Arclight_Dynamo: Hello friends. :)
DarkMorford: Hi hi~
james____raynor: Howdy
DarkMorford adjusts his chair by about 5°
planeswalkagogo: some kind of home console work was on the docket tonight, yes?
Arclight_Dynamo: The Naomi.
DarkMorford: We're hoping to get the Naomi finished and actually playing a game tonight.
Laogeodritt: Yay for finishing projects
Laogeodritt: ! \o/
Electrodyne: Finishing projects???
Electrodyne: Who even does that
LRRTwitter: @loadingreadyrun> We’re live with Tinker Tailor Solder Fry, hoping to finally finish our Naomi 2 arcade to home console conversion. 📷 ||
DarkMorford: That's a Horner, all right.
Electrodyne: Wait, did we do at least two other projects between Start and Finish? Because then it's okay
SquareDotCube: Does this mean he's a copperhead?
DarkMorford: Looks like a mix of copper, brass, and PVC to me, @SquareDotCube Kappa
Electrodyne: lrrDOTS lrrHAM lrrARROW

AranMathai: And we have sound.

RandomTrivia: Fancy meeting you here.
Laogeodritt: Hi, Ian! I think I haven't caught a TTSF in like... six months
Foxmar320: Hello Ian
RealGamerCow: I am confuse. Why is TTSF on Saturday?
RandomTrivia: There was a special thing on thursday this week
Electrodyne: Twitch awards on Thursday
DarkMorford: Mic could come up just a bit, Ian.
RealGamerCow: I did tune into that for a while and left the window open to give LRR the views
RockPusher: Ian needs no awards. Ian is his own award.
RandomTrivia: The real award is the Ian we built along the way

LadyAiluros: a bunh of the pins are fake
DarkMorford: Some do, but good luck figuring out which ones without slicing them open.
Molladia: We're making Kim-chi today right?
Nigouki: oh right, this project started back in Moonbase Delta
Wrexadecimal: @Nigouki Yeah, it's been a while
usmu1976: Good morning/afternoong/evening/night from the Netherlands to one and all
DandyGeek: o no
RandomTrivia: Wow, that is very specialist
RealGamerCow: It'
DarkMorford: Oh, breakout boards are fun. But good luck with those 19 HDMI pins.
RealGamerCow: It's an HDMI to...stuff connector
RockPusher: are we commiting cable-crimes?
RandomTrivia: This definitely feels like a cable-crime
Wrexadecimal: @RockPusher mad science
Laogeodritt: aren't HDMI usually 0.5 or 0.65mm pitch pins? That's gonna be fun to solder
Manae: Phoenix connectors are great for prototyping, but make sure your wires are nice and tight
DarkMorford: @Laogeodritt I don't know the spec, but they tiny.
LadyAiluros: weird science!
RandomTrivia: This is a "was never meant to be" kind of connection
usmu1976: I've got no clue, but it looks very interesting.
Nigouki: so next project: 3D printing a hoop gear to put on the camera lens to zoom from streaming deck?
Laogeodritt: Oh, that looks like a through-hole HDMI connector at least
RockPusher: eh, I've had switches that used HDMI cables for stacking, can't really complain too much
RealGamerCow: raking-soldering still gets my hackles up beacause it was beaten into me not to do that.
Laogeodritt: easier than SMD connectors, the gullwings on those are usually REALLY hard to access (often shield/other bits in the way of a soldering iron)
DarkMorford: Yeah. If it was SMD it'd be hell. Instead it'll just be a nightmare. ;)
RealGamerCow: Ian, is there a target use for the fight-stick when you're done?
RockPusher: These are not the pins you're looking for...

blackwolf80076: hi
james____raynor: Ian do you like hokuto no ken?
RomanGoro: Ian, when you look down you're very off mic, it's hard to understand you
Manae: I do feel like doing solder cups on a DB15 would be simpler than having to do this HDMI

RadicalAns: what we building?
RandomTrivia: We trust you to know better?
Celebrate_V_C: mail time was from January
Arclight_Dynamo: I think it's just a given that TTSF ideas are bad ideas? Kappa
oyleslyck: it's an idea. if it's good or bad has yet to be determined.
Molladia: I've never seen you follow-through on a bad idea.
Laogeodritt: Ian: my one comment is make sure you don't hand this to anyone else to wire up the external stuff, using an HDMI connector risks that someone plugs one a regular HDMI device in and damages one or both pieces of equipment =P
Arclight_Dynamo: This sounds like an opportunity for a very nice WARNING label next to the HDMI port on the fight sticks.
Serpens77: I work with payment terminals/pinpads, and we have a bunch of models that use HDMI connectors
DarkMorford: I don't love the idea of re-purposing specialty connectors in general (for exactly @Laogeodritt's reason) but I have a feeling this one will be okay.
bytecaster: Yeah, that's why I would be very upset to see this on a bought device (like when people use RJ11 or audio jack for charging), but for a hobby project, why not
Molladia: that flat edge is so handy
RadicalAns: I have synth modules that use hdmi as a means to pass 16ish analog signals between cases
Wrexadecimal: Yes, all-in on fancy warning label
Qvdv: Arclight_Dynamo are we presuming people read warning labels?
Molladia: Reminder, Has work begun on RDP button?
TheAwkes: TRS
Molladia: thats good enough
Arclight_Dynamo: @Qvdv Hopefully yes. If not... well, then you get to say "This is clearly labelled, what is *wrong* with you, James?" Kappa
RadicalAns: I've seen consumer devices that use TRS for serial data
DarkMorford: Yeah, you and I need to have a chat pretty soon, Ian.
Wrexadecimal: I'm intrigued to see how the button will be handled this year
indigohaze: Doing a quick check..... looks like DB15 2-row cable is about $16 so depending on the cost of these HDMI adapters it's actually more cost-effective to do it this way, even if it's a harder build....
Corners___: Hiya Ian!
ZackTheCatKing: New here, who's Naomi? What you're building?
Celebrate_V_C: offcam
Qvdv: Arclight_Dynamo I suppose warning label design might in itself be a fun endeavor
Laogeodritt: @DarkMorford For professional stuff, there's SO MANY board-to-wire connectors out there that there's no reason to use standardised ones for custom interconnects
Manae: Off-cam
Wrexadecimal: Noami is our beautiful electronic gameplaying waifu - the sgea naomi arcade board
Arclight_Dynamo: @ZackTheCatKing The Naomi is the guts of the Dreamcast-equivalent Sega arcade system.
ZackTheCatKing: Ahh thanks!
QuantumTwitch: The piece was off cam so it didn't happen
LadyAiluros: redonk hard to emulate so cool to have one
tecywiz121: Why choose an HDMI connector over a DSUB?
Laogeodritt: @DarkMorford that said, I love abusing cat5e/cat6 cables with custom connectors for quick assemblies. It's so cheap for eight conductors, four UTPs or any combination htereof
Wrexadecimal: Still need to drop the terraonion SSD mod into my dreamcast >_>
RadicalAns: hdmi Carrie's more signals
RadicalAns: carrys
Manae: There MIGHT be some bridging between the rows on that one end
Manae: but hard to see over a camera
bytecaster: @Laogeodritt Yeah that is what I often don't get about these things that just scream, lets have an electrical fire by using a connector that is normally used for data for charging etc.
tecywiz121: Ah, that makes sense! Are you doing it with one switch to one wire, or are you doing something like I2C?
kusinohki: I still have "one more" as stream title
Wrexadecimal: video over cat5 tho
ContingentCat: @kusinohki sometimes Twich is lazy about refreshing the title, try refreshing it's TTSF for me
kusinohki: prolly just me then
Celebrate_V_C: title's fine
QuantumTwitch: @kusinohki yes title is fine
kusinohki: yep, just me. refresh fixed title
Laogeodritt: @kusinohki Probably need to refresh on your end? Twitch stream titles tend to stick if you keep the page open
RandomTrivia: I've said this before, but TTSF is my favourite educational ASMR stream
TheAwkes: Laogeodritt my new favourite use for those cables is pyrotechnics. You can run 4 isoated squibs, or more if they're small enough to gang together. Really cuts down on running cables with a little planning ahead.
Laogeodritt: today on TTSF: Intermediate Integer Counting with Ian Horner
Molladia: BTW Happy Fathers day to those in chat it applies to.
RandomTrivia: Duly noted
RadicalAns: next week I will be attempting SMD soldering for the first time. I'm quite scared
DarkMorford: @Laogeodritt Yeah. If it's something that's strictly in-house and you're the only one who's gonna use it, do what you want. But for the love of bus do NOT send something into the wild that uses a consumer-standard connector for anything other than that consumer standard.
kusinohki: we can't allow accidental learning here!
Mysticman89: part of the slogan explicit forbades learning
Arclight_Dynamo: Look, just use a standard wall outlet for a data interface. Kappa

ContingentCat: being surprised by kittens is good, by electrical fires, less os
ContingentCat: *so
RadicalAns: TRS midi connectors are a the latest reappropreation of a connector I've seen in consumer devices
bytecaster: I mean, there is a solution that does LAN over standard wall outlet ....
indigohaze: I'm still irritated by former co-workers that thought that using a DB25 to RJ45 connector changed a 9600bps serial connection to ethernet. So many people in need of strangling. ;)
DarkMorford: @Arclight_Dynamo I mean, most extension cords are 16/3 or 14/3. Why not use NEMA 5-15s to carry your speaker signals? Kappa
mitomanox: Ian has neat nails
Laogeodritt: @RadicalAns If you're comfortable with through-hole, then it's an adaptation but it's not too bad! Jus tmake sure you've looked up the technique.
Manae: And now's when you discover the phoenix connectors are backwards
JaysonMaxwell: Just tuning in - what are the HDMIs for then?
tecywiz121: @JaysonMaxwell Connecting controllers to arcade machine, I think.
RadicalAns: @laogeodritt I have been reading up. I'm making a GB flash cart. I'm excited
indigohaze: Alternative to DB15 connectors because the proposed VGA cables don't usually carry all 15 pins across.
kusinohki: Ian for tribal shaman in the post apocolypse!
Laogeodritt: I'm curious whether the differential transmission lines and the screw terminals would permit good enough signal integrity to carry 1080p or 4K
RadicalAns: time to ring it out!
Laogeodritt: doesn't look like more than 5cm conductor length...

LadyAiluros: @bytecaster yeah that too
Arclight_Dynamo: Ah! It turns out that a lot of people, especially women with lower education, have difficulty reading normal tests. Digital readouts solve that problem, and reduce misreadings by about 20%.

Arclight_Dynamo: @ogier300 Yes, Sept. 19th.
Wrexadecimal: @Arclight_Dynamo how about electronic cackling, I imagine zworch is more like something catching fire, which is p. bad. lol.
ogier300: Ah, cool - I'll have to "book" that day now.
TheAwkes: Arclight_Dynamo pop is usually a small component death or a fuse. Zworches are for big shorts, they're almost always worse.
rrtycoon2: I'd say zwworch...pop may only be a cap giving out.
ShaneLeeAtk: And Cam is starting at 5AM, to match the Le Mans.
kusinohki: @Arclight_Dynamo will that be on LRR channel or tiltyhouse??
Celebrate_V_C: @Arclight_Dynamo on a closed case that you cannot open up POP is usually worse in my experience
Arclight_Dynamo: @Wrexadecimal Ohh, I was thinking, like, the noise of one of thsoe Jacob's ladder things. *Fwoosh!* is fire. :P
DarkMorford: Welp. Good job, me. x_x
Arclight_Dynamo: @kusinohki LRR!

ShaneLeeAtk: Double check a known working circuit
kusinohki: battery in the screwdriver??
DarkMorford: @LoadingReadyRun The plug labeled "10A" is for high-current measurements. For voltage you want COM and the port on the right.
Laogeodritt: Ian, I think red probe is in the high current ammeter input, rather than the voltmeter input on the right
KingXicor: it's not right., the red lead needs to go on the other side. you're plugged into the high current ammeter at the mopment

ShaneLeeAtk: Yes, if your network is 192.168.1.x, your laptop may have been giving your router a complex.
ShaneLeeAtk: If they share the .1
Twilight_Spark: Makes sense, I wouldn't use the low 192.168.1.<blah>'s for much anything if they're not being assigned by a router.
bytecaster: @Amserin I had forgotten we were still connected to the internet for streaming purposes.
RealGamerCow: There was an engineer where I work who set a device to because "My computer is"

SquareDotCube: noooo siggg nallll
CorruptDropbear: This is not right. It should have a percentage on screen
Wrexadecimal: what's the speed on your naomi's port? 10 mb? 100? 1000?
RockPusher: The Naomi appears to be rebooting at the start of the send?
Celebrate_V_C: ope it's back
CorruptDropbear: BROKEN PIPE
Armyguy0: some one call mario
Anaerin: It's crashing. Try a different rom?
e_bloc: time to call a plumber
atoptygin5325: Packet loss?
MWGNZ: elfunkSad
CorruptDropbear: Naomi seems to be rebooting whenever you send.
InTheLandOfTheRisingSun: This is exactly like the first time I tried to hack my PS Vita
RockPusher: different ROM is worth a shot too
TheRaggedNoble: This is just like one of my Japanese animes.
bytecaster: Maybe try a different rom and see if it stops at the same byte offset?
ShaneLeeAtk: At leasgt you know there is some communication occurring.
InTheLandOfTheRisingSun: The solution there was "Wait 2 weeks and try again"
bytecaster: Could there be something wrong on the ethernet level, like a speed negotiation or duplex mismatch?
CorruptDropbear: have you tried turning it off and on again Kappa
bytecaster: I agree!
MWGNZ: might even be something like an MTU mismatch?
delta__vee: if the ping at least stopped eventually saying "host is down" that would confirm that the network is working at all
bytecaster: Just trauma from an old debugging job where at the end it turned out to be something like that.
e_bloc: splorts jam
MWGNZ: same byte offset as the last rom
Arclight_Dynamo: Dumb question: is the patch cable good?
adelius3: I know a guy at a "tobacco" accesseries shop who can help with pipes
atoptygin5325: OK, so TCPIP should have a send window, right?
Laogeodritt: same byte offset suggests it might be ROM-independent - problem could be timing- or buffer-size-based
atoptygin5325: So the byte offset doesn't mean it's failing at a particylar location
atoptygin5325: Just that that number of bytes was sent
atoptygin5325: Without a receipt ack
atoptygin5325: Or am I barking mad?
bytecaster: I should go to bet, but this is riveting!
delta__vee: @atoptygin5325, yeah, you're right
delta__vee: and reading the source code, it is using tcp
Arclight_Dynamo: Is there an error code?
Anaerin: What's your firmware version?
Anaerin: And I presume you have a zero key.
MWGNZ: fire up a linux vm and route the network interface to it?
bytecaster: Likely not clang compatible, and is the gcc version on macOs old because of GPL?
Bladinus: sugars5Eff
atoptygin5325: Nice
LadyAiluros: what OSX are you on?
Blasteg: Ramen?
MWGNZ: do you have easy access to a non-Mac computer with a network port?
LadyAiluros: Mojave I know gets int eh way of appls asking the system stuff
LadyAiluros: oooooof
bytecaster: The rom offset value is curious, isn't it?
LadyAiluros: I have ... opinions ... on Cataliina
bytecaster: Because that is where it always fails
Anaerin: Interesting, it seems you're not the only one with this issue:
Earthenone: based on your lego streams i was almost expecting
Tantar: Catalina is the bane of my existance
Wrexadecimal: friggin' catalina
LadyAiluros: Catalina is hot straight garbage
Arclight_Dynamo: Some Googling suggests ending your IPs in .3 or .4 might work for some unknown, arcane reason.
LadyAiluros: Are you using OpenCore?
SSnakeAce: I like that the other person having this issue is also named Ian
LadyAiluros: No way to downgrade to Mojave?
AranMathai: The ancient historian in me is having so much fun with people crapping on Catalina right now.
LadyAiluros is planting a flag on Mojave and staying there
CorruptDropbear: From Dynamo - change the IP to .3 or .4?
Mysticman89: that would be some deep arcana
e_bloc: have we tried burning a sonic the hedgehog doll in effigy
shamrocksheik: "ah, right here, it says the last IP digit has to be even. huh."
Armyguy0: networking is deep arcana
Armyguy0: thats all i know about it
RockPusher: lrrIAN PowerUpR RPGFireball rayfkSanic
bytecaster: This seems like exactly the kind of thing that might work and is the kind of arcane knowledge only whispered by arcade support techs.
CorruptDropbear: jet set radio wasn't on naomi
shamrocksheik: I am 10000% joking
bytecaster: And you still might yet be correct.
ShaneLeeAtk: Layer 2 of a network fabric is a truly magical thing.
Mysticman89: well, 2 is even. but maybe it has to be even *and* prime
Mysticman89: er, not prime
CorruptDropbear: Could be because .1 is for router, .2 for host computer sending roms, .3-255 for cabinets recieving :U
LadyAiluros: Hackiintosh yuuus
LadyAiluros: Lookign into that
Gerbelizer: I've just only come into here. I work in the arcade industry, you trying to netboot? Would you like to run through the list of things you have in place? DIMM Fimwares, Keychip you are using, etc... You seem like you know what you're doing, but I will try and help if I can.
RockPusher: Russian un-hacks
RealGamerCow: I ran into one of those arcane network things this week. Turns out that if you add more than 3 vmxnet3 network cards to VMWare, they no longer correlate to the correct number network card in the OS. NIC1 becomes NIC2, 2 becomes 1, 3 is 4, and 4 is 3.
ContingentCat: what could go wrong?
Anaerin: Put yourself as 2, and the NAOMI as 4?
DarkMorford: @LoadingReadyRun Ian, do you know what version your NetDimm is? Looks like the script only likes 1.07, 2.03, 2.15, or 3.01
Electrodyne: Have we checked for voltage drop across the WOM chips?
RockPusher: DarkMorford I saw that too but I think it might be a red herring
DarkMorford: @RockPusher I think it might be a hardware revision, not firmware.
Electrodyne: I sure am. Write-Only Memory isn't used much
Electrodyne: lrrCREEPL lrrCREEPR
ShifuDaxiongmao: is the desktop background to illustrate your mental state after this? :P
RockPusher: DarkMorford the author didn't comment on the issue that was linked that the firmware version was a problem - they could have missed it but the poster was clear what they were running
Tantar: try all the numbers, can't go wrong
Gerbelizer: @DarkMorford that might be it. That seems like the corret firmware, and you are using a zero keychip so should work. I am going to assume the stupid thing that the DIMM board is plugged into the mainboard, (and you only had it on camera by unplugging to show us). What error code is the mainboard givin you?
DoodlestheGreat: That looks like the carpeting for a Holiday Inn in the 1980's
AranMathai: Didn't you make the Naomi .2?
atoptygin5325: Holy jezus
Anaerin: DoodlestheGreat It's the carpet from the Outlook Inn in The Shining
Anaerin: Overlook, I should say
Arclight_Dynamo: @Gerbelizer The problem is taht when he goes to upload the ROM, the Naomi rebooots. No code given.
Anaerin: The upload process gets to 0x00040000 and the Naomi crashes and reboots.
atoptygin5325: How big is the rom?
Gerbelizer: ah... yeah it could be the uploader script perhaps. My level of working with the SEGA satellite hardware is limited, was never really used much in Australia. A good question is how much RAM does the DIMM have installed, and how large is the ROM you are loading?
atoptygin5325: (please just call me alex, my name is unpronounceable)
Gerbelizer: At only 84mb is very small... minimum dimm should be 128mb anyway
atoptygin5325: Do you have a debugger?
atoptygin5325: Errno 32 sounds like a generic wrapper for an uncaught error?
Gerbelizer: I feel like I am at work, trying to give support on arcade hardware.
bytecaster: Yeah, that should just be the error for the network socket disconnecting because the console reboots.
Anaerin: Test passed?
bytecaster: I don't python much though
GreayStone: I like mint
Wrexadecimal: @Gerbelizer your service is appreciated wrexadDAB
atoptygin5325: @bytecaster I'm not quite yet sold on which happens first, the socket closing or the console resetting?
Gerbelizer: @Wrexadecimal no worries, anything for the LRR crew.
atoptygin5325: Like, what's the correct behavior at the end of the rom load?
Anaerin: The correct behaviour is that the send gets to 100%, the Naomi reboots and loads the game from the NetDIMM
e_bloc: doesnt it get to 48000
MWGNZ: looked like reboot happens before offset stops increasing?
e_bloc: or am I just misreading things
MWGNZ: but that might just be stream delay stuff
atoptygin5325: @Anaerin So then, it may just be that the game cabinet is rebooting correctly and not finding a complete rom
Wrexadecimal: because of how crossover signals things
ShifuDaxiongmao: crossover ethernet cable? that takes me WAY back..
Anaerin: e_bloc It gets to 40000 and crashes. Then the Naomi reboots and the laptop tries to send 48000, which fails.
CorruptDropbear: if it doesn't need a crossover... hoooo boy
Wrexadecimal: Autonegotiate has been a thing for a loong time now. lol.
Arclight_Dynamo: So we were... double crossed? Kappa
Gerbelizer: Is the DIMM connected to the computer or a switch?
e_bloc: @Anaerin ahh ty
Laogeodritt: if the crossover was at issue, I would think it'd fail at the network level, not the application level like this. (also autonegotiation but I dunno what hardware the naomi has)
bytecaster: @Gerbelizer Direct Connection
Wrexadecimal: hrmn
Anaerin: The laptop might autonegociate but the Naomi doesn't. Shouldn't be a problem, though.
atoptygin5325: Cause we don't know what tcpip flags are set, are we PSH the packets out or are they being buffered causing the request on the Naomi to time out?
Agnememnon: is this over http?
atoptygin5325: Like, it's network hell. Do we have a packet sniffer?
Celebrate_V_C: seems to tick to like 56000 and then fail
Gerbelizer: if it is direct connection then yeah crossover,. The DIMM wont MDI-X auto crossover, (although the PC might depending on the NIC chipset).
Agnememnon: just install wireshark and watch it
Wrexadecimal: as my team lead has said before - networking is black magic :P
Anaerin: Agnememnon No, it's direct TCP.
Dr_Noonian_Soong: Can you ping?
Gerbelizer: You have tried a different ROM yeah?
atoptygin5325: Just to be clear, I'm not implying this is a hardware network issue (random), this could be a software stack issue (but still network related)
Manae: Not necessarily. The 40% might be the "read" part of the send, then when it's pinging to try and actually push it you have the error
MWGNZ: Gerbelizer yup, multiple roms
Anaerin: Yes, we started with Guilty Gear X, which did the same thing.
RockPusher: The Naomi key is definitely nulled?
Gerbelizer: its sounding more and more like a PC side script loader problem
Electrodyne: PC Load letter??
delta__vee: go to and use the download
bytecaster: Windows Store has official python I think now?
Laogeodritt: re: python on win10, download the installer off the python website =P
Blasteg: go to python website?
DarkMorford:, grab the installer?
Agnememnon: just install the windows 10 linux subsystem
ShaneLeeAtk: PC LOAD LETTER?! What does that even mean?!?
Laogeodritt: I think it comes with setuptools and pip nowadays too (back in the 2.x days you had to download 'em separately...)
Celebrate_V_C: you can get it in the windows store
bytecaster: But WSL1/2 both introduce new unique network indirections that might make things tricky?
Gerbelizer: can you get a docker with the scripter ready loaded? There is a dedicated Raspberry Pi image for this too, with a built in web server for selecting the game from a webbrowser from your phone)
Anaerin: It's the community version.
Anaerin: So if you type "python" in the cmd it'll take you right to it (provided you're running May 2019 or higher)
e_bloc: maybe you need an 8th raspberry pi
Arclight_Dynamo: Steal a Pi from LRR. Stealing from work is where Pis come from. Kappa
Celebrate_V_C: definitely need more pi's Kappa
Gerbelizer: What kind of WiFi are you using that is not compatible? thats interesting... also what time is it where you are? Melbourne Australia here is 1pm
Raiger: inb4 mailbag is flooded with new pis :D
Arclight_Dynamo: Ian is PST, so it is 8:00 PM.
JaysonMaxwell: !updog
LRRbot: The stream has been live for 20:28:04. lrrSPOT
ashiok_nightmare_moose: linux subsystem is just turning on 2 windows features, if you feel like it
Electrodyne: Pis and flexible displays to make masks that can say "Sorry".
bytecaster: You can just cancel I think and it still installs
Earthenone: pride51
Celebrate_V_C: we're on 3.9 now? i just switched from 2.7
ShifuDaxiongmao: we only drove you a little bit crazy.. :P
