PMAvers: it’s gotta enter play in the rank of the level. it’s basically the cost for high level characters, you’ve gotta build it out and they have to slowly work their way to the front lines.
TheMerricat: @CrossXhunteR Back in the old days, before they streamlined it, Armor Class went down instead of up, so AC -1 was actually good and AC 9 meant you were essentially naked. To make things easier everyone had a precalculated value to hit AC 0, then you subtracted the actual AC of the character you were trying to to hit to find the actual value you needed to roll higher than to hit.
