Lord_ZYRK: Especially with electronics, manufacturers have the plus of generally being better at sourcing genuine parts compared to a random consumer, and when you're dealing with specific signals, like with audio, the circuit design and PCB layout actually require quite a bit of know-how to maintain signal integrity without interference. . .

Driosenth: is the plural of molex moli or molus?
Arclight_Dynamo: I assume Ian's more certain his resistors are going to be close than his transistors.
Anubis169: Driosenth: is it latin-based?
Anubis169: !break
LRRbot: Remember chat, break time for the streamer, means break time for YOU, so get up, stretch, walk about a bit, and maybe get a drink or go to the toilet. Don't forget to wash your hands!
couldntpickausername: wow, I really am good at arriving just before break
couldntpickausername: does getting warm water to put my resin in count as cycling my fluids?
Anubis169: in before Ian gives an accidental 90dB gain on his voice and they hear him in Vancouver
UWDJohn: @Arclight_Dynamo should be, one of the stripes on the resistors denotes tolerance. 5% is common
LordZarano: What was the range of the transistors?
DrakoniteStreams: resistors tend to be much closer to their spec than other components. basically, we're really good at making resistors accurately
DrakoniteStreams: resistors fall on a bell curve, meaning most 5% resistors are actually within 1%
Arclight_Dynamo: @UWDJohn Ah, neat! I know next to nothing about this stuff. :D
cosmikmulder: hullo
Driosenth: @Anubis169 Molex was founded by Frederick August Krehbiel, a German, so I think Molex wouldn't change singular vs plural
Anubis169: ah ha
UWDJohn: @DrakoniteStreams I always heard that resistors are all made, measured, then binned in the appropriate tolerance category. So what you buy for 5% is the stuff that didn't pass the 1% tolerance for example.
Driosenth: oh, I don't like how that stripper is cutting into the insulation. I think it's jaw might be too tight
UWDJohn: So that the bell curve for 5%'ers has big hole in the middle.
Hewdra: Many of us would probabbly colloquialise it into Molexe if I'm perfectly honest lmao
62MGcobra: now thats a bread board
Hewdra: as the plural
LordZarano: Building this on a breadboard eh? Ha
fmerl: hah
LadyAiluros: NICE
Violentfrog: spicy
UWDJohn: AHH. About time!
LadyAiluros: Hakko
ContingentCat: ooo
fmerl: thought that might get there by today :D
Oohlgrist: wow that's a good one
compactdisco: VERY nice
Arclight_Dynamo: Ooh!
aquinas_0: that appears smile worthy :D
LadyAiluros: ohh that base
Arclight_Dynamo: That has an interesting connector.
fmerl: it is. I've had that model for... almost a decade now
LadyAiluros: variable temp?
fmerl: (or maybe the immediate predecessor)
fmerl: and it's served me very well
compactdisco: the 888D is so nice, absolutely love mine
Driosenth: Look at that connector, lots of amps can pass through those beefy pins
RandomTrivia: How long before anthropomorphised soldering iron fanart, do you think? lrrBEEJ
UWDJohn: I'm mean. Having to update software on a USB soldering pen just doesn't ring well with me. :)
LadyAiluros: she is part of the problem
LadyAiluros: wrong window
RealGamerCow: That tip is blunt
Oohlgrist: get a chisel tip on that bad boy
StageMgrRob: Just bounced in and I am guessing that someone has mentioned the moire pattern that Ian's shirt is causing in the inset shot.
PrancerInflatableReindeer subscribed at Tier 1. They've subscribed for 25 months!
PrancerInflatableReindeer: oh the moirée on the shirt is crispy ian <3
LRRbot: lrrSPOT Thanks for subscribing, PrancerInflatableReindeer! (Today's storm count: 62)
techstorm45: looks like an xlr port lol
Estyl_: yeah
UWDJohn: DIN
fmerl: ahh yeah, would recommend a chisel tip when you get around to it. and ofc there's more specialized tips available as well.
62MGcobra: i think you could plug that into my old receiver
StageMgrRob: I thought as much. Sorry if it was gone over earlier tonight.
Driosenth: I think this iron is 65W
fmerl: when the shirt on that guy causes compression to fry, that's a moire...
Oohlgrist: did it come with different tips?
UWDJohn: Just right.
Hewdra: just the tip? PogChamp
DrakoniteStreams: 750 is way too high
fmerl: oh yeah. it heats _fast_
Violentfrog: like my dad's old soldering gun. that thing got hot in like 3 seconds lol
fmerl: (it might be F by default)
Electrodyne: And you can do some pyrography with it on the next leathercraft stream :D
DrakoniteStreams: Ian, make sure to tin the hell out of that tip before using it the first time]
Driosenth: Ian, any feelings towards Fry's Electronics closing?
62MGcobra: 750 F maybe.... lrrWOW
DrakoniteStreams: 750F is way too high
Athelgar: that shirt looks so cool lol
Too_Many_Knives: Wow that thing just eats solder
DrakoniteStreams: 350-400F is the recommended range for 60/40 and 63/37 solder
Oohlgrist: is that lead-free solder?
LordZarano: If it was 750C then it would be glowing red
Manae: So someone better at circuit analysis, I may have missed this: how does this amplify the signal? Is it causing whatever you have the mic plugged in to to send more power than it would if it went directly to the mic without the amp?
Caffine1138: Doesnt look like it from that Warning Icon @Oohlgrist
UWDJohn: @drakonite that may be good for reflow ovens, but irons you need to be way higher for the solder flow.
UWDJohn: My iron is set to 750F and it's great!
RealGamerCow: I always worked with an 800F iron. Not good when touched to skin
DrakoniteStreams: @UWDJohn not if you take care of your iron tip. that is the recommended range as per solder manufacturers for hand soldering
UWDJohn: @DrakoniteStreams to each their own, of course! :)
Oohlgrist: I do like 325C for 60/40 solder
WalrusOntheCourt: Just jumped on - why not twist the two reds together with a cap for testing?
DrakoniteStreams: I stick in the 375-425 range for most stuff, depending on wire gauge, and then as high as 450-500 if dealing with a ground plane
LordZarano: Re Ian's shirt: "When a grid's misaligned With another behind That's a moiré... When the spacing is tight And the difference is slight That's a moiré..."
compactdisco: I normally keep mine at 450
RandomTrivia: @LordZarano *polite applause*
Violentfrog: bravo
fmerl: @lordzarano okay that was better than mine
UWDJohn: @manae the thing that you plug this circuit into has a biasing circuit (phantom power) allow the transistors to operate
62MGcobra: i can barely solder speaker wire together let alone electronics parts. i need to practice more before i do an ardrino project
TheSoundOfWhiteNoise: Isn't it cramping my style?
Arclight_Dynamo: "It really cramps my ass."
DrakoniteStreams: @62MGcobra speaker wire is a pain
ritchards: yeah, typically "cramping"
Qvdv: I think everyone notices, what you're finding out is who's willing to say something about it
Manae: @UWDJohn Ah, so there is external power coming in, the ins and outs aren't purely to the mic and receiving hardware?
62MGcobra: @DrakoniteStreams oh so its not just me lol
RandomTrivia: Thermodynamics pls
Qvdv: did we forget to turn on the physics before we started?
DrakoniteStreams: @62MGcobra nope. it's usually covered in a layer of corrosion, a massive heatsink, and a crappy metal that doesn't like solde
RandomTrivia: Something about the Tilty House must cause the physics to load incorrectly
Capt_clown: Physics are only in the DLC pack
UWDJohn: @manae more like the phantom power is PART of the receiving power / input stage.
62MGcobra: @DrakoniteStreams last time i also did not use flux so ever forward never learning
Sethalidos: stupid questyion but is it in Fareheit instead of Celcius
DrakoniteStreams: do you got flux for that wire?
Manae: @UWDJohn I guess that would be where my EE is too weak to intuitively grasp what's going on
Too_Many_Knives: @Sethalidos Canada is weird with its units, being so close to the US we use their units a lot.
fmerl: there's definitely a setting to swap it to C, btw
Bobtheninjagoldfish: just got back, is this the new soldering gun?
Bobtheninjagoldfish: or iron I guess
fmerl: fwiw I usually have mine set around 600
fmerl: and I only occasionally burn everything
RealGamerCow: Honest question, why pussyfoot around with lower temps?
fmerl: it's easiest to fry parts if you're on higher temps, basically
LordZarano: @Bobtheninjagoldfish Now I'm imagining a device like a gluegun but for solder
UWDJohn: yeah, your never going to be satisfied with the results at these lower temps IMHO
DrakoniteStreams: high temps are when you damage components, pcb, and the soldering iron tip itself
KeytarCat: Oh look, a mold of my teeth
Sethalidos: hey our system of measurement that is based on completely arbitrary things makes perfect sense LUL
Lord_ZYRK: Pretty straight chompers, KeytarCat
KeytarCat: I have problems :P
62MGcobra: maybe use a torch. if its good enough for a plumber its gotta be good for this kind of work. ;P
62MGcobra: :p
DrakoniteStreams: >_<
KeytarCat: Heavy orthodontia bills in my childhood
ContingentCat: @KeytarCat a mold done by a dentist or yourself?
Bobtheninjagoldfish: are you going to heatshrink any of this, Ian?
fmerl: I've soldered some wires with a plumber's torch in a real pinch. ... I can't recommend it, but, I mean... it is possible
KeytarCat: My actuall teeth have a flat line in the front because overbite as a kid
KeytarCat: Full-monty hall problem
Lord_ZYRK: I've soldered wires not directly with a torch, but a torch was involved https://eoceanic.com/images/tips/194/eoceanic_a_traditional_soldering_iron.jpg
ContingentCat: @KeytarCat huh, I had extensive dental work done as a kid too but they didn't give me the molds, I might have been better about my retainer if I could see the before state
DrakoniteStreams: I keep telling people those ts soldering irons are not that great...
johnny: I call this the Moiré shirt
johnny: Nice
fmerl: yeah I was concerned it might damage the Ian BrandTM to have the right tool for the job, but I figure if it's just one tool it's not too bad :)

Bobtheninjagoldfish: you are wrong.
johnny: Decided to watch your show as I make teriyaki sauce
fmerl: when the lines intertwine in a pattern serpentine, that's a moire
Capt_clown: Tiny Toons set the stage for Animaniacs

DrakoniteStreams: wait, is the mic side supposed to be grounded or NOT grounded?
Driosenth: I believe it is common gnd
Capt_clown: But the real question is do you have the higher ground?
RealGamerCow: I don't hear any difference between overhead and shotgun

Caffine1138: gonna laugh if it goes all THQ logo on us

Raiger: Not better or worse different but I thought it sounded slightly different
RomanGoro: Or roomier, I don't know exactly how to describe it
Arclight_Dynamo: It's unplugged and I hear Ian frigging with it.
Driosenth: can you snap your fingers into the mic?
Arclight_Dynamo: There's a hot mic in there, I think.
Bobtheninjagoldfish: I hate to break it to you Ian bu tI can hear you chainging the cable
Oohlgrist: I don't think we're getting the right audio source

Arclight_Dynamo: Ian there is a hot mic in the room.
Driosenth: I think we are hearing a different mic
Bobtheninjagoldfish: we are hearing you through another ic
Too_Many_Knives: There's gotta be something else
Boon_33: lol
Arclight_Dynamo: I don't think we're hearing the RODE at *all*.
RealGamerCow: we shouldn't have heard him plug stuff in.
ContingentCat: Too many mics, too many mics
zuchen_120: ooohhhh
Boon_33: I was wondering how we could hear the plugging

DrakoniteStreams: there is no AGC running is there?
UWDJohn: just compared a constant whistle with the amp and with out. Should give you a steady level to compare
ContingentCat: @Myles3190 adding a pre-amp to a mic
Driosenth: nothing
fmerl: don't examine the audiophiles too closely, they don't hold up to scrutiny

drdudeman: @Lord_ZYRK Never stripped a wire or wired anything before.
Too_Many_Knives: Ian needs to adjust the framing so we can see
Too_Many_Knives: ah there
Lord_ZYRK: drdudeman it's really nothing too big once you get your hands on it, trust me
Arclight_Dynamo: Soldering components to a board like this looks so satisfying.
drdudeman: @Lord_ZYRK It looks doable but Im just rather nervous.
drdudeman: A radio place quoted me $750 to do the install
drdudeman: So theres roughly a $200 difference between part cost/labor vs doing it myself
drdudeman: Its almost like we are making a little copper porcupine :)
sirspate: wick it wick it wick it wick it..
Too_Many_Knives: wick-a wick-a wick-a it's solder braid

Raiger: Are we...learning? I don't like where this is headed...
RandomTrivia: Learning is a strong word, and there's still time :D
RandomTrivia: We have every faith in you Ian.
fmerl: no need for heat shrink when you can just wrap everything in far too much electrical tape afterwards
TheMerricat: I say we just epoxy pot the whole thing when done ;)
Arclight_Dynamo: Nice.
RandomTrivia: clean
Raiger: Gotta get that IP rating with the potting compound!
sirspate: a circuit diagram encrypted with rot-s/d
fmerl: depending on your jfets s/d are actually interchangable
fmerl: but not these ones, I don't believe
RandomTrivia: ew
Too_Many_Knives: Hate getting braided wires through holes
sirspate: you could always label it..
sirspate: or does marker not adhere?
iris_of_ether: lrrHORN lrrHORN lrrHORN
Qvdv: I don't want that song stuck in my head either
malfunct subscribed at Tier 1. They've subscribed for 86 months!
malfunct: man, I really hate stripping cable like that
LRRbot: lrrSPOT Thanks for subscribing, malfunct! (Today's storm count: 70)
Jim02762: This is going into a project box? How are the cables going through the box?
sirspate: I'd be tempted to take a drill and widen the hole
malfunct: premade cables are the way to go if they exist for your project
malfunct: machines assemble them so much better than we humans do

iris_of_ether: You say that but that's not necessarily true for winding transformers :D
UWDJohn: could consider getting some PCB's fabbed via OSHPark? (Other manufactures are available) It's pretty short money.
malfunct: What if you aren't feeling particularly good at thinking or working right now? (its been a long day)
sirspate: I have a Dreamcast serial cable that's just a cut cable with a board in the middle wrapped in packing tape. Who needs a project box?
malfunct: you need a couple of extra hands to get that done
malfunct: just pot the circuit in a brick of resin and it will last you forever
corefluxx: Why not get a helping hands?
fmerl: @uwdjohn jlcpcb is incredibly inexpensive now, and you can even get SMT assembly cheap, so you could do tiny boards with SMT resistors and then just have to match jfets & add them and wire in xlr
malfunct: fmerl indeed, I wouldn't use proto board like this again, it takes more time but it is much easier to design a PCB and order it
DrakoniteStreams: everyone needs a set of the cheap helping hands
UWDJohn: @fmerl I've used jlcpb with good success myself. Though I haven't taken advantage of their assembly. But I can solder SMT stuff effectively.
fmerl: strong agree on vice vs. helping hands
TheMerricat: I don't have the link open anymore but the thread that I am posted where you got this diagram that's exactly what they were doing they were getting PCBs designed and shipped to them
TheMerricat: I am = Ian even
couldntpickausername: Ian I got a mini vice for circuit boards a little while ago, it's great
couldntpickausername: I'll tweet it at you
UWDJohn: Just did a leadless QFN (.5mm pitch) yesterday.
malfunct: I designed a PCB for a project I did last year and it was absolutely worth learning how to use Eagle and order them. I will never go back to protoboard if I have a choice
fmerl: you're braver than I am
fmerl: re: leadless QFN
couldntpickausername: and tweeted
UWDJohn: Ian, You could stream designing a PCB with KiCAD or something.
malfunct: I think the next evolution of that project will be integrating the USB chip and microcontroller onto the single PCB rather than doing it as an arduino shield.
UWDJohn: That would be in the spirit of the show I reckon.
sirspate: happy little solder clouds
Arclight_Dynamo: The real galaxy-brain content for TTSF is to design a cuircuit in Stud.io using Lego pieces. Kappa
malfunct: yeah, if you are using other people's designs and just ordering it built there isn't much to stream
UWDJohn: That's fair.
iris_of_ether: lrrHORN lrrHORN
UWDJohn: remember the Sources and grounds might ring as a short as it's only 68ohms
sirspate: solder bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down..
Bobtheninjagoldfish: SPeaking of LEGO, A while ago the maids that clean my house (I'm disabed so I pay a firm to help) broke one of my LEGO Kits, and I just got the replacement parts in so this weekend I get to get a beer and rebuild the Astin Martin DB5
fmerl: I'm always amazed that they managed to get an ejection seat that works as well as that one does into that kit @bobtheninjagoldfish
RandomTrivia: @Bobtheninjagoldfish That sounds like a "boo-ray" feeling
Bobtheninjagoldfish: @RandomTrivia eh, Accidents happen. and they are paying for the replacement parts so I'm not all that miffed. also I get to build a cool lego kit again.
Bobtheninjagoldfish: @fmerl Right? and The bulletproof sheild too
ContingentCat: the future is now!
zuchen_120: electron's like...hey, we've got donuts...
Arclight_Dynamo: "Electrons are very small."
NotCainNorAbel: @Bobtheninjagoldfish How is that kit? I really enjoyed the Bonsai kit recently. I felt like the dinosaur fossils had a lot of repeated elements.
DeM0nFiRe: No audio
corefluxx: nope
NotCainNorAbel: nothing
RandomTrivia: Nothing
62MGcobra: nope
Lord_ZYRK: Can't hear shit, captain
Arclight_Dynamo: No voice. Crackle.
person322: a whole lotta nothin
TheMerricat: oh dear
LordZarano: 🔇
SnackPak_: phantom power?
NotCainNorAbel: mic power?
RandomTrivia: But there was a faint crackle
Bobtheninjagoldfish: @NotCainNorAbel I really like it. but then again there are very few Lego kits I build that aren't enjoyable.
Bobtheninjagoldfish: also I'm a big James Bond fan so...
Bobtheninjagoldfish: the only really disappointing thing in the DB5 kit is the lack of a Bond Minifig
NotCainNorAbel: @Bobtheninjagoldfish I do like most kits as well. Maybe I'll pick it up then...no place to put it right now but maybe when I go back into my office.
NotCainNorAbel: I would think any minifig would be hard since which Bond do you pick?
Bobtheninjagoldfish: given that it is the car from Goldfinger, connery. Or Do like they do with the ghostbusters sets and give you all the Ghostbusters
NotCainNorAbel: fair fair
Bobtheninjagoldfish: speaking of which I also have the new ECTO-1 waiting too
tipulsar85: Is this a transistor or vactube preamp?
iris_of_ether: JFET transistor
fmerl: you do have a meter right there; could just test the battery :)
corefluxx: Ah Kirkland... always but batteries by the gross
Too_Many_Knives: How much would that weigh?
tipulsar85: Fresh AA battery, not from Bellevue.
Bobtheninjagoldfish: nothing
TheMerricat: crackle but nothing else
corefluxx: Got some noise.. but not voice
RandomTrivia: Fzzzt
DiscordianTokkan: mawp
UWDJohn: intermittent connection?
RandomTrivia: No signal but some fuzz
DiscordianTokkan: (Well, the speaker equivalent, I'm glad I'm not on headphones)
Arclight_Dynamo: That's a lot like what it sounded when you pulled the ground.
Arclight_Dynamo: *sounded like
NotCainNorAbel: sounds similar to when the ground was pulled
NotCainNorAbel: @Arclight_Dynamo lrrAWESOME
TheMerricat: so it's weird that it worked before we put it on the prep board
Arclight_Dynamo: @NotCainNorAbel Eeeey! :D
UWDJohn: shucks
CptFranisDrake: i wonder if theres a short
TheMerricat: phone auto correct sucks
iris_of_ether: Thank you for the stream :)
iris_of_ether: I'm sorry about your short and/or opens
tipulsar85: Rest well Ian.
RandomTrivia: We want it to work WELL
RandomTrivia: lrrBEEJ
NotCainNorAbel: It is working badly lrrBEEJ

DiscordianTokkan: Thanks for the stream!

malfunct: what iron are you using?
UWDJohn: hakko
corefluxx: Cheer100
RandomTrivia: We certainly "Let's Tried" today
malfunct: UWDJohn oh nice, I love hakko irons
62MGcobra: just wait
UWDJohn: happy to help!
Banrael: cheer300 I got here late, but vod time!
NotCainNorAbel: Pride500 - Fun time, reminded me of my electronics classes. good times, good times.
