SeiichiSin: All tires are wet in the rain.
TehAmelie: i want sliding gears to be a thing. picture two cones pointing in opposite directions, and a gearstick that moves a ball in between them

TehAmelie: maybe i have to draw a diagram
johnalogue: @tehamelie I can't understand it but I can imagine just enough to be interested
johnalogue: oh gosh I'm coming in from mobile and the connection is not good enough
LordZarano: TehAmelie Continuously Variable Transmission is a thing but quite rare
margieargie: Oh, loving the sound of the shfter getting picked up (I think)
RockPusher: CVT isn't that rare anymore
johnalogue: @lordzarano rare? CVTs are getting very popular in economy cars
johnalogue: DCT and more automatic gears surpassing them though
RockPusher: my old Honda had a CVT - the clutch was stuffed but the actual CVT was great
TXC2: are CVTs the ones that slowly expand out?
RockPusher: the performance was much nicer than my current Mazda
wildpeaks: difficulty level: Chat
johnalogue: I must reject CVTs so long as they have fake shifts
Saunabath: Isn't CVTs what is used in scooters?
SnowBuddy18: @johnalogue it's because it feels unnatural to not have shifts

TXC2: johnalogue that is the most metal way of describing a car :p
CAKHost: It's going to junka your funka and bam in your face?
RockPusher: mine didn't fake shift - you could hear it adjusting as you went about your drive

Driosenth: The H-slot isn't plated off?
wildpeaks: when the warnings get too oddly specific, that's just asking people to try it
LordZarano: Soon all this discussion of manual/automatic/cvt gears will be obsolete. Electric motors do the whole range in 1 gear
Texan_Reverend: A new 3D printed plate make that a bit less sharp.
TXC2: specific warnings = a Law suit happened over this
johnalogue: @wildpeaks its probably because people already did
Saunabath: Once Ian has mastered changing gears in PC2 he can move onto Euro Truck Simulator 2
wildpeaks: definitely
TehAmelie: maybe this makes my idea clearer https://i.imgur.com/0HzAiZ8.png
Saunabath: And figure out high and low range
johnalogue: @lordzarano strong disagree, multiple ratios can still be helpful for EVs
johnalogue: @lordzarano porsche and Rimac used transmissions on one of their axles
Phyinx: @LordZarano Pretty sure the Porsche Taycan has two gears
RockPusher: Wall-chan! They can't keep us apart forever! jamieSmooch
Driosenth: @Saunabath I don't think he has the double or triple transition shifters that many of those trucks have
PixelArtDragon: @TehAmelie "For make car go smoother", nice
shadowxviii: Hello Live Ian
TXC2: hello shadowxviii welcome
johnalogue: just like a normal transmission it lets you use more of your power without actually needing more
Texan_Reverend: Adapters are available for this shifter to give it up to I think 18 gears.
TehAmelie: i didn't want to sound like i know anything about engines
Texan_Reverend: Specifically for the truck simulator games.
johnalogue: I've heard people say that on EV converted classic cars that the shifter is still useful to them
johnalogue: @tehamelie I want to sound like I know anything, so this arrangement works

PixelArtDragon: I let go of my dreams years ago
johnalogue: @pixelartdragon relatable
TXC2: audio descriptive streams are the wave of the future Kappa
TXC2: you people had dreams to let go of?
LordZarano: Sure gears in an EV can be useful sometimes, but they aren't Required like they are for combustion engines. So most consumer EVs don't have them
margieargie: @Driosenth There are ways to set up range/splitter transmission in the Truck Simulator games with just a standard wheel and shifter, it's not 100% accurate of course but it gives something like it.
RockPusher: TehAmelie then I am impressed - replace the ball with a belt around the cones and you have what is my understanding of the basic CVT design - and I found it elegant but non-obvious so I'm impressed you arrived at it without existing knowledge
johnalogue: @lordzarano with how important power consumption/performance compromises are for range, I'd imagine they'll become more popular

CaptainSpam: @Bobtheninjagoldfish Sure, I'll go with that.
Tiger_Paladin: DAMN
RedPhoenixCasts: I dont think that guy is gonna be happy with that
mr_yarget: textbook pit maneuver, sir.
Tiger_Paladin: That was cold!
Juliamon: The closest IRL match to "egmelt" was "EG Melts wax melts"
Bobtheninjagoldfish: see. like I said Wax
Texan_Reverend: It was a mustang driver is enough of a reason.
TehAmelie: EG is the Electricity General right
CaptainSpam: Sure, but here it's styled as "Egmelt", as one word. That's where I'm getting a bit confused.
Bobtheninjagoldfish: Hello Sir, back again so soon. Egmelt to go?
RockPusher: The repairs by our friendly wizards and ghosts
isKPan: every mustang taken down is one crowd saved
Juliamon: ("Egmelt" is a fictitious company made for the game)
margieargie: Stop it! The pit wizards only have so much mana!
Jeezy56: ficticious but delicious!
Bobtheninjagoldfish: STEAL THEIR MELT
PixelArtDragon: Ghost egmelts!
johnalogue: I'm hoping for a Hyundai Genesis Coupe someday...the Korean Mustang!
TehAmelie: can't believe you didn't hit that guy on your left
CAKHost: Maybe the glaring guy is the director?
mr_yarget: his egmelt was done.
Juliamon: !addquote (Ian) [now] Wow! Nice changeover, no one died!
LRRbot: New quote #7482: "Wow! Nice changeover, no one died!" —Ian [2021-01-30]
Juliamon: I don't know why that tickled me so much
CAKHost: I think it was the tone
TehAmelie: the expression "pit stop" comes from the tradition of sending people into the pit
GerrardUK: Do you have to double de-clutch in it?
KevinTheShark: Thats most cars in europe Ian, not just classic Mini's :D
johnalogue: I've practiced manual driving a bit but I'm a fake fan who drives auto
Texan_Reverend: That was an amazing description that actually had me laughing out loud.
Saunabath: I drove an UAZ jeep in the army. that was a very similar experience
AI_coder: I love my manual and I have quite a fast car irl, but I don;t have any distance indicators, sucks while reversing, for example
GerrardUK: I've driven military Land Rover Defenders (WOLF), and they are just terrible
ritchards: Hey Ian, how goes the offroad driving? ;)
RedPhoenixCasts: ian the mad lad, Aero damage? smh
ritchards: Woo!
KevinTheShark: Mini gears arent so much a certainty as a suggestion, and they are most certainly not a binary system, they are very much an analogue systen
Driosenth: I don't think you have a room on the center console for the SiriusXM deck
Jeezy56: one of the cars in the Daytona 24h just got pinged by Race Control for "spraying with hot smell"
VmKid: But Ian, I need to actually drive my car
mr_yarget: Spraying hot smell? Thats a paddling.
KevinTheShark: Certainly a long term plan
Juliamon: The trick to getting free music is to forego it for 6 months?
johnalogue: I'd rather just never have satellite radio to deal with tbh
SnowBuddy18: it's neat that that works
Mysticman89: You'd expect the signle would basically stayed in queue waiting to successfully send
PixelArtDragon: Spray hot smell and lie
Texan_Reverend: Back in the pre merger days I managed to get a lifetime activation for my Sirius radio and have just been moving the head unit to new cars ever since.
VmKid: Just be like me and only ever listen to podcasts and my local NPR station
johnalogue: remove one thing from my interface and mail
SnowBuddy18: @Mysticman89 basically, it's not looking for a return signal, so it assumes you got it
VmKid: Which reminds me, I got a class action settlement from SiriusXM which I am still yet to cash
VmKid: Because they cold-called me without my permission and as it turns out, that's a no-no
Mysticman89: fair, but like, perhaps for subscription stuff it should be looking for a return confirmation.
SnowBuddy18: it definitely should be
PixelArtDragon: Maybe you could create per-decive encryptions that need to be received periodically, and if something was unsubscribed you stop sending out those keys
Jeezy56: is it worth turning the traction control up for this track? I know it would mean less drifting
Juliamon: "I sent you my subscription cancel signal, please reply"
CaptainSpam: Satellites just blast out data. It doesn't care who receives it. Same goes for GPS and TV.
CaptainSpam: Or in other words, it's entirely client-side protection.
johnalogue: I'd rather hack it out and just have AM/FM. No subs there!
SnowBuddy18: Ian, when are we going to pit to fix our engine?
RockPusher: Eh - you could cycle through historic ones over time - might take a while but eventually you hit the missing ones
TehAmelie: i never even heard of a subscription radio channel. is that new?
VmKid: They've been around for quite a while
VmKid: Most new cars come with it
Juliamon: AM/FM has less dropout than Sirius in my experience. Sirius can't handle going under an overpass.
VmKid: They're satellite radio, not AM or FM though
PixelArtDragon: One of the most fascinating things about GPS was how civilian devices were required to be inaccurate until during the Gulf War soldiers ended up having civilian devices and it was a problem
Driosenth: It wouldn't be that hard to permanently implement, have a hidden channel that constantly broadcast the allowed decks keys. Have the deck check to see if its key is on that channel. There are 35m sirius subscribers. It all depends on the bandwidth per channel and how long they are willing to have each cycle of key transmittion to take
CaptainSpam: Sirius/XM have been around for... like a decade or so? But I guess if you either don't get new cars or just plain don't care THAT much about non-terrestrial radio, it's very very likely it slipped by you.
Saunabath: Yeah and ABS works pretty much the same in games
SnowBuddy18: @Driosenth that's how many subscribers where are, but how many devices are there that can run Sirius?
CaptainSpam: And I'm quite serious, it's very likely you just might not care about satellite radio if you're used to, say, your own podcasts or have good local stations.
KevinTheShark: I feel like you and Jeremy Clarkson would gget on very well regarding cars
johnalogue: Thrust vectoring is different
VmKid: Car still carring
TehAmelie: new cars, no. my stepdad never paid more than like 300 dollars for a car. . .
johnalogue: @KevinTheShark James May, maybe. Clarkson, no
CaptainSpam: There's standalone Sirius units, but naaaaaaaah.
Texan_Reverend: I think that was meant in the more power kind of sense that's all.
KevinTheShark: It would be interesting to say the least
NamesAreSilly: Maybe not with the man himself, but in regards to car preference? Maybe.
mr_yarget: James May is a treasure of a man.
mr_yarget: You are too, Ian.
RockPusher: Worth pointing out for the SIrius discussion - it is a North American thing
mr_yarget: Fund it.
johnalogue: Roadquest can be the next gen Grand Tour, I'll call Bezos
Saunabath: Oh yeah, May is great
NotCainNorAbel: May and Ian in a classic mini lrrAWESOME
KevinTheShark: No offence intended of course. I simply know that Clarkson would prefer a car that doesnt limit its speed for traction control
KeytarCat: NB driving?
TehAmelie: those windmills make me think, can you set up a zero-emission kind of race in this game? where everyone has to run on solar or whatever they can think of
KeytarCat: Oh, variable gas, that makes sense
johnalogue: Personally I currently use Spotify via Android Auto in my car, but I'm considering switching back to local media since spotify patented some creepy stuff
mr_yarget: I paid for all of the throttle, I'm going to use it all.
SnowBuddy18: @TehAmelie half the field goes solar, the race is rainy
DarkMorford: Ah, so kart racing, gotcha. Pedal to the metal, and what are brakes?
CaptainSpam: I've just got Podcast Addict on Android Auto. Which is nice.
margieargie: @SnowBuddy18 Then just put a hydroelectric generator on the car, easy right? Kappa
RockPusher: I have a flash drive full of music in the car and really don't see me ever moving off that system
SohNata: Just dropping in to say thanks for these Ian, I've had to watch on VOD (it's like 11PM), hope the last races go well...and Viva la Egmelt!
PixelArtDragon: I don't podcast much, what's Spotify's problem with them?
RockPusher: Oops
CaptainSpam: I've got a Jellyfin server set up with my music on it, but Jellyfin's Android app needs a wee bit of work there.
RockPusher: Wet Wet Wet
NamesAreSilly: That sounded wet
johnalogue: I have the PowerAmp music player on my phone and it works with Auto. Very good music player!
margieargie: Well.
Hexi_Lexi: hey LRR fans and Ian!!! hope yall are doing well <3
nalha: half second already passed
Texan_Reverend: At least since I wasn't there at the glass didn't break.
Mangledpixel: hot mic
PharaohBender27: It just me, or is lrrIAN the crewmember most likely to spill water on stream?
Hexi_Lexi: mic 5!!!
PixelArtDragon: Mic5
RockPusher: Hot mics are always in Ian's area
Juliamon: He's the most-likely for a lot of things
Hexi_Lexi: Ian is most likely to be most likely :P
Juliamon: spillage, hot mic, forgetting to switch cameras, forgetting to unmute cameras they switch to...
DarkMorford: @CaptainSpam How are you liking Jellyfin in general? I've looked into a few of the free Plex alternatives and none of them seemed to have glowing reviews.
nalha: he's also a lot least likely
Juliamon: getting the VODs muted for humming music...
SnowBuddy18: my dad just texted me that he's thinking of trading in his Ford Fusion, and when I asked why, the response was "Because Porsche"
DarkMorford: Either the software itself was bad or there was a bunch of politic-ing among the dev team.
TehAmelie: not really this game's field i guess. but there should be a game about building and racing eco cars
nalha: "because porsche" is always a great argument
johnalogue: never heard of Jellyfin, looking that up
KeytarCat: Audible Podcast ad, as if we weren't just talking about how bad an idea that was
SnowBuddy18: @nalha yes, but this is a Porsche SUV
johnalogue: @SnowBuddy18 crime detected
CaptainSpam: @DarkMorford For music it's good, from the web interface. Their Android app, however, suffers a bit from design expectations which don't necessarily hold true. But all in all, I like it as a remote bucket of music.
nalha: @SnowBuddy18 eh, still works
TehAmelie: "how many square meters of solar cells can you pack on your car before it starts going slower?" and other such technical challenges
TwitchTVsFrank: @snowbuddy18 ah so an expensive vw with a fancy bumper
CaptainSpam: @DarkMorford For anything else (video, etc), I can't say, as I haven't used it for that. Though it does seem like most of their dev efforts are focused on video, so hopefully it's all right?
johnalogue: @TehAmelie solar panels are overrated anyways
VmKid: Speaking of which, does anyone have a good replacement for Google Play Music?
SnowBuddy18: @johnalogue that was my thinking
VmKid: YouTube Music is a pile
SnowBuddy18: @TwitchTVsFrank basically
johnalogue: BEV + Nuke
nalha: spotify?
CaptainSpam: @VmKid That's basically what I've been hoping to use Jellyfin for. :-) Though that's me setting up my own instance of it. Not sure if that helps you out.
MortifiedPenguins: other standard music streaming services like spotify or are you looking for something else?
DarkMorford: @CaptainSpam Ah, gotcha. I'm mostly looking for something to serve up movies and TV shows to my laptop or a console, but good to know it's been overall positive for you.
fs_scott subscribed with Prime. They've subscribed for 36 months, currently on a 2 month streak!
LRRbot: lrrSPOT Thanks for subscribing, fs_scott! (Today's storm count: 11)
nalha: longest pit stop ever
Hexi_Lexi: "the wet has been dealt with" Ian Horner (2021)
johnalogue: PowerAmp is a good music player for Android I find, it's paid but better than searching "Mp3 player free" on Google Play, so...
CaptainSpam: @DarkMorford I'd say it's worth a shot to mess with if you've got a server to serve it up, at the very least.
saberpilot subscribed with Prime. They've subscribed for 17 months!
saberpilot: :D love watching you drive (and crash occasionally)
LRRbot: lrrSPOT Thanks for subscribing, saberpilot! (Today's storm count: 12)
VmKid: @johnalogue I have a bunch of Google Opinion Rewards money burning a hole in my digital pocket so paid is no problem
TemporallyAwry: Echoing johnalogue on PowerAmp - better settings and features than any of them I've used.
VmKid: See also: Stitcher, which does a lot of the same nonsense.
Max_Mckayful: Also seems to make podcasts harder to download?
nalha: but what about the shareholders?
johnalogue: I'm very close to ditching Spotify for getting creepy with "AI suggestion" tech and surveilance patents
VmKid: I'm reminded of the time when I was listening to an NPR podcast and it served me an ad for *the very company I worked for* at the time.
MortifiedPenguins: Spotify's music quality sucks as well
RockPusher: If it isn't an audio file I can download with the automation for that being RSS then you are not a podcast
johnalogue: I just need to buy the music I've found on Spotify
nalha: spotify quality is decent if you mess with the settings, the defaults are awful
offbeatwitch: yeah i mean the reason big companies are trying to lock down podcasting is not for the benefit of podcasts but for the benefit of companies and their shareholders
CaptainSpam: Yeah, any podcasts I've got are accessible via RSS, and I'd rather not do goofy things otherwise.
johnalogue: "RSS" is a weird thing I barely remember from years ago
johnalogue: fight the google!
TemporallyAwry: I'm still kinda shocked how a lot of older-professionals need trained to not call Internet Hosted Video "YouTubes"
RockPusher: then again, my idea of my media centre software is I play the file on the fileshare - so old man shouts at cloud
nalha: its funny how much random stuff email is being used for
RealGamerCow: Hello everyone. New wheel today? I see shifting
LuveenW: weirdly enough, Google Podcasts is a surprisingly good app and pulls none of the shenanigans that Spotify is engaging in
Molladia: an hour and a half work call later I'm back, Did Ian set a good time on the other track?
saberpilot: so is RSS your digital newtype friend?
nalha: we use emails a lot at work to transfer information between companies
RockPusher: !quote 6629
LRRbot: Quote #6629: "Hi, I'm Ian and I'm angry about software and computers." —Ian [2019-12-15]
johnalogue: time to buy a lot of music and figure out how RSS can fix my life now
Mangledpixel: I remember being able to get my YouTube feed as RSS, don't know if that's still available
RockPusher: Applicable to both Ian and I
AHayes31: Surprised you are not doing a Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona race
johnalogue: It's like browser vs. app, browsers have the motive to serve the user while the app puts the website in full control of your experience
CaptainSpam: We just do Le Mans for our 24 hour races. :-)
TehAmelie: i can see the appeal of RSS but i always liked wandering around websites more
offbeatwitch: RSS could do with some better "push"-style communication
nalha: its probably not very hard to create a youtube RSS feed with a web crawler or some API
offbeatwitch: since right now you just have to poll things
Mangledpixel: nalha yeh, but it used to be a service that YouTube itself provided
DarkMorford: I'm still trying to find a good desktop RSS app. I used to use one called FeedDemon but the developer stopped working on it a few years ago.
Mangledpixel: that may have been before Google bought YouTube, now that I come to think of it
Hexi_Lexi: Ian, i have once semi-jokingly described you to a friend as "the living embodiment of my boujee linguistics podcasts"
johnalogue: I mean if y'all like forgotten tech I have a Pebble 2 e-ink smartwatch. Wouldn't trade it for a new samsung OLED thingy.
nalha: you mean like reddit? :P
RockPusher: change channel id as needed
Mangledpixel: RockPusher ah, but can I get my 'Subscriptions' feed that way? That's what I used to have
CaptainSpam: There's reasons I'm writing a JavaScript webpage widget for my Mastodon feed...
RockPusher: Mangledpixel no idea - I don't use YouTube with an account :D
PixelArtDragon: Th #1 thing you can do to improve your Twitter experience is to stop using Twitter's "top tweets"
Mangledpixel: RockPusher fair enough
johnalogue: people who take the effort to manage their own content motivate the "easy" options to be less blatantly evil
PharaohBender27: i.e. most social media networks
DarkMorford: The rare times I need to Twitter I just use TweetDeck.
MortifiedPenguins: another thing that improves twitter is using anything but twitter to access it
TemporallyAwry: "If something is free, it's because you're the product"
LuveenW: @offbeatwitch RSS is just a standard for syndicating web content. Apps that subscribe to the RSS feeds can notify users when new content is made available said feeds. There are plenty of apps that do that, e.g. the erstwhile Google Reader or podcast apps like Player FM
texasman208: Chat: ruiner of BPs
texasman208: PB
nalha: you need the chat projected on your windscreen
offbeatwitch: yes, i know how it works
KeytarCat: I adore when Ian talks about freedom of use and the like
VmKid: I technically use TweetDeck, through an app called Tweeten.
VmKid: It tweaks a bunch of things to make TweetDeck better.
RockPusher: Let's build an OS into a browser on top of an OS
RockPusher: wait wat?
RockPusher: jlrrFacepalm
offbeatwitch: the point is that those services are "polling" the endpoints - which is fine, but i'm curious if I could design an extension that lets the feeds "push" to consumers better
johnalogue: I don't mind accessing most things through the browser, it's when everything is an app that completely controls the UX against you that I hate
LuveenW: Ian that's all of why I will never sign up for Adobe Creative Cloud and continue using the desktop versions of their software
johnalogue: and most apps are just browsers inside anyways!
Texan_Reverend: Ian, how are you finding the throw distance on the shifter?
nalha: @RockPusher that exists
offbeatwitch: nowadays anyway
VmKid: As much as I love Discord, it is basically a webpage in an app.
TehAmelie: unless you use the web version :3
MortifiedPenguins: is just chrome, you can access the dev tools really easyily
RockPusher: nalha it's called all modern browsers now, because Google and their bad ideas
Molladia: @VmKid why are you using Discord via a browser instead of downloading it?
KevinTheShark: Im still bitter about what adobe did to flash
johnalogue: Flash was a terrible platform with great content AFAIK
VmKid: I'm using the Desktop version, Molladia.
VmKid: It's just that Electron is basically a browser that runs a single webpage
MortifiedPenguins: having used flash it's a cursed tool that just happened to produce some good stuff
rocketjohn: The desktop version is still basically a one-site webbrowser
johnalogue: the problem is anyone doing the equivalent of Flash game development now is going to make a mobile game or a Steam indie title
rocketjohn: same with slack
Molladia: VMKid sorry, musinderstood
nalha: shared libraries? in js? lol
KevinTheShark: thats fair @johnalogue I appreciated how accessible it was for content creators, which was limited by adove
RockPusher: I'll use the web apps in the browser since the browsers have reasonable sandboxing - Electron apps, not so much
johnalogue: Chrome isn't even the best Chromium browser anymore!
MortifiedPenguins: unity is basically the new flash
rocketjohn: JS can do everything, and definitely shouldn't
LuveenW: in Slack and Discord's defense, the web versions tend to be less usable experiences than the desktop ones. At least imho
CaptainSpam: Coding in Flash was sort of a nightmare when I had to do it...
VmKid: But everyone has 32gb of RAM nowadays, right? Kappa
PixelArtDragon: If you think about it, Flash is a really interesting microcosm of the problems with anticompetitive practices in the tech industry
Avidus_Mauch subscribed with Prime. They've subscribed for 36 months!
LRRbot: lrrSPOT Thanks for subscribing, Avidus_Mauch! (Today's storm count: 13)
DarkMorford: Flash? Nah. Now how about Silverlight, folks? Kappa
LuveenW: The version of Lightroom I use is clearly written in Adobe Flex. I've programmed in Adobe Flex, and let me tell you it isn't fun at all.
nalha: this isnt exactly the most chat friendly game :P
RockPusher: As is Tradition tiltyhEXTREME
LunarRai: @DarkMorford What year is it?!
xTJPBQdfNHA7qUxeTd5Uy9gV: fast laps are overrated
johnalogue: HTML can also be like Flash, it's just that again, most content creators would make a different thing entirely when they woulkd've made flash games once
PixelArtDragon: Shockwave!
irs_debt_collector: I don't keep my eyes on the road, why do you?
PharaohBender27: katesLol
nalha: slow laps just mean you get to enjoy the game more
KevinTheShark: We appreciate your input and well thought out arguments Ian
electric_claire: How many bosses have you beaten, Ian?
texasman208: Oh man I just went to the past
LuveenW: Actionscript, anyone? LUL
Driosenth: shockwave! Anyone remember TMBG clock radio?
VmKid: @DarkMorford As someone who works in medical IT, I'm amazed that Silverlight is still around. Also it can get bent.
CaptainSpam: I had to work with the embedded version of Flash in my last job. We did NOT appreciate it.
johnalogue: it's okay I'm a horribly understimulated wannabe engineer and I need tech discourse to breathe
Molladia: I dont understand the complaints with Discord, but I only have 3 servers, LRR, My own and my best friends.
TehAmelie: remember Sakupen? the Leonardo da Vinci of Flash, people called him
CaptainSpam: Apparently ActionScript 3.0 fixed a lot of our gripes, but Adobe didn't make an embedded version of a Flash version that supported it.
PixelArtDragon: You know what's REALLY weird? Java was largely designed for embedding in webpages
TehAmelie: okay, it was maybe just me
LuveenW: @TehAmelie d'aww
DarkMorford: Anyone else remember the old "Radiskull & Devil Doll" Shockwave cartoons?
johnalogue: @TehAmelie not familiar, what are they known for making?
TehAmelie: Dad's Home
irs_debt_collector: same
TehAmelie: and one other thing i can't remember
rocketjohn: Yeah. Discord = RIP forums.
TehAmelie: much like Da Vinci did Mona Lisa and that other painting
LuveenW: I mute notifications on basically all the Discord channels I'm subscribed to
rocketjohn: they have threading now, sort of. Much like twitch does. And it sucks, much like twitch does.
nalha: I am so hyped for the new gran turismo, if its good I'm going to spend soo much time with it
PixelArtDragon: Discord is a replacement for forums when they shouldn't be competitors
VmKid: I don't know if Discord is RIP forums as much as it is RIP IRC.
niccus: i grew up with IRC so it's a pretty natural translation
PharaohBender27: I miss forums. Before I got on Twitch, I was pretty active on the Cracked.com forums for much of the 2010s.
johnalogue: someday it'll be safe and everyone in this chat can meet up and spend 3 days drinking coffee and fixing the world's problems
Max_Mckayful: Discord feels like a pub, except all conversations are equally loud
rocketjohn: It's killed the LRR Forum
DarkMorford: Yeah, Discord is basically a fancy wrapper around IRC.
Painfully_Dyslexic: I feel I'm too old for Discord and I'm only 27, I just don't get it
VmKid: You can search within a single Discord server tho
johnalogue: Discord and Forums should coexist!
RockPusher: That Chromium can get away with actively lying about the URL in the address bar and this is not considered a bug, and no-one cares enough or has the resources to do anything about it is pretty much the death-knell for the web :(
LuveenW: oh gosh, don't even get me started on how slow Discord notifications are. That sure became apparent when I was trying to keep abreast of when GPUs restocked.
johnalogue: @Mangledpixel Not as well-organized, though
niccus: not being googlable is conditionally an appeal for some
rocketjohn: you can search discord, but you can't search discord with a web search engine
rocketjohn: it's a silo
CaptainSpam: Yeah, I consider Discord/IRC/etc to be more of a live-chat sort of realm, where forums/newsgroups/etc are more of async-chat, and the two have different uses.
rocketjohn: which is completely useless.
nalha: yea I hate community discords, I want to be able to lurk a ton of old content
mizzytastic: @Mangledpixel if you are already on the server and you can remember the exact wording you are looking for
Molladia: I use LRR discord for single question instant response only,
irs_debt_collector: I did not expect Discords shortcommings to be on this stream
TehAmelie: i saw a software thingy that could make a forum based on a discord. but when i told the discord about that they thought it would sow discord or something
texasman208: yeah googling for ocscure tech fixes from 15 years ago is going to get real awakward soon
MehallD: I wish new pinned messages popped up like a twitch sub reminder whenever you visited a channel
johnalogue: but forums let you find questions that have already been answered!
mitomanox: !next
LRRbot: Next scheduled stream: LoadingReadyLIVE (A Variety show, LoadingReadyRun Style!) at Sat 06:00 PM PST (2:48 from now).
johnalogue: the loss of human knowledge!
RealGamerCow: I'm a weirdo, I think people should be able to indicate if what they are putting on the internet should be ephemeral or permanent
mitomanox: are you introducing Loading Ready Live driving today, Ian?
KevinTheShark: Discord in a way certainly seems like a step back
irs_debt_collector: agreed
MortifiedPenguins: there's still stack for that kind of thing but I get that it's not the same as forums
nalha: this is why i hang on reddit so much, its at least searchable for old posts
KeytarCat: Oh, is LRL today??
KeytarCat: Cripes, I have D&D
irs_debt_collector: I had no clue
rocketjohn: twitch chat is also a bad wrap around IRC, and it shows.
johnalogue: strong agree
Mangledpixel: ah, so Fleets :p
PixelArtDragon: Discord really is supposed to be a replacement for IRC but most people getting involved in Discord never experienced IRC
johnalogue: @Mangledpixel Nooooooooooo
Mangledpixel: hehehehe
Max_Mckayful: I believe!
MortifiedPenguins: haha, Ian, no. you have no idea the age of some software I worked on. that would be nightmarish.
mr_yarget: drive forever *clap clap clapclapclap*
LuveenW: that has its own complications - we need historical record of certain data. Like, say, what a politician promised 5 years ago
nalha: @PixelArtDragon send them to bash.org lol
CaptainSpam: However, I'd say more that Reddit killed forums, not Discord. Perhaps not the LRR forums, but the general idea.
Molladia: clap three times to give a forum it's user base back
Painfully_Dyslexic: Wish me luck I just submitted 6 job applications
SnowBuddy18: good luck
rocketjohn: the LRR forum was definitely killed by the LRR discord
johnalogue: @LuveenW Anything on the internet can be preserved if someone wants it, but whether the original content is meant to be preserved can still matter
RockPusher: Good luck Painfully_Dyslexic !
PharaohBender27: Good luck, @Painfully_Dyslexic ! lrrHEART
johnalogue: @Painfully_Dyslexic Good luck!
TehAmelie: if everyone here posted on the LRR forum right now it could start a conversation
RealGamerCow: Because I'm really not a fan of people getting stuff dug up from 10 or 20 or more years ago that they said on the Internet. I probably said stuff on newsgroups in 1995 that I'd be ashamed of now, and that is theoretically still out there somewhere.
Wolfstrike_NL: Painfully_Dyslexic , no need for luck, you got this!
MortifiedPenguins: I worked on a database that was basically pre-internet and it was basically hell. The only documentation was one book that the company held on to dear life for.
MehallD: Good luck Painfaully Dyslexic!
Clockwork_Penguin: I have conflicitng feelings on stuff like retention. On the one hand privacy and allowing people to control their own data. On the other hand accountability and keeping reciepts/ archiving important history.
PixelArtDragon: Maybe one of the big barriers is the hosting- it's relatively easy to get a Discord server hosted, getting a forum hosted takes a lot more work
Clockwork_Penguin: It's something we've seen with the EU's right to be forgotten.
VmKid: I applied for one job earlier this week, hopefully I get a call 🤞
PharaohBender27: @Clockwork_Penguin Same here
rocketjohn: You can't cancel people for dumb crap they say in their youth if you let it expire..
irs_debt_collector: I don't think that way
RealGamerCow: Clockwork_Penguin oh definitely, there would need to be rules and regulations about public servants and how that information is handled.
rocketjohn: and then people built applications
johnalogue: like Tesla's "new" awful controls that make me hate
Clockwork_Penguin: Which is often used by companies burrying bad PR, and is quite hard to access for ordinary people trying to for e.g. defend against abuse
awowadas: IS THIS DONNINGTON?
SnowBuddy18: old man Ian
nalha: open source everything!
KeytarCat: I just named a character Claire Aoyama because I couldn't get away from Claire Redfield
RealGamerCow: Just wait until every country and/or state has something like the Great Firewall of China.
Max_Mckayful: I love how the throttle noises match Ian's emphatic opinions
MortifiedPenguins: or it can just pretend to be new and get a bunch of VC go bust and continue to get a bunch of VC
johnalogue: USB > whatever the hell Apple is using
RealGamerCow: Or Russia's Internet killswitch
MortifiedPenguins: just like WeWork
VmKid: @johnalogue Firewire, I think? Kappa
PixelArtDragon: You've just put words to a whole lot of my generalized feeling of "why I don't want to work in most of the tech industry"
FoxFyr: @johnalogue so usb>usb-c?
RockPusher: There are no new technologies - a good talk I keep sending people to to highlight that fact: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVZxkFAIziA
irs_debt_collector: why is this the main topic?
sacrenos: Ian I drank way too much whiskey to have this discussion...
Driosenth: remember when Web 2.0 was all about API's and apps talked to each other. Remember how bots abused and corporations took away features little by little. Pepperidge Farms Remembers.
TehAmelie: as a historian, i would say nothing people say or do expires. but having a clear record makes it easy to show if you don't stand by things you once said
johnalogue: @FoxFyr USB-c is USB, apple has gross proprietary stuff
awowadas: pls no punterino
RockPusher: (at least in computing, no recently)
CaptainSpam: The race director apparently doesn't care about anyone ELSE running YOU off the road...
Juliamon: irs_debt_collector Welcome to LRR, where gameplay is secondary to irrelevant discussion
irs_debt_collector: I am so confused
Max_Mckayful: @PixelArtDragon I feel that. It's not so much "what I do", it's "the context they want me to do it in"
LordZarano: imo, society really needs to learn to stop caring about dumb things people said when they were young
nalha: lets discuss gameplay, which way do you want ian to turn next?
MortifiedPenguins: gosh, so much of software dev is busy work. Machine learning isn't even new, it's just statistics with more data, more time and more processing power
johnalogue: Samsung's new phone makes me angry and I feel like I'll exhaust myself explaining why
Driosenth: @nalha go left
irs_debt_collector: ahhhh, I see
johnalogue: 5 cameras < durability, battery life, repairability, cost refinements.
niccus: without forums, we wouldn't have the dumbest boy alive
irs_debt_collector: I agree with you there
Clockwork_Penguin: Technology lets us make powerful mistakes :P
PharaohBender27: People in the Victorian Era thought industrial progress was inherently good, and would bring about world peace - then World War I happened
Molladia: niccus how did Forums produce Trump?
Juliamon: We could always topic-shift into the current anime season...
KeytarCat: Tech should be a tool to affect change, but still requires a human hand to guide it so we don't just kill people
LuveenW: @johnalogue not to mention no SD card slot or headphone jack!
PixelArtDragon: Tech is really good a making many multifaceted problems into purely human ones, but we still haven't really figured out those human problems.
Max_Mckayful: any problem? "let's make an app for it!" ..... uhg
Driosenth: I believe it is feasible that humans *could* wrangle technology back to a force of good. But I don't see it as likely
RockPusher: I was once described by a co-worker as a neo-luddite as a label for my rants about IRC, Usenet and the like
KeytarCat: "there's an app for that!"
rocketjohn: ew. As few holes in my phone as possible pls.
RockPusher: which I quite like
TehAmelie: the future is already here, just unevenly distributed, as it were
LuveenW: @Juliamon have you been keeping up with Attack on Titan? I'm waiting until all the episodes are out because I can't bear the wait between them
nalha: a good example of marketing the wrong features is super high dpi values on gaming mice
johnalogue: The original point of liberalism put a great deal of emphasis on the mechanics of state! That's why the American revolution wasn't *actually* just angry farmers who hated taxes, there was political theory
ivi1116: hello
MortifiedPenguins: @TehAmelie just like in the marvel movies :P
Juliamon: LuveenW Nah, it's not my speed
RockPusher has a good anti-WYSIWYG rant too :D
Driosenth: @nalha what about mice polling intervals?
Juliamon: hello ivi1116
LuveenW: @Juliamon gotcha - what stuff are you excited for this season?
LRRTwitter: @LRRMtG> Part 1 of the Kaldheim Canadian Highlander Set Review episode of North 100 is live! Hear what Serge, Jeremy, and Wheeler have to say about everything White and Blue have to offer. https://youtu.be/6RFcwciLhRU || https://www.twitter.com/LRRMtG/status/1355657279408807936
irs_debt_collector: funny, I actually only own a flip phone, and one of the Ipods that only plays music.
johnalogue: If we neglect the mechanics of democracy we will lose its benefits.
PixelArtDragon: @RockPusher I'm quite curious about that
rocketjohn: RockPusher is it around the fact that it never is?
KeytarCat: I don't even know what that is
Molladia: Will the new Evangelion be an actual movie/episode or another mindf*ck
johnalogue: I prefer WYSIHYD
Wolfstrike_NL: Fifth! not bad
ContingentCat: @Molladia por que no los dos?
MortifiedPenguins: WYSIWYG has it's uses
MortifiedPenguins: they're justoften poorly applied
RockPusher: See - if it had stayed in DTP then it would probably be okay - primarily Word became a thing and now document management is terrible
RockPusher: document creation should be separate from document design and layout
PixelArtDragon: Is this why Apple products are the computers of choice for video editors and graphic artists?
rocketjohn: aha, rain. Are yoiu still on slicks ian?
PharaohBender27 tugs on collar
PixelArtDragon: There's a reason why there's a whole other product for document design, Microsoft Publisher
RealGamerCow: oh god I hear you on that one, I have end users that are designing chips and they hate that they can't get a good monitor. Windows apps are also HORRIBLE about using multithreading. I'm looking at you, Solidworks.
PharaohBender27 *tugs on collar nervously
nalha: is that still true? apple have been screwing up a lot recent years
ContingentCat: yikes that would be like writing something long in photoshop
KevinTheShark: What we're saying is, is that we cant have a one size fits all economy in technical engineering
LRRTwitter: @loadingreadyrun> Reminder that tonight at 6PM Pacific is our monthly live variety show LoadingReadyLIVE! If I had to pick three words to describe tonight's show? | Pretty damn weird. | We hope to see y'all there! | Tune in at http://twitch.tv/loadingreadyrun :D || https://www.twitter.com/loadingreadyrun/status/1355657995753934850
MortifiedPenguins: this will be the year we bring linux to the desktop :P
RockPusher: PharaohBender27 no need to be nervous - rants are directed at the industry in general, the ants in the anthill aren't the problem lrrAWESOME
Clockwork_Penguin: These days I pretty much just use Word as a temporary holding ground for screenshots I need to bung into emails.
LadyAiluros: Apple Keybords suuuuuck yes
rocketjohn: MortifiedPenguins Every year has been that year, and it is never that year, and never will be
RealGamerCow: I *hate* that everything on the web is now formatted for mobile. It's like reading newspapers that are one column wide.
johnalogue: Apple is all about mobile now
VmKid: Apple keyboards in general suck
nalha: yea i get double bb all the time on my work macbook keyboard
aiamethyst: oh yeah, I have a macbook for work and it's constantly double typing and missing letters, it's so frustrating
johnalogue: "What's a computer?"
RockPusher: MortifiedPenguins it's been the year of linux on the desktop for me for quite a few years now :D
LadyAiluros: i just want a user-grade upgradeable tower that doesn't cost more than my car
TehAmelie: i'm writing two books in open source-Word. . .
MortifiedPenguins: @rocketjohn you discovered the joke, you get a rpize
PharaohBender27: @RockPusher Oh I mean because I've done formatting for my holiday/end-of-year cards in Word. Unless I misunderstood what was meant by "formatting" and "layout design" there
nalha: lol the last few macOS updates have been a mess
rocketjohn: MortifiedPenguins is my prize a sarcasm signifier?
johnalogue: looking forward to the Wooting Hall-Effect analog keyboard...
FoxFyr: THe M-1 is honestly kinda stupid, I have a coworker who got his macbook a couple months before me and I can bounce final cut files in like 1/8th of the time
LadyAiluros: @nalha yeah I'm on Mjoave still and will sink my claws in as long as I can
FoxFyr: Stupid in a good way*
CaptainSpam: Eh, personally, I just use a mess of whatever technology works for me at the time. Kappa
RockPusher: PharaohBender27 perfectly fine - regular people do all the time - you use the tools you have available (even if they are bad) because of the sins the industry made decades ago
nalha: i updated from mojave the other day
LadyAiluros: I still have 32-bit apps
irs_debt_collector: when are the MTG streams?
FoxFyr: I will say though I miss snow leopard more than any other os
LuveenW: @LadyAiluros from Apple specifically, or in general? Because it is possible to build a very decent professional/creator PC for about $500
Juliamon: !schedule
LRRbot: Want to know what's coming up? Check out https://loadingreadyrun.com/live for an interactive schedule, or http://lrr.cc/schedule for a Google Calendar version.
LadyAiluros: I am looking at Hackintosh now
MortifiedPenguins: @RockPusher I would love linux on the desktop it just never does quite what I want it to and to get it too is too much work.
RealGamerCow: Microsoft is now only supporting security updates for 18 month-old OSes. Which is a huge pain in my ass to update 5000+ machines
LadyAiluros: @LunarRai Apple. I am DEEP in the ecosystem
LadyAiluros: I need to upgrade from the 2012 cheesegrater
SquareDotCube: If someone wants to step, now's the time to make a new OS, even if it's a Linux or BSD branch
rocketjohn: I used to run linux desktop. And then i realised I wanted to spend more time actually working with my computer than making it work
nalha: im switching to linux for work next time
VmKid: Hot Take: Apple needs to get over their use of slightly nonstandard keyboard layouts and take the Command key out behind the shed and start using Ctrl, Alt, and Meta like everyone else.
LadyAiluros: if they don't make a user-grade tower I have no real choice
RockPusher: MortifiedPenguins anything specifically? - things have been real good in the last couple years
LunarRai: @LadyAiluros Did you @ the wrong person? I've completely forgotten anything I might have said to be replied to.
CaptainSpam: I've been happy with Linux on the desktop for quite a while now, and it's worked incredibly well for me. Of course, I'm the weirdo here, I guess. :p
LadyAiluros: probbly yeah
LadyAiluros: speaking of Apple keyboards :P
MortifiedPenguins: @RockPusher just a lot of little things really
TheMerricat: As much as I love the 'idea' of Linux, I've never once managed to install it and have it be more than "whelp I'll spend this week configuring it so I can use it for real next week" on infinite loop.
LadyAiluros: I just want an Apple tower that I can fiddle with
rocketjohn: TheMerricat that is the linux desktop experience.
LuveenW: @VmKid they do at least make those three keys OS remappable, so that specifically has become more of a minor annoyance
Texan_Reverend: I would actually vouch for a base Mac Mini over a cheap Hackintosh now. The new ARM Mac systems are incredibly good.
LadyAiluros: for streaming and transcoding tho?
FoxFyr: Can confirm the M-1Macbook pro is very fast, but everything about the hardward built in is unpleasant. Keyboard is awful and I dislike the trackpad and input layout
johnalogue: I've heard one of their recent iPad pros or whatever is basically an aluminum bag with a screen in order to be light and thin...not much faith in that engineering philosophy.
LuveenW: Launchbar is pretty unbeatable. The closest analogue for Windows I've found is Listary
VmKid: Desktop Linux works really well in my experience, and it worked great for my mom who just really needed a Chromebook. So we bought her one for Hanukkah after her old laptop crapped itself.
nartin9: I don't like quicksilver
sacrenos: I'm a windows desktop guy all the way. then again, I am a Dynamics 365 CE programmer so yea... I sold my soul to MS a long time ago. Still run unix on my server though :P
LadyAiluros: I need something to drive my streaming and ideally to be able to stream and playo n the same machine
Micsig: Time for wets?
PixelArtDragon: The only time I would use Linux on a desktop is if I want it to use it for developing server software and want similar environments
DarkMorford: I need to spend some more time with desktop Linux. Big fan of Debian for server machines, but I'm pretty much Windows-only for my day-to-day stuff.
LadyAiluros: I mean I have a Macintosh Plus upstairs too :P
Texan_Reverend: @ladyailuros Absolutely. It's worth looking at some of the review videos about video editing on the new Mini. I think there might be a couple about streaming, too.
irs_debt_collector: this is the first stream I have ever been to that is talking about prices and the issues of technology.
CaptainSpam still patiently waits for System76 to release their AMD line of laptops...
VmKid: Honestly, I'm of the opinion that people should use the OS that lets them do the things they need to do. The OS flamewars of old really need to fuck off already.
SquareDotCube: at least we're not at the Dr.Watson stage anymore
LordZarano: TTSF: Arch install when?
Juliamon: irs_debt_collector You'll want to follow twitch.tv/tiltyhouse as well then, he streams there as well
LadyAiluros: @Texan_Reverend will it drive modded minecraft and OBS transcoding on the same machine?
PixelArtDragon: My controversial take on the VIM vs EMACS debate is "VSCode"
cmdrud87: Regarding the kexbinds, I recently tried to explain to a colleague of mine where she could see what cookies were embedded in a website and I nearly despaired since ctrl+u, which is the shortcut for PCs does nor work
nartin9: Mac for me is total trash I have no use for mac. Windows and Linus are what I use
MortifiedPenguins: @PixelArtDragon correct
RockPusher: I'm on Kubuntu - so I have a desktop environment that essentially matches my old Windows setup - multimonitor on Nvidia is fine - Steam and Proton gives me gaming almost equivalent to Windows
LadyAiluros: I would also have to run a Snow Leopard VM to run old mac games :P
MortifiedPenguins: a code editor shouldn't need books to understand how it works
nalha: or maybe its time to look into a thin client pc and a full desktop environment in the cloud
rocketjohn: My controversial take on every software vs software take is shut up and use what you like, and stop trying to persuade other people to change.
LuveenW: Alfred just doesn't play at the same level imho. It's also pretty telling that you have all these dock apps in other OSes trying to replicate Launchbar down to that icon zoom on mouse hover
VmKid: TBH I'd only ever really buy a Mac for myself if I had to start building iOS apps for work.
VmKid: *sips his Egmelt*
CaptainSpam: @RockPusher Same here. I've been happy with KDE for quite a while, and Steam's surprise choice to support Linux all those years ago has REALLY helped.
LadyAiluros: I went Mac when Windows 8 was the only other choice and I've never looked back
johnalogue: Motorcycle channel Fortnine did a recent video pointing out that a modern Honda bike costs about the same as an old one and has better value...but cost of living went up without wages following. Modern tech needs to offer incrementally better performance but with more affordability!
LadyAiluros: yeah like all my software i've purchasd is Mac so I want to stay Mac
niccus: what if we go back to telnet and teletext
LadyAiluros: ^
jedi_master_zll: I use nano when I have to do command line editing.
LuveenW: Atom is pretty cool too. My IDE of choice atm is IntelliJ IDEA. It is seamless and slick
johnalogue: That's why Royal Enfield is growing and Harley-Davidson is dying
FoxFyr: If I didn't need Logic and Final cut I wouldn't really feel the need to ever boot a mac, but It still feels silly to watch people bash the platform, because its useful for a lot of people that don't need customization
SnowBuddy18: the egmelt guy is back after wizards repairing our car in practice
CaptainSpam: I've heard your opinion on Vim before, Ian, but I'll still say I use Vim as my usual text editor (barring things that significantly benefit from something like an IDE). :-)
RockPusher: CaptainSpam for all their sins, Valve are very good to us - the work they are currently doing on the new runtime and containerising the games alongside Proton is just fantastic stuff
MortifiedPenguins: like, I would be more into apple stuff it if it was more accessible price wise, they make a closed eco-system and it works, but it's always top of the price cost.
SquareDotCube: Yeah, I get the like for Apple because of the quality parts and easy interface, but it's not very accessible to a power user or someone who'd prefer self-repair.
KevinTheShark: Informing people about options is far superior to forcing them to an opinion
KodeMage: lol, no sending cleartext on a wire someone can sniff?
LadyAiluros: that's fair, penguin
MehallD: Due to supporting Avaya software, I've had to get better with vi, as nothing else comes installed, and getting sign off for support for anything else at customer, support, and vendor level is a pain, but I just know the basics
RockPusher: CaptainSpam the gaming experience of Windows games on Steam will soon be technically superior to on Windows itself
MehallD: if I could I'd use nano everywhere
LuveenW: I've seen people get quite crazy with macros in vim and emacs
KodeMage: anyone remember when firesheep worked on like facebook? sending all that data in the clear smh
johnalogue: @MortifiedPenguins A simple, rugged entry-level option is critical to any product ecosystem that wants a broad userbase
rocketjohn: I used to compose emails in vim, with the pine email client.
rocketjohn: that was a very long time ago though.
LadyAiluros: yes
MortifiedPenguins: @johnalogue apple doesn't have one and I'm poor :P
ContingentCat: I'm curious about Apple stuff but I've always used Windows and android, and it's so expensive to switch
Clockwork_Penguin: Gotta give some love to notepad++
RockPusher: Ah, Eudora
rocketjohn: I remember supporting eudora.
RockPusher: that was a long time ago
KodeMage: vim, emacs, pico, etc, they're all still around. I've upgraded to one called Atom that's helping me organize my RPG notes.
rocketjohn: i remember people continually refering to it as endora
LuveenW: ah, this takes me back to when I'd tmux into six different server environments and simultaneously edit config files in vim across all of them like an omega-level hax0r
MortifiedPenguins: remember email clients!
texasman208: tell us a story Ian
SketchyDetails: Random question: has anyone ever gotten the mail daemon feature of NetHack working?
RockPusher: *nix
DarkMorford: @Clockwork_Penguin Yeah. VS Code is really nice, but I still use N++ a lot just because it's so quick to start up.
LadyAiluros: *nix <3
johnalogue: @MortifiedPenguins It lets them upsell you on fragile jewelry
KodeMage: android is linux, so it's alive and well
RockPusher: Oh it doesn't worry just you Ian
CaptainSpam: The concept of Unix is forgetting to get the right tires.
CaptainSpam: Wait, no...
KidAmn: it *looked* like it put wets on? They certainly had some hefty tread.
johnalogue: As a former tire tech, I can confirm incorrect tire choices will make or break your unix experience
RockPusher: Systemd is a bad solution to a bunch of small problems
TheMerricat: PS for those who remember Eudora - "On May 22, 2018, after five years of discussion with Qualcomm, the Computer History Museum acquired full ownership of the source code, the Eudora trademarks, copyrights, and domain names. The transfer agreement from Qualcomm also allowed the Computer History Museum to publish the source code under the BSD open source license."
rocketjohn: ah, the glory of the | character
CaptainSpam: I generally point to the concept of tarballs (*.tar.gz, *.tar.bz2, etc) as an example of the Unix philosophy.
PixelArtDragon: So I find that to actually have been pretty well done with Powershell
MortifiedPenguins: I always get the order for | mixed up
DarkMorford: "Linux: Get piped!" Kappa
rocketjohn: ls | cat > filelist.txt
PixelArtDragon: ls dir | grep myfile > output.txt
nalha: stdin <3
rocketjohn: catalog
CaptainSpam: tar: Tape ARchive, bundles the files together. gz, bz2, xz, etc: Compression. You can swap out compression easily if a better one is found, and it doesn't need to be integrated into tar.
PixelArtDragon: long_ass_output | less
yalc321: Yakuza got a driving mini game? Neat
MehallD: no, cat is definitely short for concatenate
rocketjohn: I used to remember awk and sed off the top of my head
KeytarCat: I love concatenate. It just tacks the info onto the end of the requested location
rocketjohn: oh, my bad
johnalogue: shove that cat
sacrenos: windows is basically the same...
KeytarCat: I remember using it when I worked with Excel for a semester
TheMerricat: Command Line Life 4ver!!
MehallD: man, getting used to handling hardware as files was hard to get used to
CaptainSpam: cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp Kappa
RockPusher: tail -f logfile | grep -i "keyword" > filteredlog
LuveenW: @johnalogue or pet it. You know, if you want to be nice Kappa
RealGamerCow: I really wish Windows had gone forward with their proposed complete file system and command rebuild from scratch, instead of building on the DOS 6.1 and Windows 95 roots that they've been going on 25 years
MehallD: sudo rm-rf * /
johnalogue: right, I learned a bit about the Linux filesystem I never figured out on my own because I've been doing a Google IT support course
MehallD: woops, missed a space
johnalogue: it's wild that input devices are *files*
Molladia: dir with the /w modifier was a time saver when I learned of it
MehallD: (do not use thatc ommand)
RockPusher: CaptainSpam ah,I remember that well - fun times
KeytarCat: Chat has become unreadable to me, but I'm still having fun ldydrgS ljgami1Kwaken
rocketjohn: grep with context of a file is very useful too
RealGamerCow: Too bad sudo got hacked.
PixelArtDragon: @MehallD Don't forget --no-preserve-root
rocketjohn: and you can't use it as that.
rocketjohn: which is super frustrating
TheMerricat: @RealGamerCow I'd had have a cow, unless they managed to ensure some sort of compatibliy layer for stuff expecting the old stuff. As much as people want a 'new' setup for MS OS, no advocating it ever seem to remember or realize how much legacy shit is out there that folk have to support.
SquareDotCube: well get angry at the people who find security exploits and made viruses then
RockPusher: RealGamerCow vulns happen all the time - yes, that one was interesting - but not particularly special
rocketjohn: there are ways to fix that and still let me use my hardware, SquareDotCube - that's not a correct take
LadyAiluros: there will always be script kiddies
PixelArtDragon: You can't patch an exploit if you don't know it exists, and knowing is half the battle
Vector_Zero subscribed with Prime. They've subscribed for 28 months!
Vector_Zero: 28 months? That’s nearly 29 months!
LRRbot: lrrSPOT Thanks for subscribing, Vector_Zero! (Today's storm count: 14)
johnalogue: Exploits are a reality of computing
Clockwork_Penguin: We can't stop people breaking developer assumptions by accident. We're never going to stop people who are actively hunting for them
RealGamerCow: TheMerricat Oh, I am truly aware, I have 3 Windows 98 computers on my network, and they are like a thorn
TheMerricat: When I was 'growing up' in the IT world the saying was "The only secure hardware is hardware that never left the box" but these days even that hardware can be 'pre' hacked.
johnalogue: When "advanced settings" are just "volume and screen brightness"
RealGamerCow: I just wish they forked out a truly professional Windows OS, and I don't mean the Shell version of Server
RealGamerCow: But MS is going FULL CLOUD now, so good luck with that.
MortifiedPenguins: the only secure hardware is a rock
PixelArtDragon: @RealGamerCow I once found Windows Server 98 production servers
johnalogue: Cloud: Someone else's computer.
RockPusher: Check in with your friendly neighbourhood government cybersecurity organisations and follow their advice :D
RealGamerCow: BTW, if you're a windows user, expect to start paying a subscription for updates in 2022.
TehAmelie: imagine if Microsoft hadn't taken over the whole OS business. might be impossible to have like, videogames that run on all systems, but also viruses
Clockwork_Penguin: Not being able to control brightness seems like an acessibility failure. Like, different people need different settings.
LuveenW: @RealGamerCow source?
PharaohBender27: @RealGamerCow Doesn't surprise me
johnalogue: @RealGamerCow What? That was rumored for 10's launch but damn
TheMerricat: There are too many powerful organizations with (rightfully) paranoid IT departments for MS to ever succeed in turning Windows into a cloud only system.
MortifiedPenguins: making people pay a sub for updates would be a security nightmare
johnalogue: "how to drive people to Linux in one easy step"
Molladia: !break
LRRbot: Remember chat, break time for the streamer, means break time for YOU, so get up, stretch, walk about a bit, and maybe get a drink or go to the toilet. Don't forget to wash your hands!
mr_yarget: change yo tires
Molladia: should we run adds?
RockPusher: For the Canadians: https://cyber.gc.ca/en/
RealGamerCow: LuveenW My microsoft rep. It's not 100% yet, but it is expected, with it being covered by a "Cloud OS" release, which will be like $10/month and get you your choice of Game Pass or O365 bundled in.
TheMerricat: @RealGamerCow And charging subs for updates would immediately draw the baleful Sauron Eye of regulation to Microsoft if they ever actually tried rolling it out fo reall.
RockPusher: CISA in the US: https://www.cisa.gov
johnalogue: Cloud is someone else's computer. I have my own dang hardware
RealGamerCow: Oh, the OS would be on your computer. Mostly.
LuveenW: That seems fraught with issues - Microsoft wouldn't want to fragment their user base by putting a price on updates. Sounds like something that came out of the same boardroom meeting that decided doubling Xbox subscription prices overnight was a good idea.
RockPusher: ASCS in Aussie: https://www.cyber.gov.au
johnalogue: I'm sure energy is wasted by putting everything into network transmissions, especially when terabytes of local storage are so cheap
Texan_Reverend: @ladyailuros I can't make guarantees about how well a Mac Mini will work for you, but here's a video from a channel that's doing a bunch of testing on the M1 Macs: https://youtu.be/RunE5mpNxLo
RockPusher: and my local one: https://www.cert.govt.nz
LadyAiluros: cool!
johnalogue: @RealGamerCow It would be on my computer, but NOT FOR LONG!
MortifiedPenguins: windows didn't want fragment thier user base so hard they gave windows 10 out for free and kept doing it way longer then they said it would.
LuveenW: Also seems like the EU and antitrust advocates would have something to say about Windows 10 updates being paywalled
LadyAiluros: heehee
johnalogue: "it's a subscription now" is how an OS gets yeeted
RealGamerCow: I'm expecting that they'll end up doing standard Windows and "Cloud Windows" as a subscription model for people that don't want to fork out $300 or whatever for an OS.
LadyAiluros: the other issue is dos it have enought USB ports
LadyAiluros: I need ... ooodles
Clockwork_Penguin: I'm not a huge fan of 'as a service' because its a move towards not owning anything and having it all be rented. And theres not many players in that space and landlords are dinks
Texan_Reverend: @ladyailuros Also, if your timeframe isn't immediate, the M1x chips coming later this year are expected to nearly double graphics perfomance.
KevinTheShark: You can chat if you want to, you can leave your race behind
Clockwork_Penguin: Like cloud would be great, if you could somehow do it as a commons
rocketjohn: well held...
johnalogue: @Clockwork_Penguin the argument is that software is always in development, etc....I hate as a service too, though. So much.
Texan_Reverend: @ladyailuros That's what USB hubs are for.
MehallD: good catch
LadyAiluros: @Texan_Reverend it really isn't yeah
FoxFyr: @LadyAiluros I've been able to run multiple midi instruments and external harddrives out of a single usb-c you shouldn't have any problems
Juliamon: rayfkDont rayfkDont rayfkDont
MortifiedPenguins: google is doing a similar trying to unfragment thier android space iirc
LadyAiluros: yeah I have SO MANY THINGS for steaming that are USB
TheMerricat: MS moving to cloud based stuff while 90% of rural America is still woefully underserved in broadband would be the equivalent of MS shooting it's own foot. There may be plenty of middle level management folk who parrot the idea that it'd go Cloud because that's really a big buzzword right now in corporate America (esp now that Covid has made WFH a real big thing) but it's not a reasonable stance and upper management knows that
mitomanox: 4 glooory
PixelArtDragon: For the glory of the Klingon Empire!
LadyAiluros: Qah'Plah!
TehAmelie: when everything is rented i expect to be paid rent for existing. instead of the circle of life we'll have the circle of rent
TheMerricat: Taxes @TehAmelie Taxed
johnalogue: eventually this will chase a lot of us more techy types into Linux and probably making our own hardware by 3D printing or something
LuveenW: @MortifiedPenguins afaik Google have essentially admitted to that being a mistake caused by lack of foresight, and attempted to remedy the situation
johnalogue: we'll all be the resistance
Clockwork_Penguin: Isn't all Nerdcore from the mid 2000s :P
the_one_and_only_kim: !schedule
LRRbot: Want to know what's coming up? Check out https://loadingreadyrun.com/live for an interactive schedule, or http://lrr.cc/schedule for a Google Calendar version.
MortifiedPenguins: @TheMerricat isn't that just called SSH and remote desktop :P
RealGamerCow: Capitalism has a big cheeseburger-tipped boner for subscription services because they are repeatable revenue.
TehAmelie: i mean, i am already paying tax on my tax paid disability pension
MehallD: i'm beginning to think this "capitalism" thing might have some issues, RealGamerCow
johnalogue: @RealGamerCow it's still hard to argue against since publishing software has repeatable costs, though
SnowBuddy18: okay, I'm here for the rest of the race, with dinner
Texan_Reverend: @ladyailuros As far as video rendering workloads, the Mac Minis have been punching wildly above their price bracket. Having all the processors, CPU, AI, and GPU, are directly connected to the RAM speeding up a lot of stuff.
CaptainSpam: "Little did Ian know, the only thing he was braking... was his pit crew's heart."
PharaohBender27: NotLikeThis
LadyAiluros: @Texan_Reverend I'm gona look at them yeah
CaptainSpam: Welp.
RealGamerCow: johnalogue MS is making HUGE money on O365 and Azure
LadyAiluros: and watching the new M!x stuff
RedPhoenixCasts: geez
FoxFyr: Mulligan?
MortifiedPenguins: @johnalogue have those costs really gone up compared to when everything was a service
PixelArtDragon: @RealGamerCow Sell someone a fish, they pay you for a day. Sell them a fish subscription service, and they pay you for the rest of their life.
DeM0nFiRe: uh... one more?
RealGamerCow: last one more
RedPhoenixCasts: Uno mas?
Wolfstrike_NL: !onemore
LRRbot: One More? uno mas? ONE MORE! En til?
Clockwork_Penguin: Sometimes I think about how feasible it would be to do libraries, but streaming.
Juliamon: rayfkDont rayfkDont rayfkDont
RockPusher: do over, do over
RealGamerCow: everyone stop being interesting!
RedPhoenixCasts: WATCH THE ROAD
TheMerricat: @MortifiedPenguins No joke, I live in Saint Louis Missouri and up till August of this year I couldn't remote into work reliably because the best connection available to me was crappy DSL that had enough lag that I could re-enact the acid trails mouse pointer effect from Win95 just by moving my mouse fast enough.
LordZarano: !look
PixelArtDragon: Ever (play it) forward, never (play it) learning
PharaohBender27: @TheMerricat Oooofff
LordZarano: !listen
LRRbot: Seriously, just never listen to chat.
RealGamerCow: Yori!
MortifiedPenguins: @TheMerricat I live in a fairly new build near london and it doesn't have a internet cable so I have to rely on shitty mobile internet. I'm struggling to stream this is 144p
yalc321: Could you imagine if IRL race drivers got to call for "Do Overs"
Texan_Reverend: @ladyailuros Also, if you already have a device to play Minecraft on, you could have a 2 computer setup with a capture card.
Clockwork_Penguin: Ah heck, its midnight. I should stop talking about tech stuff and become unconscious
SnowBuddy18: @yalc321 they do, racing is so expensive because of the time shenanigans
PixelArtDragon: @Clockwork_Penguin *looks sheepishly at clock showing 1:53AM*
johnalogue: when the tech revolution comes I'll finally have a pebble 3
DeM0nFiRe: lrrFINE
Texan_Reverend: And there are now some neat, low-latency, 1080p capture cards which only cost ~$20.
LuveenW: Ian won't respond to my texts while driving a race car at around 150 km/h? The nerve!
TehAmelie: ooh can we get into a late night rambling conversation about the illusion of consciousness now?
LadyAiluros: @Texan_Reverend true I could still play the mdded MC on the Cheesegrater and cap it on the mini
TheMerricat: Part of the reason why I was let go was because during my 'year of hell' where they basically forced me to wfh because they didn't have 'office space' for me, I got pissed and started complaining loudly about the fact that I had been promised a VPN box so I could bring my PC home and at least VPN into work instead of having to RDP in and they hadn't gotten me one after six months of asking about it.
RealGamerCow: I've had Verizon and AT&T both come at me with "Buy new 5g phones!" spiels, and I've said "Our office is 50 miles from the closest 5g spot, why on earth would I?
KodeMage: no more than usual
LadyAiluros: stay on target ...
LuveenW: @TehAmelie my soul stares out at life through the windows of the prison that is my body
yalc321: Hey @LoadingReadyRun Look at chat!
RealGamerCow: TheMerricat jesus, they should have at least spotted you a Meraki
KodeMage: ouch
SnowBuddy18: @RealGamerCow that's a difficult argument to beat
johnalogue: rude
MortifiedPenguins: a lot of rural UK still has very bad internet annoyingly
RealGamerCow: SnowBuddy18 yeah, they just kind of sputtered at it.
rocketjohn: @MortifiedPenguins Nationalise openreach
johnalogue: 5G is so annoying. Most people just want cheaper, more reliable coverage, not faster.
MortifiedPenguins: @rocketjohn but the tories could just sell it to their pals
TehAmelie: i want cheaper more reliable broadband, myself
SnowBuddy18: the speeds at this point are honestly fast enough for normal use
johnalogue: and they always say stuff like "5G will make self-driving cars possible" or something. Which is what they say about blockchain, which is also useless
RockPusher: While it was by no means perfect - our national broadband uplift here in NZ did an absolutely fantastic job
RealGamerCow: 100MB broadband should be an ubiquitous utility
rocketjohn: MortifiedPenguins well lrrEFF the Tories, obviously.
mitomanox: LRR is the cozy place for people who care about their tech lrrHEART
MortifiedPenguins: working on that @rocketjohn
johnalogue: The US is a backwards country. Taiwan barely even saw COVID without waiting for a vaccine to fix everything
RealGamerCow: Just drift that corner
johnalogue: stop driving so fast! It isn't a race, Ian!
RockPusher: vast majority of population can get fibre - I'm on fairly affordable gigabit - we are incredibly spoiled compared to many places
RealGamerCow: Start driving backwards and eff up everyone else for the next 5 minutes
PixelArtDragon: I have hot takes about net neutrality, and how it simultaneously shouldn't exist but also some of the things that people are worried about shouldn't be allowed either
SnowBuddy18: @PixelArtDragon net neutrality shouldn't NEED to exist, but greedy capitalist assholes
RealGamerCow: Fun fact, net neutrality is one of the reasons Verizon wants to push 5g, because all the throttling and monthly limits are all legal and socialized as normal in the wireless bandwidth area already.
RockPusher: PixelArtDragon as with many things, it is treated as a binary when it is a lot more complex than that
PixelArtDragon: @SnowBuddy18 Something like that, yeah. A lot of it is that "the internet has many interconnecting parts and it's really hard to enforce neutrality on all those parts"
TehAmelie: if roads had been invented today they would argue wealthier drivers should get to go faster there too
LadyAiluros: ugh no DP support on the Mini tho
RandomTrivia: That was very smooth
PixelArtDragon: @TehAmelie What do you think speeding tickets are?
LadyAiluros: prolly yeah
LadyAiluros: <-- SPOILED with her 8GB Radeon
BrowneePoints: @PixelArtDragon facetious and apples/oranges there
rocketjohn: PixelArtDragon that is exactly true, well made point.
johnalogue: speed limits are bull and everyone knows it
LadyAiluros: yeah
RandomTrivia: That was a real nice lap
LadyAiluros: the RX580
RealGamerCow: I saw an article the other day saying 8GB video cards were "too slow" and I got real depressed
MortifiedPenguins: @LadyAiluros I still have a 970 lol
Texan_Reverend: Yes, the Mini has an HDMI and a Thunderbolt. It maxes out at double monitors.
LadyAiluros: and mine is flashed for EFI bootscreen
irs_debt_collector: what happens to all that extra hard skin that guy from that ad sheds?
RockPusher: "Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C" literally from the Mac Mini Specs
LadyAiluros: oh yeah the 580 is a great card
PixelArtDragon: My computer runs DOSBOX really well Kappa
DadicusRex: !next
LRRbot: Next scheduled stream: LoadingReadyLIVE (A Variety show, LoadingReadyRun Style!) at Sat 06:00 PM PST (1:56 from now).
RandomTrivia: Moore's Law is a hell of a drug
LadyAiluros: see this discourse is why I love tuning in to Ian streams <3
MacSquizzy: If you wanted to use speeding tickets to make a net neutrality analogy it'd be like if every road was owned by a car manufacturer and the speed limit was lower for anyone driving a toyota on Ford thruways
TehAmelie: i could live with an internet where people get their licence taken away if they go too much faster than everyone else too often
Seagulyus: TehAmelie except that people all over the place drive without a license already so...
johnalogue: @MacSquizzy damn I'd hate to drive on a Ford road. They'd kill support for small cars by now
SnowBuddy18: I'm on a RX 570, it serves all my purposes
RealGamerCow: Seagulyus but that shouldn't stop the need for licenses, the vast majority of people get a license and abide by the rules of that license.
RockPusher: good hustle, good hustle
LadyAiluros: ;;
PharaohBender27: Thanks for the stream! lrrHEART
TehAmelie: probably even more if they risk getting blacklisted by every ISP
CaptainSpam: I'm planning a new desktop build, and when I do so, I usually go for future-proofing. It's served me well these past... um... five or six years?
RandomTrivia: 7th, Ian
SnowBuddy18: 7th
RockPusher: That's pretty good

irs_debt_collector: <message deleted>TODAY?
RealGamerCow: I wish there were mods for Euro and US truck simulator that added expenses and things that reduced your income.
MortifiedPenguins: thanks for the stream ian and the chat... er.... chat

johnalogue: I was gonna leave this open until the stream later but the hot mic makes that a bit awkward
TheMerricat: @johnalogue Given Ian just talked to us... is it really a hot mic?
frnknstn: little146Tired
RockPusher: johnalogue true - I also doubt I would give Ian the ability to whisper in my ear at any time lrrBEEJ
johnalogue: @TheMerricat I mean, whether or not you consider the mic hot is a matter of personal preference, I think
RandomTrivia: @TheMerricat I mic can be hot deliberately or by accident
