LRRbot: Next scheduled stream: Tinker Tailor Solder Fry (With two successful projects under his belt, Ian goes back to the Dreamcast to poke everything he can to replace the BIOS.) at Thu 05:00 PM PDT (40s from now).
Earthenone: lrrSIGNAL
Juliamon: Title's wrong.
TotallyNotaBeholder: James Challenges chat to make us feel good, he knows what he's doing
TotallyNotaBeholder: He's also still going to lose
Arclight_Dynamo: Interesting... I haven't seen how this works before. I can only throw in 2000 per stream, huh?
aerohydra: yes
Juliamon: Yeah, it's Twitch's limit
aerohydra: twitch limit, not done by James
Arclight_Dynamo: Decent retention mechanic.
Arclight_Dynamo: Also... I think James deeply underestimated how quickly this will happen.
Juliamon: Also it's "per day" except Twitch assumes people stream only once a day.
Arclight_Dynamo: Ah. Noted.
Juliamon: So we have accidentally betatested it.
Juliamon: And now we know.
aerohydra: accidental beta test, the best kind of beta test
LRRTwitter: @loadingreadyrun> It’s time for Tinker Tailor Solder Fry, and Ian feels like pushing his luck in the Project Completion Year, so he’s diving back into the Dreamcast BIOS replacement! http://twitch.tv/LoadingReadyRun 📷 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EjSEfXEU4AE9w2f.jpg || https://www.twitter.com/loadingreadyrun/status/1311819072040964097
Juliamon: (Also you can't edit a challenge once it's started, you have to cancel the whole thing and remake it)
Arclight_Dynamo: Flightstick.
Arclight_Dynamo: Yaaas.
aerohydra: i am excited for that
Arclight_Dynamo: Troubleshooting: The Stream
WalrusOntheCourt: Blame James
Blasteg: Living the dream!... cast
Mikklun: TTSF and a Manhattan is a good way to end a day like today
Arclight_Dynamo: Because this seems like that sort of crowd: Today is the first day of the 2020 Interactive Fiction Competition! I'm not affiliated, I just like the games, and maybe you will too!
ashiok_nightmare_moose: @LoadingReadyRun a person I follow on twitter is playing Star Wars right now w hotas, apparently had to remap the controls, so maybe give yourself some setup time
ashiok_nightmare_moose: (vpn to new zealand)
Arclight_Dynamo: Aw, yeah, that resistor looks a *lot* bettwer than the first one you put on there, just... lankly dangling.
PixelArtDragon: Oh hey, aren't those the ones from Mail Time?

CoffeeTime88: How's it going? Also, what's the project today?
TheAwkes: Yes, Nigouki. It's a very noisy image.
Arclight_Dynamo: You know, if you find yourself using the magnifiers a lot, you might want to look into getting some surgical loupes for the sake of comfort and effectiveness: https://www.loupedirect.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/840x566/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/img_9055_1_5.jpg
Arclight_Dynamo: I've seen some for around $50 I think.
Nigouki: twitch skimping out on the bitrate?
TheAwkes: The lighting change did make a real difference.
Fruan: Oh! Are those the ridiculous goggles from mail time?
Electrodyne: Hi tinker friends
Electrodyne: Are we soldermizing these components tonight?
voslan: A white Play station?
WalrusOntheCourt: Booting.... Skynet?!?
Arclight_Dynamo: Wow, yeah, looking at Amazon, clip-on surgical loupes go for about $45 CAD.
2Flower: f o r b i d d e n
WalrusOntheCourt: Genesis is Planet Forbidden!!!
ArdCollider: dreamcast FK
InTheLandOfTheRisingSun: Ian! I see the dreamcast is still being worked on!
WalrusOntheCourt: I'm hoping that when it works, there is a screen saying "Bidden" before access is granted.
Arclight_Dynamo: Remind me, chat. Was this the very first TTSF project, or was it the kegerator?
Arclight_Dynamo: Neat!
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I'm sad I missed watching the last Naomi stream live. If you want to do any other arcade stuff in the future, I am the head tech at an arcade and may or may not be able to help. I could probably even get you parts!
InTheLandOfTheRisingSun: lrrHAM
Mattmitchell45: Where does assembling Moonbase furniture fall on that timeline?
Arclight_Dynamo: "arcing" would be seriously bad. :D
TwitchTVsFrank: fine
Arclight_Dynamo: Sound is good.
ContingentCat: sounds good
ContingentCat: I haven't noticed any nudging sounds
TwitchTVsFrank: jlrrPunch
ContingentCat: jlrrPunch ?
TheWriterAleph: jlrrPunch
Manae: Did I miss the last Naomi stream, or was it decided fighting with firm and software alone wasn't worthy of a stream on its own?
odhtate: jlrrPunch
ritchards: jlrrPunch
Arclight_Dynamo: Man. Clear plastic case on the VGA adaptor. Deep Nineties.
odhtate: I missed the start of the stream, what is Ian working on?
Arclight_Dynamo: @odhtate Ian is troubleshooting the Dreamcast, and trying to make it work.
Arclight_Dynamo: We need to diagnose, first.
odhtate: cool! thanks @Arclight_Dynamo

NarwhalsInATrenchcoat: There's an echo on this scene
ritchards: speaking of source...
WalrusOntheCourt: Ian is a God...
BaronSnow: Ian with all the reverb
nox__invictus: Multiplying Ians!
WalrusOntheCourt: Say, "BeeeeeejLander!!!!!"
62MGcobra: ok ok
Kazman20a: the reverb is amazing
tim19862: if Ever Forward had a god... :D
ritchards: @LoadingReadyRun you have two sound sources coming through
WalrusOntheCourt: with this free reverb, I'm telling you "Beeejlander!!!"
Easilycrazyhat: Nice
tim19862: SeemsGood
Nigouki: boop successful
hold_no_carter: No! Bring back the doubled audio
WalrusOntheCourt: Opportunity lost! :-)
Robot_Bones: I'm hearing double, 4 Ians
ContingentCat: oh good singular Ian
TheAwkes: A fix both fast and easy. How uncharacteristic for this show.
tim19862: HahaThink
Blasteg: yeah. sounds like a plan
PixelArtDragon: I regret that I have but 2,000 points (per stream) to give
TwitchTVsFrank: lol
GhostValv: :)
Alephred: What a strange place to keep eggs.
hold_no_carter: hooray! we have video!
TheWriterAleph: gladly. 1998 was great
NarwhalsInATrenchcoat: Oh god, what a time to be alive, I can go and see my friends!
Nigouki: i'm pretty sure i'll actually drop below 400k through this challenge, just when I was about to reach the magical 420k
hold_no_carter: Ian, I like to pretend it's 1998 most of the time
62MGcobra: quick put money in google
Nigouki: it's also a shame that twitch only hands out points in odd increments, so getting 420,069 isn't possible :(
WalrusOntheCourt: We're living in the future! Dreamcast, welcome to obsolescence
WalrusOntheCourt: It's hypnotizing us!!!! Run!!!

ExpeditionToGamesEnd: This is what I found.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: "The "+ Boot Loader" version looks for all the DreamShell files on the SD card so that's why it won't boot. You'll want the regular "DreamShell 4.0 RC 4 CDI Image" which has all the files on the disc if you want to get any further without the SD card reader."
NarwhalsInATrenchcoat: @TheMoatman oooh, new build entirely? or just an upgrade?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I'm trying to remember what boot disc I used for my bootleg MvC 2 back in 2002.
Arclight_Dynamo: Could be worse. Could be 2002 and burning a disc would take 45 minutes...
Dasbananas: what is this dreamcast bios?
MTigress: whats a cd
WalrusOntheCourt: certificate of deposit?
ElementalAlchemist: "I'm going away, but you're not allowed." --ian
Ivalenz_: !break
LRRbot: Remember chat, break time for the streamer, means break time for YOU, so get up, stretch, walk about a bit, and maybe get a drink or go to the toilet. Don't forget to wash your hands!
Dasbananas: cooldown i think
TheMoatman: @NarwhalsInATrenchcoat I wish I could have just upgraded, my current PC is from 2014. I just went and did a full replacement
LarkSachrosis: Thrill as Ian tricks a rock into thinking!
NarwhalsInATrenchcoat: @MTigress it's a physical medium, where we edit the surface of a reflective material to store information.
Arclight_Dynamo: A CD is like a floppy, but shinier.
TheMoatman: Only things making the switch are my graphics card (1060 that I upgraded to in 2017), my 140mm case fans, and my drives
62MGcobra: it wont help you to know i've got 5 blank cd's here
MTigress: oh you mean a laserdisc, gotcha
TheMoatman: And the only reason I'm swapping the fans is because they're magnetic bearing fans and those are expensive
justthorne: are they on a break or starting late?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Whatever boot disc I used to use, I'm pretty sure let me do it without modification.
MTigress: he's temporarily afk to acquire precision cd burning powers
Juliamon: !uptime
LRRbot: The stream has been live for 39:04.
justthorne: ah, got it
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: But that was a swap disc for using burned games.
AegeusEvander: it also doesn't help but I have sata to usb cirSlain

AegeusEvander: okay good now
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: It's funny you mentioned a bad laser earlier, because GD-rom lasers are actually fairly prone to failure.
ashiok_nightmare_moose: those toasters have supplemental power right?
Arclight_Dynamo: Where's your "no physical disc drive" NOW, Horner? Kappa
62MGcobra: so now we are making a thing to make a thing to run the dreamcast
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: The only time I've ever opened a Dreamcast was to steal a laser to fix a bad Naomi GD-rom.
62MGcobra: hey i have that screwdriver set
Anaerin: Doesn't hooked up. Unlike Ian, who does hecked up. :D
Anaerin: Brute force and massive ignorance?
62MGcobra: cover those contacts?
LarkSachrosis: What is this device
heronblademaster: oh neat, I have a NexStar hard drive dock right here, different model though
Anaerin: This device is a USB "Toaster" to plug in SATA hard-drives.
Anaerin: It's being stripped down to fit on a CD-R drive.
MTigress: lol perfect
LarkSachrosis: Neat!
Juliamon: this'll be... fun
LarkSachrosis: If it works it's not dumb.
ElementalAlchemist: Completely not sketchy.
Anaerin: CD drives can stand vertically, don't have to be horizontal.
MTigress: you can run the burner on it's side
Nigouki: yeah was about to say i'm pretty sure they work sideways
Fruan: The only part of the CD drive that operated by gravity is its interface with the table.
62MGcobra: I hope those bare contacts on the pcb don't short

Arclight_Dynamo: You'll shoot your eye out, kid.
MTigress: just take apart the usb connector and solder directly to the USB slot
62MGcobra: better just get everything
RandomTrivia: Whoops, almost forgot this was on. Evening everyone
ashiok_nightmare_moose: i could use a good inventory cleanup, finally ditched my IDE and parallel cables
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Yeah. The Dreamcast was busted wide open very early.
Anaerin: Djont even worry about it, comrade!
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Hence the existence of post-mortem Dreamcast games like Radirgy.
Arclight_Dynamo: Your soldering iron even runs Tetris.
Anaerin: `whoami`
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: So you do or don't have the SD card reader?
ContingentCat: that sounds like a very Ian name
Anaerin: Or alternatively `uname -rn
Anaerin: uname -n even
Ivalenz_: BSG or RD?
Arclight_Dynamo: @ExpeditionToGamesEnd I think he had an oopsie at some point and it never functioned.
Ivalenz_: Red Dwarf
Ivalenz_: Triton
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Ahh.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: So what's the goal with Dreamshell? Replacing the GD-Rom with a hard drive?
MechaKuuga: wasn't the original BSG considered a flop, lost the network a lot of money?
Arclight_Dynamo: Did 1980 get made?
Baldrash: 1980 did get made.
Ivalenz_: Always cheaper to shoot sci-fi in the present day. No expensive sets.
ElementalAlchemist: goodbye CD-R
WalrusOntheCourt: I was alive in 1980. It wasn't made. Manimal was made.
DeM0nFiRe: WutFace
CoffeeTime88: Good luck Ian! You got this!
Arclight_Dynamo: Ah! I was thinking of this, which did not get made: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica:_The_Second_Coming
ElementalAlchemist: Oh, I love DLL hell!
ElementalAlchemist: :r
WalrusOntheCourt: "battlestar galactica 1980" was made. It was almost as bad as manimal.

TheAwkes: It's making me feel a bit on edge.
ElementalAlchemist: OK, good, the injected mid-roll ads didn't rebreak the stream the same way injected opening ads do
hold_no_carter: @myrddinthewizard hello!! lrrAWESOME
Mysticman89: I literally burned a cd once, as I experimented with the effect of microwaves on optical disks.
Arclight_Dynamo: My dad did IT for the Canadian government. So he was talking about "worm drives" in 1994.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I remember having a Zip Disk.
Nigouki: remember how you could burn an entire season of anime in real media format onto 650MB? god that quality was awful
heronblademaster: pretty sure my dad has a Jaz drive in a drawer somewhere
ShaneLeeAtk: 3 seconds!
TheAwkes: Once we had towers of 100 CDs for $40, it was all fair game with those disks of plastic and foil.
Hexy_Lexy234: hey Ian and Chat! hope yall are doing well <3
niccus: it's still cool
mercano82: If anyone wants to see what it looks liike, LRR made two "Fun with Microwave" videos way back in the day; I think they were one of the first bits if LRR media I saw.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Pretty sure I still have a few CDs around with like 25 episodes on each.
ashiok_nightmare_moose: nearly all the early anime i watched was real media garbo
ElementalAlchemist: They made a third one later, but the CD was in one of the first two
ContingentCat: katesBread
ashiok_nightmare_moose: I paid way too much for half decently burned stuff
Anaerin: It's fine, unless you're SubWay apparently.
e_bloc: it turns out you can no longer get that bread in Ireland because it is mostly sugar
Hexy_Lexy234: i dont *think* its a bad term? plz corrent if im wrong
Bobtheninjagoldfish: Bread is English slang for money. It's Whyming slag of "Bread and honey"
Hexy_Lexy234: correct*
Donutholez: IT'S ALIVE
Bobtheninjagoldfish: *Rhyming sland.
2Flower: I miss 1998.
hold_no_carter: Nah, it's a very positive thing
Bobtheninjagoldfish: Also hello everyone
cuttlefishman: Wow
Nigouki: i definitely still have a few seasons of Ranma ½ .rm on CD-Rs somewhere, and the only reason I remember is that I dug them up when the Ranma BDs came out in Japan to do a pointless but hilarious quality comparison
cuttlefishman: That Sailor Business reference
thefileclerk: but sir. it is Christmas morning 1998
cuttlefishman: way to show off your nerd cred
Hexy_Lexy234: i was 5 in '98 and i remember bits and pieces of that year
cuttlefishman: I think a lot of people get it
Bobtheninjagoldfish: Bread is English slang for money. It's Rhyming slag of "Bread and honey" so "lets get that bread" is Let's make money"
cuttlefishman: People like Sailor Business
MTigress: that's the best way to do things. the people that get it get it

Durzo_Blint_: Hey Ian Have you ever seen David Bull on youtube? He's the Bob Ross of Japanese woodblock printing and is the guy who did the Ukiyp-e heroes collection. His content is so relaxing and so cool

ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I found a pretty thorough Dreamshell FAQ if you want the link. It is of course a .ru site.
NarwhalsInATrenchcoat: Woo! We're moving forwards!
bainard656: The Dreamcast really is Ian’s White Whale, isn’t it?
Anaerin: Ian's white, abs-coated whale.
Durzo_Blint_: his twitch is "japaneseprintmaking"
Nicarrow: ok i jsut got here what are we doing
Durzo_Blint_: I'm on a mission to tell everyone about him because his stuff is so amazing

ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Next step: Dreamcast HD Mod.

MediocreGamer42: what the flux?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I honestly think there is a possibility it was me and I don't remember. I have definitely bought them at cons and sending one is certainly something I would have done. My memory is terrible.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I've definitely handed them out to other Enforcers at PAXes.
ryuhimora: Is this the dreamcast again?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: yus
Mysticman89: flux is a category of things rather than a single product as far as a quick google shows
delta__vee: is there a specific conductivity problem you're trying to fix there or is this a fishing expedition?
Arclight_Dynamo: So are we just redoing the joins and hoping that's the problem? What do we do when that doesn't work?
delta__vee: woo spinning
Vampiricsloth: wheee around the world
TheMerricat: you spin me right around baby, right around
Nicarrow: right around
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: In terms of solder, flux is a chemical used to help the soldering process. Usually rosin.
MediocreGamer42: did he replace that whole chip or something?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Soldering wires onto surface mounted chips is a nightmare.
Arclight_Dynamo: @MediocreGamer42 Soldered a new one on top of the old one.
RandomTrivia: Into INFINITY

Jameson920 : oh god, chatception
kalira77: i can see forever
DiscordianTokkan: It's us!
Donutholez: Momentary Stream-ception
Nicarrow: i want to learn to solder .. is the build a keyboard a good start or to hard for first thing?
Anaerin: Continuity check on that chip, including making sure there's no continuity where there's not meant to be any.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I'm thankful most of what I work with is old enough to be 90% through-hole.
Gryff1n: Just got here, what is the liquid (?) on the chip?
NuCk3: What mad science is Ian working on tonight just got here
Arclight_Dynamo: @ExpeditionToGamesEnd The real nightmare was when he separated all the individual wires of an IDE ribbon cable, and soldered each individually.
RandomTrivia: Ian is trying to put new BIOS onto a Dreamcast because... reasons.
kalira77: so what exactly is ian doing? I understand soldering, but i 100% don't understand how the electronics works
RandomTrivia: For whatever purpose, this involves re-wiring some of it
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: @Nicarrow Not sure what all goes into building a keyboard, but it's best to start with any project that has only through-hole parts and no surface mount if you're just learning.
HeroToMillions: are you Gary Oldman
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: @Arclight_Dynamo Oh, I have done that. It is.
Nicarrow: ty @ExpeditionToGamesEnd
Arclight_Dynamo: The chip he is working on is the new BIOS, which is mounted on the original BIOS.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I don't think I can tell you to learn to solder with the same stuff we get new techs to learn to solder on at my work.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Not unless you have a CRT monitor lying around that needs a cap kit.

ExpeditionToGamesEnd: What kind of soldering iron do you use, Ian?
kalira77: wait, y'all weren't joking about soldering being part of the boot process??
Arclight_Dynamo: Do you have the switch in the box? Might make it faster to just solder it on.
TheAwkes: Some of them. Others have severe shelf life. Delamination is not uncommon.
Anaerin: Solder the wires, not your fingers.
SeismicLawns: keep your soldering iron hot seems like it'd be a euphemism for preventing erectile dysfunction
SilentOptimist: @kalira77, i hopped i was...
Anexmedia: If your iron is hot for more than 4 hours, it is a fire hazard and you should be concerned

Anexmedia: So here's a TTFS Idea, you've brought the arcade machines to life but have you considered making a Bespoke USB fight stick/controller
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: At most you'd need 620 gigs for every Dreamcast game. But that's only assuming every Dreamcast game actually used the entire gig of space on the GD-rom, which very few actually got close.
MungoDude: lemme check
ZusatzPlus: Didn't he already do a fight stick?
Anexmedia: Now can we get an NVME drive
RandomTrivia: Did the Dreamcast have any gamesave capability?

Arclight_Dynamo: VMUs were memory cards crossed with Tamogachis.

BaronSnow: Pocketstation
RandomTrivia: An external memory card with a tiny console built in

ExpeditionToGamesEnd: It was the PocketStation. Plugged into the memory card slot,
DeM0nFiRe: So basically dreamcast stole the idea rom wii U Kappa
delta__vee: what I remember about VMUs is that the standby mode chewed through CR2032s quite fast :D
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Yeah, BaronSnow, it folded and had the memory card plug in the middle.

jessieimproved: I used gparted but linux so?
Anaerin: Or there's volume manager
DarkMorford: Right-click the start button, Disk Management
CaptainSpam: Yeah, I was going to say gparted, but I doubt that degree of low-level stuff would work outside of its home OS...
AegeusEvander: disk part is very simple but is in DOS
Anaerin: The SUPER SECRET menu: WIN+X
Nicarrow: is there a vid for putting mac os on this laptop
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Well, the FAQ does say to make an msdos partition table.
jessieimproved: So my two girls are doing remote school, one has a cheap Dell and one has a cheap Thinkpad. The cheap Thinkpad is far superior.
jessieimproved: To be clear, these are school issued
Arclight_Dynamo: DOS? Does it need to be FAT16?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: It says FAT32
Arclight_Dynamo: I didn't think FAT32 was a DOS file system.
TehAmelie: the Overlook Hotel carpet background seems ominous in context
NarwhalsInATrenchcoat: I don't read DRMSHLL as anything other than Drum Shill
DarkMorford: I couldn't see what the partition table was
TheMerricat: not that surprised @jessieimproved. I do remember a time when Dell made quality but for pretty much the last couple of decades they seem to prefer trying to build with cardboard
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: https://imgur.com/F5OvZ29
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I did a screenshot of the HDD Prep section of the FAQ.
Vampiricsloth: ding fries are done!
DarkMorford: @LoadingReadyRun Pop open a terminal and try "diskutil list"? That should show us what we need.
TheMerricat: you sure there is a mbr on disk Ian? I can't remember FAT anymore, did it require a master boot record on non boot drives?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Figure people might not want to click on a .ru link if I just link the FAQ directly.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: But I cn also do that
TehAmelie: come to think of it, a fold of corrugated cardboard sort of looks like a transistor gate
Anaerin: Incorrectly partitioned the drive?
delta__vee: i think it's saying that the DS folder needs and the DS_core.bin both need to be at the root?
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: Of note, it also says this on the "powering your drive" section:
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: * It is not recommended powering your drive from your DC. Unless, you remove your gd-rom drive completely and are going to power a 2.5" HDD or Compact Flash Card in place of your gd-rom drive.
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: I wasn't paying attention on how we're powering the drive.
delta__vee: my fail english? that's unpossible

TheMerricat: I wonder if there are USB to IDE adapters out there....
DarkMorford: @LoadingReadyRun "The current 48-bit LBA scheme was introduced in 2003 with the ATA-6 standard" per wikipedia. If that drive is any older you're SOL.
RandomTrivia: I mean, the hard drive is old enough to make its own decisions about who it marries
TehAmelie: an 8 gig hard drive, very classic. my first computer i think had 40 gig
Arclight_Dynamo: Is there any reason not to try the other drive?
TheMerricat: @nicarrow said this one is 2001
DarkMorford: The drive should have a date on the label
KenKopin: Suddenly the drive went from being too old to too new.
KenKopin: Oh I misunderstood.
RandomTrivia: Welp. Fire up the 2TB monster!
TehAmelie: i remember having a 120 megabyte memory stick and being happy to have it. don't know what happened to it. it's like it became so redundant it ceased to exist
ExpeditionToGamesEnd: FAQ says 2TB works.
Nicarrow: ya i saw the date and was like that is OLD in computer terms
LiveFaust: @TehAmelie considering the halflife of memory, yeah, it's probably all irradiated to more stable substances.
Arclight_Dynamo: So, the ideal scenario when we get a minimum viable product is to swap out the drive for a 2.5" one, or for a compact flash card, and it can live in the hole where the GD-ROM used to be, right?
KenKopin: I'm old enough to remember when a wealthy customer of ours bought a 4 GB drive. It was a 5.25" MFM full height, and took us hours to format.
TehAmelie: makes sense
Grenevil: How long has this ICE CREAM! challenge been going on?

Anaerin: Doesn't that IDE->SATA adapter need power?
Nicarrow: my 1st PC that was mine. was a 1 GB hard drive and it ran windows 95
delta__vee: MFM 4GB? didn't they use MFM in the era when a 20 megabyte HD was a lot? o_O
TheMerricat: @tehamelie my family's first computer computer used a tape recorder. it didn't have enough cpu to decode audio into code and run the video, so when you loaded programs it shunted the signal so that you could "watch" the audio.
LiveFaust: Honestly, it's incredibly relaxing to watch someone ELSE have to deal with this kind of problem for a change. lrrBEEJ

RandomTrivia: Did you do the switch?
KenKopin: @delta__vee It was around '86. so it may have been as much as 40 MB. I just remember seeing it on the work bench all freaking day formatting.
LiveFaust: Ok, I work IT... I have a younger coworker...and I had to help him put a drive from one machine as a slave in the other. He didn't even know what a jumper was, much less how to set Primary/Secondary (to use current terminology) with them. I was...concern.
Anaerin: Same error as before.
DarkMorford: @LoadingReadyRun (Oh, and just FYI, the industry standard terms for the two drives on an IDE bus are "Device 0" and "Device 1". Neither controls or has priority over the other, so even "primary" and "secondary" don't really make sense.)
TheMerricat: that hard drive you posted @tehamelie looks as if it was from a mainframe. I'd guess the ports were for cooling
