny games were basically just a pair of ROM chips
Blasteg: Is this our desert bus machine?
Too_Many_Knives: Any mysterious residues?
Juliamon: good lord no
Arclight_Dynamo: Replacing the battery is also not a terrible idea.
tdapenguin: it's matt's parter's @Blasteg
Territan: When they fail, they fail destructively and aggressively.
MTigress: oh there ya go. the board has 'BE2200G02B02' printed on it next to the bodge

Too_Many_Knives: Those would be SMDs now
MTigress: the blue ones taste different
Too_Many_Knives: To a certain extent the physical requirements of being a battery dictate the shape ie: round
Arclight_Dynamo: Yeah, you need to desolder the holder for these things. It sucks.
Juliamon: That's annoying.
DrakoniteDev: soldered in does not mean rechargable
Sethalidos: @goatprince and soon hunting?
gnyrinn: I remember some old-tech-enthusiast mentioning that 90s electronics that are actually not too small and compact for home maintenance are significantly hand-assembled and hand-soldered.
MacbethSeemsSus: Reminder, don't keep your computers on carpet.
goatprince: michael is currently flattered and blushing over your compliments
Juliamon: yeah... my Dreamcast is likely in way worse condition, full of mildew and probably bugs
Juliamon: basement dens in the 80s weren't designed for gaming consoles
LoadingReadyRun:
@Juliamon Dreamcast can be a bit buggy
7gorobei: if you smoke or live somewhere with a real winter, the inside of consoles can be disgusting as insects like the warm interior

7gorobei: some of the psu brands are using the same oem suppliers, so if you know for certain which are rebrands some of the cables can be reused
Thefluffiestguineapig: @iarethel0ser I would argue that violates what "completely interchangeable" means, because that implies repeatability
Doc_Layzah: Good to catch that early
Arclight_Dynamo: Would it be easier to just strip the switch wires and crimp on new MOLEX terminators?
Thefluffiestguineapig: At least you caught it now
tdapenguin: @Thefluffiestguineapig pretty sure @iarethel0ser agrees with you and was making a joke that emphasized the unsutibility of tham as actually interchangeable by saying the 'once'.
jubale1: solder day
iarethel0ser: @tdapenguin Indeed.
Thefluffiestguineapig: @tdapenguin For sure, I just like to emphasize like in the kink community that the idea of "try anything once" should be able to try it twice. You can technically try drinking straight chemo once or cutting off a finger once. It's the same with medications, if they are interchangeable you can swap them without consequence
jubale1: what will be accomplished by todays prject
Thefluffiestguineapig: @jubale1 The goal changed, currently Ian is trying to determine which wires connect to what
Thefluffiestguineapig: So it should be "try anything twice"
tdapenguin: @Thefluffiestguineapig it is a very excellent point
jubale1: @thefluffiestguineapig nondestructive single test
Thefluffiestguineapig: @tdapenguin I have also had a very long day so am being very picky
tdapenguin: @Thefluffiestguineapig understandable. were there any good animals seen today?
Thefluffiestguineapig: @iarethel0ser No offense meant at all, that was absolutely my bad
jubale1: i saw a woodpecker
loufghyslaufey: Woof. I even felt that.
iarethel0ser: @Thefluffiestguineapig None taken in the slightest.

jubale1: this one was knocking in my backyard. never seen that before
Thefluffiestguineapig: @tdapenguin Woodpeckers are hard because they move in very odd patterns I've found and if you aren't in specific regions they are often very crepuscular (early morning and evening) bound time wise
letsbelgo: 2am jst start time. Hell yeah
tdapenguin: @jubale1 super-neato!!!!
Doc_Layzah: Total disrespect for tolarian academy
7 raiders from RavenHillbrookInc have joined!
