PharaohBender27: Ahoy-hoy! PrideWave
beowuuf: sergeHi pharaohbender27!
GapFiller: speaking of there any confirmation that the old one was infact load bearing or was that just prurient wishful thinking on all our parts to explain Twitchs issues this past week?
Juliamon: That was purely comedic. The issues have been happening since before.
beowuuf: I only saw it as an unattributed story, so no clue

Juliamon: We'll find out tomorrow I guess
PharaohBender27: @Foxmar320 Eh, not too horrible, though it's been a hell of a week, and I also got a summons to possibly serve on a grand jury for a month :\
PharaohBender27: @TheMerricat That scans

djalternative: yeah, since it's a text replacement, I'm betting it'll just pull from whatever the call points to on the day

EightBitDreams: Nintendo had been making hardware since the 70's

xantos69: I would rather right reavers than the borg. But its close.
xantos69: fight***

Plasterboard: EVE is just a prolonged exercise in attrition as a means of combat
SableTiger: There's definitely warleaders talking about those things but yeah, the Titan is kind of a hard counter to frig-rushes because it's a huge AoE.

CAKHost: Yes

Graved: Zelda uses custom model, unfortunately
SmithKurosaki: @CAKHost Fair. I played pretty heavily for like 5+ years, but haven't really played since ~2013?
Raiz0k: Re Mi format, yeah, it looks like a base model format, with no post-processing etc.
bladed_shadow: i found this really neat when i heard it
PotatoWraiths: boop
matthaus_c: Re Mi, the model format that sneaks into your hair and controls you for cooking

EightBitDreams: And HoloLens
Foxmar320: I found it REALLY boring and hard to play
MaladyDark: the last time i saw stuff for minecraft Earth, it was all, this has not been rolled out to your country, but we'll let you know when it is
matthaus_c: I don't have a copy of Minecraft :p
richard_ermen: I have 4 copies of minecraft and its weird.
Juliamon: I thought the meme was that everyone had a copy of Skyrim
niccus: oh, where was that followup tweet
NimrodXIV: I laughed, and then realized I have 2 copies.
SmithKurosaki: It's not a full version, but yes
GapFiller: phunnily enough I dont have a copy of Minecraft having not played it in something like 10 years
ToastyLoaff: woo hoo
DoodlestheGreat: _I_ do not have Minecraft.
Raiz0k: Yeah, which Ducktales :D?
Graved: And using GeyserMC, you can now connect to full-fledged edition of Minecraft
SmithKurosaki: Quick, get him
Raiz0k: "Bedrock" pretty much counts as "not a full version", trollolo....
LurkerSpine: I'm sad new Ducktales is done after this season
Foxmar320: Yes
Raiz0k: Not quite.
richard_ermen: The java edition was actually the classic one, if I remember correctly
EightBitDreams: Minecraft java launched as a free thing before 1.0
bytecaster: Actually the very original was java. And there might have been free creative mode?
shendaras: "Sort of"
Raiz0k: The earlier preview versions were free.
ButButTheJesus: minecraft started in Java and free
TheMerricat: Java edition of Minecraft was never free but there was an Education version of Minecraft for schools
Snowcookies: It was bedrock that's free if you had java
shea_wolfe: Creative mode was free and browser based I think?
MaladyDark: I only have 1 copy of minecraft. I bought it in 2009. back in 2009-2012 there was a free browser version
RockPusher: Way way back in the beginning, Minecraft was a free thing and a web-based applet
LurkerSpine: Minecraft educational edition?
Raiz0k: There was also some sort of trial version of Java edition.
Lord_Hosk: I bought three copies of minecraft for christmas
Faulpyr: OG Minecraft was Java... and super poorly optimized.
Graved: Java is not free, but you can just download pirated archives off the internet. It is very small LUL
Ivalenz_: You pay for your account, the software is free.
RomanGoro: Accounts are paid, but the download is free
petey_vonwho: I "technically" have minecraft but I don't remember how to access it anymore since I wiped my computer
LordZarano: "Minecraft Classic"
drawnbinary: I don't have Minecraft but I also only have 6 games on Steam
Blue_Anteater: @LurkerSpine Same! Very sad we won't see the return of Nega-Duck!
SmithKurosaki: I technically have 3 copies of minecraft
Foxmar320: I have the java version and the mobile version. Can't stand the mobile one.
slowbird: there was a while where the payment thing in Minecraft broke so they let everyone play it for free. i mean right at the beginning before it got big.
Gizmoloid: I was about to comment on the video that I don't have Minecraft and then I realized it was gifted to me for X360 years ago :D
GapFiller: swyrd I've constantly thought abt getting back into Minecraft throughout the 10 years since playing the Hell outta the pre alpha w/o ever actually going thru w/ it

Raiz0k: If you want actually free "Minecraft", there's an OS clone called Minetest.
MrUglama: they also host servers
niccus: oh right, relatedly, roblox now has a market valuation?
Neddy471: I bought three copies of Minecraft for family back when they originally came out.

Foxmar320: I remember that big CTS with everyone playing Minecraft
TacitusVigil: Beej already plays Beejcraft, no time for Minecraft Dr. Jones!

GapFiller: mmm chili dogs
Foxmar320: Chilidogs :P

ArchonsForge: It happened again with 2 different games, back to back! Yesterday I think
shea_wolfe: Sonic 1 I thought, but yeah android
BigFMonster: It was SANIC 1
Foxmar320: Sonic 1
EightBitDreams: First DLC
MaladyDark: @rockpusher https://jayisgames.com/review/minecraft.php july 18 2009.
Foxmar320: It had Tails in it for some reason but it was Sonic 1
Neddy471: Use your words.
Graved: sonic & knuckles & knuckles
BrindleBoar: I will die still mad that there were not more weird cartridge shenanigans like S&K
KeytarCat: Sonic 1 with a bunch of QoL from Sonic 3
matthaus_c: "we can't have hit 1 million" "HOLY CRAP WE HIT 1 MILLION"
shea_wolfe: Lets talk about Frame counts Beej
LurkerSpine: Summoning Salt's video on Mike Tyson's Punch Out is an amazing discussion about how speedruns track time.
Foxmar320: lol
SmithKurosaki: Thats... kindof hilarious
Graved: "Couldn't", and yet there are new full second records being broken every year
LordZarano: Mario 1 can only end a level every 21 frames
GapFiller: see also Billy Mitchell
RockPusher: MaladyDark first mention I can find in my chat logs with my friends is Jun 13th 2009 and it seems we'd been playing a bit before then
LordZarano: axes, Bowser throws axes in Mario 1
djalternative: that's amazing
shea_wolfe: Best part is there's a somewhat infamous "Bad Frame" where you'll get hit by either bowser or a hammer bro right at the end
shea_wolfe: Losing your run
Raiz0k: Sierpiński's Mario.
EightBitDreams: There are a panel of legendary speedrunners
xantos69: Yea...speed runners are a particular branch of nerd folks I can't ever really understand. But good for them I guess.
LurkerSpine: speed runs archive
Graved: speedrun.com is de-facto standard for newer games, but older games like Perfect Dark and Golden Eye got their own websites
Decaped: It's more like grad students writing papers about proper standards, rather than whatever BS Guiness comes up with.

PharaohBender27: Oh *that* Cooking Mama game :D
shea_wolfe: Also don't even get started with the different categories
Graved: "Mathememetian", excuse me
EightBitDreams: Hehe
EightBitDreams: Martian
shendaras: And sometimes console connected to the TV they're using and so on
DeM0nFiRe: Yeah the Minecraft cheating thing is an example where someone played it live and streamed it, it just turned out they played on a modified game to improve some RNG
Raiz0k: @EightBitDreams : not a "mathematician", but a "astrophysicist", and the latter used very suspicious argumentation and language for someone supposedly working in science, to put it charitably.
Raiz0k: *an, crap
RvLeshrac: Plug for https://speedbump.run/ , if people want to try running lesser-run games as a contest :p
Decaped: That minecraft cheater made for a good statistics refresher.
Emergent_OS: If you are the first to speed run a specific game, you become an arbitrator of the speedruns for that game. MandaloreGaming made a speed run of Limbo of the Lost, and as a first speed run of that game, he automatically became an arbitrator of any future speed run of that game.
SohNata: I still love that Rami Ismail streamed a flight simulator run of the flight he was on *at the time* and almsot landed simultaneously.
shendaras: It's gotten fairly sophisticated, with statistical analysis for rng and so on. Knock-on effects when someone changes something and something else changes and people realize they're linked.
iris_of_ether: @sohnata I continue to be impressed by him :)
ButButTheJesus: ensnowify
Raiz0k: There's actually quite a substantial body of research in modern computer vision to augment that sort of cloud-covered terrain.
SmithKurosaki: Apply precipitation?
EightBitDreams: Flight Sim 2020 in VR is purely amazing. Crazy immersive. Of course, it totally eats computers for breakfast, especially when there is snow
Raiz0k: "Generative imagery"
Raiz0k: Although it's not like a 50-year-old thing, so there's no on right term.
EightBitDreams: You can fly in snowstorms. You can choose the weather ior choose live weather
RatekStormcrow: You can have real weather
RatekStormcrow: or custom weather
djalternative: yeah you can choose to control weather
Fairgrim: Isnt there an option to use real time weather in FlightSim
Fairgrim: Any plane is a weapon
Raiz0k: Meh, everything sufficiently energetic is a weapon.
TheMerricat: And that's the story about how Heather got on the No Fly list chat....
GapFiller: 90% of old code has apparently been lost

xantos69: yea...emulators never really capture the really deep stuff. So many games I played as a kid had timers tied to processor speed.
GapFiller: something something Doctor Who
Fairgrim: Blizzard was having this issue
Raiz0k: Yeah, but source code is not like stone tablets, a lot depends on the actual implementation - as was covered on the latest Checkpoint, and we're pretty much talking right now.
GapFiller: its funny the similarities here between old video games and early television
PharaohBender27: Sounds similar to how a lot of TV stations used to just reuse tapes
Laserbeaks_Fury: Yeah, the original Star Control was tied to processor speed
Raiz0k: It's not a matter of code, it's a matter of how it runs on a specific hardware and OS.
EightBitDreams: I was a game developer on Gameboy Color and GBA. I had personal source backups on Zip Disk for years :) ...yeah, it's gone now
TheMerricat: That reminds me I need to find out if they still sell motherboards with onboard FDC chips. I found a briefcase of old Atari ST disks and wanted to dump them but the only Windows program that can do it properly requires bare metal access to the floppy drive.
Greggleswong: oh the iomega grift
Graved: On the other hand, Tony Hawk 1+2 remake completely lifted controls from old Underground to preserve the controls
Raiz0k: @Laserbeaks_Fury : *lots* of games were tied to the processor speed, because the easiest way to "track game ticks" was to count processor ticks. Just check out how many older games on GOG etc. have artificial slowdowns to make them playable on mother equipment.
Logue_Yne: the c&c remasters making of has a cool bit about finding old things
Creideiki_SE: Ars Technica had a fascinating article on getting the very last bits of emulator fidelity: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/04/how-snes-emulators-got-a-few-pixels-from-complete-perfection/
Raiz0k: Even games as young as Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth had that problem.
Loonatic93: Does anybody else remember Uptime Magazine? It had some really great little games for the Apple II and other personal computers of the era!
cuttlefishman: Gets into bikeshedding easily
Loonatic93: I've been trying to find some of the games they had to see if they have been updated into some sort of Web game or something.
Creideiki_SE: There's also the http://visual6502.org/ approach, but that's probably unattainable for anything after the 8-bit era.

Raiz0k: Only "surprising" if you don't know what kind of person Linus Torvalds is :D.
RunningMonkeys: yeah I'm guilty of doing that in my own code
rocketjohn: open source programmers are where toxic gamers get all their worst ideas from.
GapFiller: somewhere in some bit of early source code is a literal 'Here There Be Dragons' comment
EightBitDreams: Inverse square root
shendaras: Fast inverse square root, with crazy bit hacks.
Raiz0k: And discounting it being par for the course in programming in general.
EightBitDreams: Yeah, I helped port Missile Command to mobile, we had access to the original arcade machine code. Wasn't helpful at all, instead I watched lots of videos and read deconstructions of how the game worked, that was much more useful
Loonatic93: @LoadingReadyRun Does "Uptime Magazine" ring a bell with any of you? It was a computing magazine that offered floppies of some pretty neat games for the Apple II, Commodore era.
xantos69: Yea all good code is commented. All good comments contain the thoughts of the engineers who wrote it so you can understand their thoughts later on. All sufficiently important code should have been frustrating to write...hence swears become inevitable.

Raiz0k: @xantos69 : all good code is commented as to "why". There's lots of bad code that's full of comments like "this line increments the variable x by 1".
bladed_shadow: Cheers
shea_wolfe: If you want the real insanity you have to check the commit messages though
Kiytan: any game that releases is a miracle
3and4fifths: unzip, strip, touch, finger, grep, mount, fsck, more, yes, fsck, fsck, unmount, sleep

TheMerricat: @plasterboard that even happens when it's your own. I've been guilty of comning up with a brainstorm, forgetting to write down how I got there, then coming back and not having an effing clue what I was doing but also impressed that whatever it was, worked.
Greggleswong: Get those fractions of a penny!
PixelArtDragon: @Raiz0k Nope, inside the DLL code
ButButTheJesus: they might make a future thing at some point!
Raiz0k: @xantos69 : at the risk of sounding trite, generally, people who write good comments know that the best comment is good code that does not require any comment. But yeah, I've had the experience you described, always a pleasure.
DanielJGrouse: coming to next gen consoles, meaning the PS6 generation
EightBitDreams: That's how Last Guardian was discovered, a job listing had a screenshot showing just a chain going down into a well
PixelArtDragon: @Raiz0k And this was Civ 5, not civ 4
TheMerricat: I can't tell if I'm just too embedded in Skyrim since I'm trying to rebuild a mod list for it ATM, but apparently the same just happened for the Elder Scrolls community with a map of Tamriel that Bethesda tweeted.

TheMerricat: And now back to mangling records in Skyrim to try to get ALL THE MODS installed.

TheMerricat: It really just started out with me trying to update a premade modlist that I installed via Wabbajack and wanted to tweak one thing, but the dl page for that mod had patches for other mods and I went "oh, I don't remember reading about that mod, I wonder if it's installed on the list... wow, it isn't but man I really want to try it out!" Three days of iterations and I have about 100g dl'ed that I'm trying to cram into it.
